Rally Sweden February 13 - 16, 2020 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Welcome to Sweden and round two of the 2020 FIA World Rally Championship, which we began in fine style with a superb victory on Rallye Monte-Carlo thanks to Thierry and Nicolas. It meant a lot to me personally to win this event as, alongside Sanremo, Monte-Carlo was one of the rallies that first attracted me to the sport. So, to see Thierry and Nicolas on the top step of the podium for Hyundai was a special moment. The Hyundai Motorsport team has grown a lot in the past 12 months. I remember after finishing second in Monte-Carlo last year listing all the things that we needed to work on and the areas where we needed to improve. My people have done a great job filling in those gaps and showing what they are capable of. However, things do not always go according to plan and, of course, we hope that Ott and Martin will have a much better event here in Sweden following their accident in Monte-Carlo. Having celebrated our victory in round one, we move on to the challenge of Rally Sweden, which provides another wintry test. We appreciate the concerted efforts of the organisers and the FIA to make Rally Sweden happen. The conditions are uncharacteristically warm for this time of the year and we acknowledge the challenges that have been faced in preparing for the rally, with safety at the forefront of the decision-making process. Hyundai Motorsport has taken the decision to add Craig Breen to our line-up alongside Thierry and Ott in a bid to field the most competitive package possible for the event with the best available options for road position. We brought in Craig based on his performance in Sweden in 2018 when he finished second, and the potential he showed in our i20 Coupe WRC last season. In WRC 2, Ole Christian and Jonas will no doubt be looking to defend their class victory in Sweden last year, while Nikolay and Yaroslav can be feeling positive following their third-place finish in the category in Monte-Carlo. Our Manufacturers’ championship title defence might have begun well with the team leading after round one, but there is still a long way to go and we are ready for the fight. Andrea Adamo Team Director, Hyundai Motorsport
Rally Sweden February 13 - 16, 2020 ON STAGE WITH... CRAIG BREEN You finished second on Rally Sweden in 2018, so what do you hope to achieve for Hyundai Motorsport this year? “Obviously, I have good memories from Sweden. The last time I was there I had a really positive result, my best in the WRC so far, so it’s a rally that suits me well. When you get the right conditions with proper CRAIG BREEN snow it’s one of the nicest rallies.” TEAM POSITION: Driver This is your first time in the Hyundai i20 Coupe AGE: 30 WRC in Sweden, so how will you prepare for WRC STARTS: 61 the event? “It’s the first time driving the car on snow, but each @Craig_Breen time I get in it I’m discovering new things. I’m really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of /CraigBreenOfficial the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. It’s been a long time since Rally GB last October. I’m excited and anxious to drive the car again.” Can you describe the sensation of driving in Sweden (studded tyres, ice- coated roads, snow banks etc)? “Sweden is really special, the feeling and sensations you get in the car is like nowhere else. If you have proper snow banks it’s like a toboggan run, you’re just using the banks to keep the car straight and trying to carry as much speed as possible. Again, if you have the correct ice and temperature the grip is even better than on gravel sometimes. I get a big adrenalin rush from driving on roads like that.” How much do you enjoy driving in Sweden? “I really enjoy driving in Sweden, it’s one of my favourite events. When I started rallying years ago I was practising a bit on frozen lakes and at some schools in Scandinavia, so it’s definitely a surface I feel comfortable with.” What were the main lessons you learned driving the Hyundai in 2019? “The main things I learned were that I can be patient and trust the car. From the first moment I drove the i20 Coupe WRC I felt a lot of confidence and that I could drive my own natural way in the car, so I got back a lot of the enjoyment that I’d missed in previous years.” What’s your view on Ott Tänak joining Hyundai Motorsport for 2020? What do you think of his ability? “I’m still learning and to get the chance to work with guys like Ott and Martin is really nice, and I will try to take as much information and help as they can give me. Working with someone with so much experience from different teams can only help. From a Manufacturers’ championship point of view, it’s an extremely strong team with everybody there.”

Inclusion in the Pirelli Star Driver scheme for 2010 gave him his first major opportunity at world level and he completed the following season in a factory-supported World Rally Car, the catalyst to what would eventually become a full-time career in rallying’s top flight. Rally Sweden February 13 - 16, 2020 INTRODUCING WRC 2 Hyundai Motorsport’s commitment to the FIA World Rally Championship has increased for 2020 with a two-car entry in the WRC 2 support category, starting from Rallye Monte-Carlo. Estonian-based RedGrey Team will run the operation, with both drivers entered under the Hyundai Motorsport N banner. Jonas Andersson, from Sweden, and Russian Yaroslav Fedorov, will co- drive Veiby and Gryazin respectively. In Gryazin and Veiby, Hyundai Motorsport can count on two talented young drivers with huge potential for the future. They are both champions at regional level and proven winners in WRC 2 having taken a class win in Finland (Gryazin) and Sweden (Veiby). Conforming to the FIA’s Rally2 regulations, the i20 R5 ’20 comes with new dampers in both tarmac and gravel configuration, as well as a more powerful 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, now putting out a reported 290bhp. The changes mark the largest single upgrade to the car since it was revealed at the end of 2016. Rally Sweden February 13 - 16, 2020 ON THIS EVENT LAST YEAR… Thierry Neuville finished third on a hotly-contested Rally Sweden to score Hyundai Motorsport’s second consecutive podium result of the 2019 World Rally Championship. Neuville and co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul mounted a strong campaign through the rally, having been seventh at the end of Friday’s stages. The Belgian duo ended the 19-stage event just three seconds from second- placed Esapekka Lappi after a determined performance, with Ott Tänak winning for Toyota. Norwegians Andreas Mikkelsen and Anders Jæger-Amland were also in the podium hunt and finished in fourth overall, fending off M-Sport’s Elfyn Evans. Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena took seventh behind Toyota’s Kris Meeke to ensure all three Hyundais completed the 316km of special stages reliably. “We are pleased to be on the podium again; we couldn’t have done any more,” said Neuville. “It was a big battle in these tricky conditions and we were on the edge for a lot of it. When you are pushing so hard it is easy to make mistakes, so we have to be content with our third place – as well as taking four extra points in the Power Stage.” Fourth place was Mikkelsen’s best result since Mexico the previous year, with the Norwegian crew showing their pace and potential in a close fight for second through much of the event. Loeb meanwhile was competing in his first Rally Sweden since 2013, with the nine-time champion turning in a typically consistent and professional performance. “We have set some good times during the event and we have been able to learn a lot more about the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC, which is very useful for the future,” he concluded. Rally Sweden February 13 - 16, 2020 SWEDEN MEANS ● The only World Rally Championship event to be held in pure snow conditions, Rally Sweden was a founding round of the World Championship in 1973. But the event has been run since 1950 when it was held during the summer and called the Rally to the Midnight Sun. ● Now with a winter slot and some stages run in neighbouring Norway, Rally Sweden provides a high-speed test for drivers through frozen forests. To maximise grip and traction, they must master the art of leaning their studded tyre-shod cars on the snowbanks lining the tests. Not enough snow can lead to studs being ripped from the tyres and inadequate grip levels, while a lack of wintry conditions has previously forced organisers to cancel the event. ● For 2020, rally organisers have been forced to run a revised schedule due to uncharacteristically warm weather affecting the stages. Following shakedown, the rally starts on Thursday evening as originally planned with the traditional Super Special Stage opener in Karlstad, shown live on TV. On Friday, the action crosses into Norway with single runs through Hof-Finnskog and Finnskogen before a return to Swedish soil where the new Nyckelvattnet test precedes the Torsby sprint stage. ● On Saturday, the crews are back in Norway with the rally now following the same format as on Friday, while the popular Likenäs test is repeated twice on Sunday with the final run through counting as the points- paying Power Stage. ● Hyundai Motorsport’s Thierry Neuville and Sébastien Loeb are among the few non-Nordic drivers to have won in Sweden, in 2018 and 2004 respectively, while rallying legend Stig Blomqvist has racked up the most Swedish victories with seven.
