February It’s is American Heart Month. The month of February is dedicated to motivating us all to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent heart disease. One of the best ways to reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke is checking your blood pressure at home regularly. To make sure your numbers are accurate, follow the steps below: Take at least 2 readings that are 1 minute apart in the morning, before taking any medications, and again in the evening before dinner. Don’t smoke, exercise, or drink caffeinated beverages or alcohol within 30 minutes of taking your blood pressure. Check the cuff size and fit of your blood presure monitor. Place the bottom of the cuff above the bend of your elbow. Rest in a chair for at least 5 minutes with your left arm resting comfortably on a flat surface at heart level. Sit calmly, don’t talk, and make sure you’re relaxed. Keep your feet flat on the floor with your back straight and supported. Write down your results so you can share with your doctor later. What will you do this month to improve your heart health? Get to or maintain a healthy weight Start managing my stress better Walk the dog, garden, or do something physical Stop smoking or limit alcohol Check my blood pressure regularly Other ideas: Member Services: 1-800-633-1542 (toll-free) | TTY users: 711

April National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Twice a year, in April and October, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sponsors the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This program provides a safe, easy, and anonymous way for people to dispose of prescription drugs. Pharmacies, fire stations, and police stations set up secure drop-off locations where you can safely dispose of the medications you no longer need. Prescription medications that are left unused could end up lost, stolen, or misused. Make sure you store your medications in a safe place, out of reach from visitors to your home, and dispose of old medications properly. How will you remember to take your medications every day? Visit takebackday.dea.gov to learn more. Take medication at the same time every day when I do another daily routine Use a pillbox with the days of the week Leave myself notes on the refrigerator or bathroom mirror Set an alarm on my phone Turn my bottle upside down after taking medicine, then turn it over at the end of the day as a reminder to start over tomorrow Other ideas: Member Services: 1-800-633-1542 (toll-free) | TTY users: 711

June It’s Men’s Health Month! The month of June is dedicated to raising awareness of preventable health problems and encouraging early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men in the United States, on average, die 5 years earlier than women and die at higher rates from the three leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries. Many health conditions can be treated when medical advice is sought early. If you’re a man, listen to your body and be sure to get regular checkups. Not only will you live longer, but you’ll also have a better quality of life. If you’re a woman, encourage the men in your life to start taking control of their health.
