INTRODUCTION

We are thrilled to present our new partnerships to race in 2020 which you will see from this
booklet follow our tried and tested formula. We have purchased five yearlings, four colts and one
filly from the major sales in the UK and Ireland. KVT is in the enviable position of having our
horses trained in some of the top yards in the country and we welcome Ed Walker to our roster
for 2020. Ed has been based at the historic Kingsdown Stables in Upper Lambourn since 2016 and
has sent out over 300 domestic winners. Kingsdown was responsible for the winner of the 1974
Derby with Snow Knight.

We have had a fantastic season with our three-year-old boys. Persian Moon competed in many a
race and ran at most of the major festival meetings. Although he narrowly missed getting his head
in front, he was a memorable fourth at Royal Ascot and has now been sold for a considerable profit
to race overseas. Flashcard was another stand-out this season winning a valuable handicap at Ascot
before being placed in Group 3 company. He too will continue his racing career abroad having been
privately sold for around 10 times his original purchase price. These two were rated in the 100’s and
not far behind has been the shrewdly purchased Sir Busker, who has now won three times, is rated
in the 90’s and will be a KVT flag bearer for next season. Scheduled to come back next season is
our star sprinter Magical Memory who has been off-games for a year or so, but is currently in good
shape and should return to Charlie Hills in the New Year.

Our two-year-old’s have not really got fully rolling this year for various reasons, although Dance Fever
has won two from two and looks an exciting colt for next year. He had some niggles in the Spring
but has flourished since heading to Clive Cox after some excellent work from Hetta Stevens. Both
Kashmirella and Spanish Kiss made promising debuts and both look to have a good year ahead of
them as they grow into their frames. Streak Lightning was showing up well at Mark Johnston’s before
he was sidelined with an injury, but we look forward to his progress next season, especially as his sire
has had a fantastic start to his stud career. Flashcard’s not-so-little sister Castleinthesand will need a
little more time but both her half-brother and sire have had great years and we remain highly excited
about her future.

We have all been treated to some excellent stable visits this year and, as always, we thank our trainers,
their wives and teams for looking after us all so well. 2020 will follow a similar programe and we will
be sending round the dates early in the New Year.

This is now our 7th crop of yearlings since we took over the KVT reins from Nick Robinson, when
Magical Memory was shown to some of you, and although yearling prices have risen over this
period we have managed to purchase all these new babies for around our target price of £50,000.
Therefore a special mention for the efforts of our bloodstock agent Luke Lillingston who has, along
with our trainers and team, unearthed what we believe to be a fine group of youngsters.

As ever shares will be sold on a first come first served basis and we wish you the very best of luck
with your new purchase.

THE ANDREW BALDING SYNDICATE
Holy Roman Emperor / Izola colt
This colt is by the top class two-year-old Holy Roman Emperor, who famously
retired to stud prematurely upon the announcement of George Washington’s
infertility. He has proven a high class stallion ever since with many top class sons/
daughters flying his flag all over the world. These include this year’s Prix Jacques Le
Marois (Group 1) winner, Romanised, and of course KVT’s own Charles The Great
who won the Weatherbys Super Sprint before being sold to race on in Hong Kong
where he made up into a high class and consistent sprinter.
The dam, Izola, is by the well-bred Beat Hollow and was rated 95 herself on the flat in her native France
when trained by Freddy Head. She is a half-sister to the Listed winner Brick By Brick and their dam, Pivka,
is a daughter of the Nell Gwyn (Group 3) winner Ghariba, herself a great broodmare.
We bought this colt for €38,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale which makes him eligible
for the €300,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Race. Andrew Balding will train him which is very
appropriate given he also trained Charles The Great for KVT. Both Andrew’s mother, Emma, and assistant,
Tessa Hetherington, were great admirers of this colt at the sale.
Luke Lillingston commented: “One of Nick Robinson’s best and most profitable buys was Charles The Great
by the perennially successful sire Holy Roman Emperor. The last time we teamed up with Emma Balding was
for Flashcard at this sale. Flash’s dam is by the outstanding broodmare sire Pivotal, sire of this colt’s second
dam. This colt’s first dam is by Khalid Abdullah’s beautifully bred Beat Hollow, by Sadler’s Wells. Charles The
Great was out of a mare by Barathea, also a son of the Sadler’s Wells. In other words we have tried hard to
line up the stars again and with this beautiful colt I believe we may well have done so. I have every hope that
he will be the next KVT star at Kingsclere.”

THE CHARLES HILLS SYNDICATE
Equiano / Penny Drops colt
This strong colt is by the dual Group 1 winning sprinter Equiano. Equiano has
made up into a useful stallion since through the likes of multiple Group 1 winner,
The Tin Man, as well as Strath Burn and Equilateral both of which were trained by
Charlie. It is indeed a sire line in which Faringdon Place has become hugely adept
- not least via Equiano’s paternal half–brother, Dark Angel (by Acclamation), who
won at Group 1 level for Barry Hills before establishing himself as one of the best
sires in the current era.
The dam, Penny Drops, was a high class mare herself, gaining black type on numerous occasions for
William Haggas. Her first foal, a two-year-old named Badri (a son of Dark Angel), is in training with
Charlie Hills and is well-regarded. Penny Drops is a daughter of another black type mare in Penny Cross,
herself a half-sister to the Celebration Mile (Group 2) winner, Priors lodge.
We bought this colt for £50,000 at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale which makes him eligible for the
£250,000 Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes. He is also eligible for the Plus10 Bonus. Charlie Hills loved
this colt at ‘Donny’ and will train him which is exciting given his family connection to the pedigree.
Luke Lillingston commented: “The Aga Khan was once asked what were the three most important attributes
in a racehorse. He famously replied “Speed, speed and more speed!” This colt’s sire Equiano was Barry Hills’s
last great sprinter, memorably winning two King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. His propensity to impart speed
in his offspring has produced the likes of The Tin Man and Strath Burn. This colt’s dam is by champion sire
Invincible Spirit and she earned black type on no fewer than six separate occasions as a two and three-year-
old. In turn her dam gained her black type at Ascot. This colt allows us to dream of another Hills speedball
in the KVT colours!”

THE MARK JOHNSTON SYNDICATE
New Approach / Welsh Angel filly
This filly is by the Champion Racehorse of Europe New Approach, a son of the
awesome Galileo, who won five Group 1 races for Jim Bolger. Going to stud with
significant expectation he has not disappointed, siring numerous classic winners
such as Dawn Approach, Talent and Masar. The latter emulated New Approach
himself when taking last year’s Epsom Derby.
The dam, Welsh Angel, is a daughter of the great broodmare sire Dubai Destination who
hails from the wonderful family of the top class middle distance fillies Cerulean Sky and Moonstone. At stud, she
looks a highly promising broodmare, siring three horses rated 95 or more from four runners. Two of these, Scarlet
Dragon and Commander Cole, are rated over 105 with the former a redoubtable character under both codes for
Eve Johnson-Houghton and now Alan King. Both of these could boost the pedigree further over the coming
seasons whilst the dam’s current two-year-old (an unnamed colt by Helmet – who we liked at the sales last year
interestingly) is well regarded and expected to make his debut shortly for Paddy Twomey in Ireland.
We bought this filly for 60,000gns at the Tattersalls Book 1 Yearling Sale which makes her eligible for the
£25,000 Book 1 Bonus should she win a Class 4 or above Novice/Maiden race as a two-year-old, something
Mark Johnston helped us to achieve with Persian Moon last year. Mark was enthusiastic about this filly at
the sales and she fitted into his high ratings criteria when it comes to purchase.
Luke Lillingston commented: “What a beautiful beast of a filly this is. It did not come as a surprise when
Piers Winkworth reported her impressive post auction weight of 448 kilos, yet she is feminine whilst possessing
a very strong action. I am familiar with this family as it was beautifully nurtured at Kilfrush Stud, close to my
home in Co Limerick. Hardly a year goes by without yet another high class racehorse emanating from it and
I am more than hopeful that this lady will be another.”

THE WILLIAM KNIGHT SYNDICATE
Belardo / Teide Lady colt
This attractive colt hails from the first crop of the Champion two-year-old and
Dewhurst (Group 1) winner Belardo, who went on to win the Lockinge (Group 1)
aged four. Belardo is very much bred to be a top class stallion. A son of the leading
sire Lope De Vega, he actually achieved a higher Timeform rating on the track than
his own sire. His dam, Danaskaya, was herself very fast and precocious, and earned
the accolade of being crowned Champion two-year-old filly in Ireland.
The dam, Teide Lady, is a winning daughter of the Sheikh Hamdan’s outstanding Derby winner Nashwan
who has already produced the Group 3 winning two-year-old Ayaar at stud to date. She, herself, is a half-
sister to the Superlative Stakes (Group 2) winner Hatta Fort as well as a very recent Group 3 winner in the
shape of Brian Meehan’s Spirit Of Appin.
We bought this colt for 50,000gns at the Tattersalls Book 1 Yearling Sale which makes him eligible for the
£25,000 Book 1 Bonus should he win a Class 4 or above Novice/Maiden race as a two-year-old, something
our own Persian Moon accomplished last year. William Knight loved him at the sales and will train him
from his idyllic Angmering Park base in Sussex.
Luke Lillingston commented: “First impressions are usually the best. This colt had hardly come out of his box and
stood up when I took an immediate shine to him. He has a beautiful head and a really classy eye. His body and
athletic movement then meant he was firmly on our wish list, coinciding with William Knight’s enthusiasm for him.
His sire had outstanding acceleration evidenced in his brilliant Dewhurst and Lockinge wins. His female family is
one of Anthony Oppenheimer’s best and I was lucky enough to buy the high class Miss Keller, this colts third dam.
Interestingly one of our frequent protagonists in the sales ring Anthony Bromley, for whom I have maximum
respect, felt we had bought great value and regretted not bidding for this colt. Thank goodness he didn’t!”

THE ED WALKER SYNDICATE
Dutch Art / Pink Flames colt
This colt is by the Prix Morny and Middle Park (both Group 1’s) winner Dutch Art,
a son of the top class miler Medicean who has made up into a fine stallion. At stud
to date, he has sired the likes of Group 1 winning sprinters Slade Power, Garswood
and most recently Mabs Cross amongst many other top class performers.
The dam, Pink Flames, an own-sister to the E P Taylor Stakes (Grade 1) winner
Lahaleeb, has produced two winners at stud to date including a Listed winner in
Spain, Flanders Flame, as well as the 90-rated Scorching Heat. This is the family of the top class Cheveley
Park Stud pair, Virtual and Iceman.
We bought this colt for 42,000gns at the Tattersalls Book 3 Yearling Sale which makes him eligible for the
£150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes. He is also eligible for the Plus10 Bonus. Ed Walker was very
enthusiastic about him at the sales and will train him from Bjorn Nielsen’s impressive Kingsdown Stables
in Lambourn.
Luke Lillingston commented: “I remember Dutch Art all too well to my cost when he beat a yearling I
had bought named Hoh Mike in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot. Not only did Dutch Art go on to win the
Group 1 Prix Morny in his next start, he became a highly accomplished stallion at Cheveley Park Stud in
Newmarket. Latterly his fertility has waned and there aren’t very many of them to buy, so it was very pleasing
to attain a full brother to one of his stakes winners. As a May foal he has plenty of scope to fill into an
impressive frame and we can expect to see a really fine horse next Spring. With his dam being a full sister to a
Classic placed Group 1 winner, both sides of his pedigree offer plenty of potential. ”
