Athletic Department Continuing a History of Excellence Calvert Hall participates in 17 sports with 39 different teams, the largest athletic department in Maryland among all-male schools. The school has some of the finest on-campus athletic facilities in the region. Competing in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (“MIAA”), Calvert Hall is the only school in the MIAA to participate in the “A” Conference in every sport. Dating back to the 1920’s, the Cardinals have won 190 varsity conference championships, while garnering both regional and national recognition. Performance Center & Weight Room The performance center and weight room housed in the Crispino Center features Hammer Strength weight racks, kettle bells, dumbbells, agility plyometric boxes and ample room for multiple agility ladder use. This modern and top-of-the-line facility rivals the performance and weight rooms of any MIAA school. All Calvert Hall teams have access to the facility for pre-season conditioning. Louis J. Eckerl III begins his 39th year as athletic director at Calvert Hall. In addition to his administrative duties at CHC, Lou Eckerl has taught, coached in the football program, was an assistant coach within the baseball program for 15 seasons, and has been head coach of the varsity baseball team since 2002. As the skipper of the Cardinals baseball squad, he has won eight MIAA Championships and has posted a record of 488-147. Lou graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School in 1970, and from there went on to become a four- year letter winner in football and baseball at Juniata College, where he’s been inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame. After Lou Eckerl college, Lou returned to Gibbons, where he coached baseball and Athletic Director later served as the Crusaders’ athletic director. Lou Eckerl is the 39th Season longest-serving athletic director in the MIAA. 5

ABOUT CHC GOLF Golf at Calvert Hall has a legacy of championship success dating back eight decades. Golf is one of the school’s most competitive and difficult teams to make, as the varsity roster typically carries only 10-12 players. These golfers are all capable of shooting scores in the 70’s for 18 holes, and historically the team’s top performers boast USGA handicaps of 3.0 or less. In addition to the on-course expectations placed on them, Calvert Hall golfers are also expected to maintain impeccable behavior and proper golfing etiquette during practices, matches and throughout their normal routine at school. “Those obligations aren’t taken lightly,” says head coach Drew Forrester. “Our players hear it time and time again: play your hardest, never give up, and above all, conduct yourself appropriately in every circumstance.” Since Coach Forrester assumed his role in 2013, Calvert Hall golf has remained a consistent contender in the MIAA’s “A” Conference. But he is quick to point out the reasons behind the program’s success. “We take our golf very seriously at Calvert Hall,” Forrester explains. “To that end, we are looking only for student-athletes who are truly dedicated to the sport and their golf game. If you think you ‘like’ golf, our program isn’t for you. But if you ‘love’ golf and want to improve and compete at the highest level you can, we’re likely going to be a great fit.” MIAA “A” CONFERENCE Calvert Hall is a proud member of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (“MIAA”), the premier high school athletic association in the state. The MIAA was formed in 1994 as the immediate successor to the old MSA league, which was founded in 1919. The MIAA is comprised of 29 members, religiously-affiliated schools and private educational institutions located within the Baltimore metro area. Based on an ideal of fair competition, the MIAA divides its teams into “A”, “B” or “C” conference for every sport, depending on the relative strength of the schools in that particular discipline. Calvert Hall golf, like the school’s other 16 sports, competes in the MIAA’s “A” Conference. The MIAA “A” is the state’s best and most competitive scholastic golf league. Every team in the conference has won a team championship at least once since 2008. The “A” Conference schedule includes a double round-robin format (home/away) in the regular season and an end-of-season match play tournament to determine the team champion. The MIAA’s team championship is traditionally hosted by Caves Valley Golf Club, rated as one of the top courses in the nation. The MIAA individual champion is crowned following a two-round stroke-play tournament. Calvert Hall is joined in the “A” Conference by the following schools: • Archbishop Spalding – Chartwell Golf and Country Club (Severna Park) • Gilman – Elkridge Club (Baltimore) • Loyola – Hunt Valley Golf Club (Phoenix) • McDonogh – Woodholme Country Club (Pikesville) • Mount Saint Joseph – Rolling Road Golf Club (Catonsville) • St. Paul’s – Baltimore Country Club (Timonium) 7
COACHING STAFF Calvert Hall’s head coach is Drew Forrester, a longtime fixture on the Baltimore amateur golfing scene. Forrester, currently a member at Eagle’s Nest Country Club, spent two years as head coach of the golf team at John Carroll (2011-12) before accepting the position at Calvert Hall prior to the 2013 season. As a player, Forrester’s resume is filled with titles and accomplishments. He won the Baltimore Publinx title in 2000 (spring), 2004 (fall) and 2009 (fall). He has made 13 appearances in the Maryland Open since 1997, was a three-time club champion at Mount Pleasant, a four-time club champion at Mountain Branch, and won the Baltimore Senior Amateur championship in 2018. In 2019, Forrester was an alternate at the U.S. Senior Amateur in Durham, NC. Participating in the Maryland Senior Amateur the last two years, Forrester tied for fourth and tied for third respectively. Calvert Hall’s third-year assistant coach is Brian Hubbard, a 1992 CHC graduate who played soccer and lacrosse for the Cardinals, before playing college lacrosse at Michigan State. Hubbard is a 3-handicap member of Eagle’s Nest Country Club. His son Jacob is a freshman at Calvert Hall and member of this year’s JV golf team. “Brian has been a wonderful asset to me and the program,” says Coach Forrester. “He loves the game, loves coaching and teaching, and has been a terrific influence during his time with the Calvert Hall golf program.” In his initial campaign with the Cardinals in 2013, Drew Forrester guided Calvert Hall to its first MIAA golf title since 1997. In his previous seven full seasons at the helm, Calvert Hall has made the “A” Conference playoffs five times, appeared in the finals twice, won the ’13 MIAA title, and has sent nine players on to play college golf, including two players from the powerhouse 2020 team -- Michael Crowley at Loyola University and Austin Steckler at St. Joseph’s University. In 2013, the Cardinals stormed through the playoffs, beating McDonogh in the quarterfinals, shocking Mount Saint Joseph in the semifinals, and then edging Gilman in the championship match at Caves Valley. In the semifinal win over Mount Saint Joseph, CHC ended the Gaels’ four-year, 19-match home winning streak at Rolling Road Golf Club. “That day at Rolling Road is probably the best golf I’ve ever seen a high school team play,” Forrester says. “We beat them 14-7 and every player on the team contributed points. Breaking their home winning streak was quite an accomplishment.” Three days later at Caves Valley, the Cardinals rallied late on the front six to take the lead, then held on with clutch putting to win the MIAA title. Three players from that 2013 squad went on to play college golf at Towson University: Jimmy Grem, Nick Smearman and Jake Hormes. “I inherited an amazing group that year,” Forrester recalls. “Everyone was all in, or ‘Hall In’ as we like to say at Calvert Hall. They competed hard against one another in practice, supported each other during the matches, and in the end, they really just wanted to win. That team willed themselves to the title.” The following season, 2014, Calvert Hall went 4-1-2 in the regular season, but the host Cardinals were eliminated in the semifinals by Mount Saint Joseph, who revenged the semifinal loss from the previous year. The 2015 edition of Calvert Hall golf returned to the playoffs once again, and gave eventual champion Archbishop Spalding a battle in the semifinals, but eventually fell short. Three players on that season’s roster would go on to play Division I collegiate golf: Doug Grem (Towson), Finn McGinnis (Fairfield) and Ryan Camille (Holy Cross). After missing the post-season in 2016, Calvert Hall 8
returned to the playoffs the next year, only to lose to Loyola in the semifinals. In 2018, an inexperienced Cardinals team with only one senior starter, narrowly missed making the playoffs, finishing 5-7 on the season. A young Calvert Hall team posted a 9-3 regular season record and earned the #1 seed in the conference playoffs in 2019. But after disposing of Archbishop Spalding in a closely contested semifinal match at home, the Cardinals fell in the finals to Loyola, 14-7. Despite losing to the archrival Dons in the championship, Forrester felt the 2019 campaign was an overwhelming success. “We did every single thing we set out to do at the beginning of the year except for one thing . . . winning the MIAA title. We were the #1 seed in the conference, we had the MIAA Individual Champion (Michael Crowley), we had two players make All-Conference (Crowley and Austin Steckler) and in the regular season we beat both St. Paul’s and Loyola for the first time in four years. And we got to Caves Valley. Everything on our list got checked off except for that last item.” Last spring, before the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the MIAA golf season, the Calvert Hall golfers and staff were enthusiastic and optimistic as the Cardinals were going to field the most experienced, most talented and coming off the championship loss, arguably the most highly motivated squad in the conference. Coach Forrester’s projected starting line-up included five seniors and the MIAA’s top sophomore (Lorenzo Sanz). The seniors unable to participate in their final season were: • Michael Crowley – MIAA Individual Champion 2019, All-MIAA 2019 • Austin Steckler – All-MIAA 2019, three Top 20 finishes in the MIAA individuals • Harrison Silva – All-MIAA 2018, four-year varsity member • Matt Cover – three-year varsity golfer, winner of team’s Coaches Distinction Award in 2019 • Alick Dalrymple – three-year varsity golfer ™ Go Hall! 2021 SEASON PREVIEW Twelve months after COVID-19 shut down the 2020 season, dashing the hopes of one Calvert Hall’s best varsity golf teams of the last several decades, the Cardinals take to the course in 2021 brimming with enthusiasm and anticipation, eager to start another era of golf. Calvert Hall returns five players from last year’s team that was the clear-cut favorite in the MIAA’s “A” Conference. Joining the five returning golfers are seven newcomers, including four freshmen, the highest number of 9th graders to make the varsity roster during Drew Forrester’s nine-year tenure as head coach. Forrester and his third year assistant, Brian Hubbard, see lots of opportunity for this edition of Calvert Hall golf. “We’re young, obviously, with just two seniors on our 12-man roster,” Forrester states. “This is one of those seasons where we don’t really know exactly who will get to play and how much. It’s going to be a matter of who plays the best golf and who can understand the match play format. Brian [Hubbard] and I both think the whole team is capable of competing and contributing throughout the season. It’s going to be an interesting campaign, for sure.” Seniors Grant Dalrymple (third year on varsity) and Jeff Martini (second year on varsity) have both impressed the coaching staff over the off-season. John Wright is one of seven talented newcomers for Calvert Hall’s varsity this spring. “You could see right away in early February when we gathered for practice that Jeff and Grant had really improved,” Forrester says. “Jeff’s pre-season scores were very impressive and Grant made a couple of nice changes to his set-up and posture that made his golf swing much more reliable. Those two definitely worked hard over the last 12 months.” Junior Lorenzo Sanz, a three-year varsity starter, set a Calvert Hall record for freshmen during the 2019 season, winning 34.5 points (out of a possible 42). A standout on the local and regional junior golf circuit, Sanz enters 2021 as one of the top prospects in the MIAA. “Everyone knows what Lorenzo is capable of,” Forrester says. “We thought he was the best kept secret in the area when he decided to attend Calvert Hall, but he’s no longer a secret. His golf speaks for itself. I’m excited to see him go up against the other top “A” Conference players this year. We’re expecting big things from him.” Jack Langford, a reserve on the 2020 varsity, returns for the Juniors Jack Langford and Haden Cheek were part of the 2020 team Cardinals this season with hopes of cracking the starting and they’ll be joined this season by classmates John Wright and line-up. Ryan Kaifer, newcomers to the Cardinals golf program. “All four of 10
these young men have a chance to earn playing time this season,” assistant coach Brian Hubbard remarks. “We’ve seen lots of good golf from Jack and Haden during their time with the varsity team. The door is open for both of them to step up and play key roles for us in 2021.” Wright and Kaifer were both impressive in off-season evaluations. “They both have a lot of quality,” Hubbard says. “Once they learn the format and the nuances of match play golf, there’s no telling what kind of contribution they might make. We’re excited to have both of them with us this season.” Sophomore Ben Dawes is a graduate of the school’s successful JV program and will make his varsity debut in 2021. “Ben is another young player who has vastly improved over the last 12 months,” Coach Forrester explains. “We see a lot of good things in his golf swing and his approach to the game. He’s hopefully going to be Lorenzo Sanz (left) and Grant Dalrymple (right), who will serve as team captains a fixture for us over the next three years.” in 2021, survey the approach shot in team match play competition. The varsity’s freshmen quartet are Peter Butarrazzi, Felix Endler, Caleb Itzoe and Sam Telljohann. Endler is a newcomer to competitive golf, having just started playing last year, while Butarrazzi, Itzoe and Telljohann are all products of the local summer junior circuit that plays throughout the Baltimore metro area. “Those four young men represent an outstanding nucleus for our program moving forward,” Forrester says, “but there’s a chance they will all contribute at some point right away in 2021. There’s playing time available to be had and I won’t be surprised in the least if we see lots of freshmen in the lineup this season.” The Cardinals begin play at home against Gilman on March 29 and play three matches in the first week of the season. Their toughest stretch comes on April 19-21 when they play three consecutive road matches over a three-day period. The top four teams in the seven-team MIAA “A” Conference make the playoffs. “Making the playoffs is always the first goal,” Forrester states. “You can’t win the championship at Caves Valley if you don’t finish in the top four. So that remains our biggest goal. But more than that, we really want to solidify Country Club of Maryland as a place where visiting teams don’t want to play. We need to assume full ownership of our home course, which is something we’ve done a pretty good job of since 2013.” Forrester has some team goals that don’t involve Caves Valley, though. “I’d like to see one of our players win the individual championship in late May,” the coach states. “And I’d like to see us have at least two All-Conference players, if not three. It would be great to accomplish those things in addition to making the playoffs and having a shot at returning to Caves Valley for the championship match.” 11
GOLFING FACILITIES Country Club of Maryland Calvert Hall golf is proud to call the Country Club of Maryland “home” since 1999. Situated just a ¼ mile from the CHC campus, Calvert Hall’s varsity practices and plays its MIAA matches at the classic golfing gem every spring. The 6,460- yard golf course opened in 1925 in the previously rural outskirts of Towson, and the layout through the rolling terrain and natural valleys remains relatively unchanged almost a century later. Golfing facilities at the Country Club of Maryland include a driving range, chipping green, practice bunker, putting greens, and full-scale pro shop. The Country Club of Maryland has hosted numerous state and sectional events in its history, including the Maryland Open, Maryland Senior Open, Maryland Amateur and other state and regional qualifying events. Head PGA Professional Mike Healy has been a longtime supporter of Calvert Hall golf and continues to serve as a friend to the program and its players. 12
Eagle’s Nest Country Club Overlooking the Loch Raven Watershed in Phoenix, MD, Eagle’s Nest (also known historically as “Towson Golf and Country Club”) offers a rustic and rural setting on a 6,719-yard championship course lined with dawn redwoods and sycamores. The course hosted a U.S. Open Qualifier for decades starting in the early 1990’s, and has been home to the Maryland Amateur and the MIAA Individual Championship. CHC golf utilizes Eagle’s Nest for practices throughout the year and the beautifully renovated clubhouse annually hosts the Captain’s Dinner. Hillendale Country Club Hillendale is the home of the JV Cardinals. Since its relocation from Parkville to the Dulaney Valley region in 1954, the “new” Hillendale has hosted the PGA Tour’s Tournament Players Series, the Middle Atlantic Section PGA Professional Championship, the Maryland State Golf Association’s Open Championship, the MSGA’s Amateur Championship, and the USGA U.S. Open Qualifier. Hillendale’s golf course, 6,844 yards for championship play, is known for its rolling hills and small, undulating, well-bunkered greens. Calvert Hall Golf Practice Facility In 2016, Calvert Hall golf unveiled an off-campus indoor practice space, located just two blocks north of campus. This facility allows the players the ability to practice year-round. With the inclement weather that is infamous in Baltimore in the winter and early spring, an indoor practice facility is vital to the development of a championship-level golf program. The room includes two large hitting bays, a launch monitor and additional golf-instructional software designed to provide team members with vital swing and statistical data. 13

HISTORY Calvert Hall golf boasts a tradition of excellence including several of the greatest dynasties in league history, legendary coaches, individual champions, and a record number of team titles. In 1926, Calvert Hall’s first golf team competed in the annual scholastic tournament sponsored by the Maryland State Golf Association. As many as 13 local high school teams and over 100 golfers would participate in this annual springtime event. Seeing the interest in the sport, the Maryland Scholastic Association (“MSA”) introduced golf as a sanctioned varsity sport in 1931. At the inaugural MSA Championship, held at the original Hillendale Country Club, the Cardinals finished in sixth place out of six teams. Beginning in 1945, the Cardinals established themselves as a links contender, when they finished in 3rd place at the MSA team championship and placed two golfers in the MSA’s individual match play quarterfinals. The following season, Calvert Hall captured both its first MSA team championship and produced its first winner of the league’s individual tournament. In a six-season span (1946-1951), CHC had a dominating run, winning four conference team titles and finishing as runner-up once. The Cardinals, who played their home matches at the now-closed Bonnie View Country Club in Mount Washington, had four individual titlists and three individual finalists during this dynasty. John Bruff ’47 won the MSA individual title as a sophomore at City in 1945. After transferring to Calvert Hall, he repeated as MSA champion in his junior year and was a semifinalist in the individual match play tournament senior year. Bill Baumgartner ’48 won consecutive MSA individual championships as a junior and senior. Walter Gaynor ’47 was an individual semifinalist as a sophomore in 1945, and finished as league runner-up to his CHC teammates the next two years. In the 1950’s the balance of power in the MSA shifted to the public schools (Poly, Forest Park, City), who captured nine titles in 11 years. In this era, the home of Calvert Hall golf was Clifton Park and later Forest Park, two of Baltimore’s classic municipal courses. Cardinals golf had a resurgence itself with consecutive second place team finishes in 1959 and 1960, with a trio that included Gene Johnston ’61, Bobby Worsham ’60 and John O’Donnell ’61. Worsham twice finished as the MSA runner-up and O’Donnell finished in the top six at the MSA’s individual finals all four years at The Hall. Calvert Hall remained in the top third of the MSA standings throughout the first half of the decade. Mount Pleasant became the new home course for the Cards when the school re-located from Downtown Baltimore to its current Towson campus in 1960. In 1965, Calvert Hall won its first golf championship in 15 years when the Cards finished the regular season with a 10-1 record in league play. The MSA had revised its determination of a team champion in the mid 50’s to be the team with the best regular season record in conference play. The Cardinals were successfully able to defend the MSA crown in 1966 when the team had a perfect 13-0 regular season match play record. Three-year letterman Rich Tilghman ’67 and Harry Young ’66, the first golfer in MSA history to be a three-time individual runner-up, were Calvert Hall’s stars. The CHC golf program had one of the most dominating runs in league history in 1969-1971 led by Brooks Bolte ’71, Steve Bozell ’71 and the Ball brothers. The Cardinals won three consecutive MSA titles and in these three seasons there were eight Calvert Hall golfers finished in the top 5 in the league’s individual stroke play tournament. Bolte finished his career with the Cardinals with the distinction of three consecutive second place finishes in the MSA’s individual championship. The Cardinals, captained by senior Tom Grem ’75, grabbed a share of the 1975 MSA team title as tri-champions with Mount St. Joe and Poly. The move to LaSalle Road in the early 1960’s allowed Calvert Hall to attract more students from the burgeoning suburbs, where golf was flourishing in the era of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. The vast majority of the team during this decade of success from 1965-1975 were student-athletes who had grown up in the Towson area and had learned to play golf in the junior program at the Country Club of Maryland. 21
The Cardinals continued to field strong teams and produce scores of talented golfers in the 1970’s and 80’s. However, it was rival Mount St. Joe which built a golf powerhouse in that era, winning 10 MSA team championships between 1973 and 1985. Immediately following the end of the Gaels run, CHC captured the “A” Conference title in 1986 knocking off Loyola in the championship match. Following losses in the MSA team finals in 1989 and 1990, and missing out on the championship match the next year, Calvert Hall was able to hoist the MSA team trophy in 1992. Four-year starter Serge Hogg ’92, who placed third in the MSA individual finals in three consecutive seasons, captained what was the beginning of yet another CHC golf dynasty: 1992 was the first title in another championship “three-peat” and it was the first of five titles in six seasons. Jason Snyder ’98, who completed his career at The Hall with two team titles, three top 10 finishes in the MIAA’s individual stroke play finals, including an individual conference championship, was the Baltimore area’s most decorated scholastic golfer of the late 90’s. Upon his graduation, Chris Baloga ’01 took the baton as the team leader for CHC golf. In a storied career for the Cardinals, Baloga (now the head coach of the Loyola Greyhounds men’s golf team) twice finished in second at the MIAA’s individual tournament and had a third place finish as a junior. This was an era of significant change for the Cardinals golf program. For six decades, the golf team was always coached by a Christian Brother on the faculty. Bernard Loraditch became the first lay coach of CHC golf in 1985 and the next year Jules deFries took over the program. In his tenure as Cardinals golf coach, deFries won six conference championships and coached two individual champions. The MSA, which had sponsored golf for 63 seasons, disbanded after the 1992-1993 school year when Baltimore City’s public schools voted to join the MPSSAA. The successor MIAA was immediately formed, and the new league brought about the creation of an annual all-conference team and the eventual establishment of Caves Valley as the permanent home of the team championship match. After nearly four decades at Mount Pleasant, the Cardinals took flight and began playing their home matches at the Country Club of Maryland in 1999. Calvert Hall has remained a prominent force in scholastic golf throughout the 21st century. Since 2000, the Cardinals have made the MIAA semifinals 13 times, made four appearances in the finals, won the conference title once, produced two MIAA individual champions and had dozens of golfers earn all-conference recognition. Upon the retirement of long-serving coach Bernie McGinn, Drew Forrester became the Cardinals head coach in 2013 and he begins his ninth season at the helm of the program this spring. As the game of golf has changed and scholastic golf has evolved over nearly a century of play, a focus on the key tenets of hard work, sportsmanship, faith, and brotherhood have remained a constant focus of the Cardinals program. Michael Crowley, 2019 MIAA Individual Championship, is the most recent Cardinals golfer to capture the league’s title Calvert Hall has won 17 conference titles within the MSA and its successor league the MIAA, more than any other rival. 1946 1965 1970 1986 1994 1947 1966 1971 1992 1996 1948 1969 1975 1993 1997 1950 2013 There are nine Calvert Hall golfers who have captured the conference individual championship. 1946 - John Bruff 1950 - Lou Schilling 1997 - Jason Snyder 1947 - Bill Baumgartner 1971 - Mike Ball 2009 - Jason Burton 1948 - Bill Baumgartner 1989 - Tim Osgood 2019 - Michael Crowley 22
HISTORY - ANNIVERSARIES 75th Anniversary -- 1946 MSA Champions The nucleus of a strong 1945 Calvert Hall squad returned in ‘46. But, they added a key addition in John Bruff, a transfer from City who was the defending MSA individual champion. The Hall opened the regular season with a blowout victory over the three-time defending champions from City and never looked back. On a cool, rainy and windy day at Bonnie View Country Club, the Cardinals romped to an 11-stroke win over Poly in the MSA’s stroke-play team finals. This was the first of the CHC golf program’s record 17 team championships. Five Cardinals qualified for the MSA’s 16- man individual match play tournament and four advanced to the semifinals: sophomore Bill Baumgartner and juniors John Bruff, Walter Gaynor and Charles Herling. Bruff successfully defended his MSA individual championship, knocking off his teammate Gaynor 3&2 in the finals. In the 89 years of MSA/ MIAA golf competition, 1946 is the only time a single team has produced the top four finishers at the league’s individual championship. 50th Anniversary -- 1971 MSA Champions The Cardinals returned six of their top seven golfers from the prior season’s undefeated MSA championship. With an incredibly talented and experienced roster, Calvert Hall’s coaching staff decided to again enter the prestigious Lindy Invitational scholastic tournament, held annually at the Rock Hill Golf & Country Club on Long Island. A young Cardinals team competed there in 1970, but performed below expectations. In 1971, the Cards surprised the competition by winning the Lindy Invitational by 13 strokes, defeating some of the best teams from New England, New York and Pennsylvania. Returning to conference play, the Cardinals stormed their way through the regular season and clinched the MSA championship “three-peat” in fitting fashion, by crushing Loyola in the regular season finale. The MSA individual tournament was dominated by the Cardinals, as sophomore Mike Ball shot a two-day total of 150 over the Mount Pleasant course, finishing ahead of seniors Brooks Bolte in second and Steve Bozell in third. The champion’s older brother, Eddie Ball, was fifth place in the MSA’s. The Cardinals starting line-up also included seniors and three-year The starting six for the 1971 MSA Champions (left-to-right): varsity lettermen David Gutierrez and Jeffrey Fick. David Gutierrez, Steve Bozell, Eddie Ball, Jeffrey Fick, Brooks Bolte, and Mike Ball 25th Anniversary -- 1996 MIAA Champions In the MIAA semifinals, the Cardinals knocked off an up-and-coming Boys’ Latin 10-8 to advance to the program’s sixth finals appearance in eight seasons. Arriving to Caves Valley for the championship match, the odds were stacked against Calvert Hall, as they faced the task of defeating Gilman, the MIAA’s defending champions, whose top two golfers in ‘96 were the league’s individual champion and the fourth place finisher. The Cardinals were led by junior Alan Phillips, who was the lone starter remaining from CHC’s 1994 championship team. The Hall got big performances from seniors Benjamin Tebbs and David Livermore, as well as sophomores Jason Snyder and Lance Bajkowski for an 11-7 upset victory over the Greyhounds. In his 11th season, this was the fifth “A” Conference championship for head coach Jules deFries. A week prior to the team finals, Jason Snyder finished ninth at the MIAA individual tournament at Pine Ridge, one of five Cardinals to place in the top 20. 23
