News and Events 1960 and Earlier Leavers 1934 Leaver Betty (Ellis) Ahern boarded at Perth College from 1929 to 1934, and celebrated her 100th birthday in 2017. Betty was featured in the Sunday Times liftout STM on Sunday 4 March to celebrate International Women’s Day. For the full article visit our Facebook page. Three Old Girls – Catherine Minchin (1949), Beryl ‘Chookie’ (Fowler) Haneman (1941, Head Prefect and Lawley House Captain) and Marion (Fyfe) Wood (1939) – visited the Year 3 class in Term Four 2017. Catherine, ‘Chookie’ and Marion told the Betty Ahern (1934) featured in the STM magazine students all about their lives at the School, the mischief they had, the close relationships they shared with fellow boarders and day girls, the school rules and their fond memories of the Sisters. They showed the Year 3 girls where the boarding dormitories, sitting room and Junior School once stood. They delighted in telling the girls about the swimming pool having no filter but plenty of frogs, and how the Sisters would be in attendance to ensure they were safe. These three inspirational women had enriched the Year 3 students’ understanding of Perth College, its growth and community, well beyond the scope of a text book. Year 3 visit Class Gifts We know you reflect on your time at school fondly, and how fortunate we were to receive the gift of an education at Perth College. There were so many opportunities and your schooling prepared you for life beyond the PC gates. Today you have the opportunity to give the gift of education to another girl through a new initiative in 2018 run by the Perth College Foundation called Class Gifts. Class Gifts are donations from members of a year group (or groups) towards a new alumni-funded scholarship. We are stronger together than as individuals, and Class Gifts allow Old Girls of all ages to work together towards the same goal. We encourage you to consider making a voluntary donation (no matter how large or small). Contact Natalie Swannell, Director of Development, on 9471 2124, or via email foundation@pc.wa.edu.au. Page 6
