Welcome to NorthTec Social Services Department Kia ora and welcome to the Bachelor of Applied Social Work. Together we are entering into a partnership that will lead you to a qualification in social work. Society generally, and Te Tai Tokerau specifically, urgently needs professionally trained social service workers. The programme aims to produce practitioners who recognise the importance of social service which empowers individuals, families and communities to make positive changes and reach their full potential. Graduates need to be competent and skilled to work alongside whānau, hapū and iwi. The philosophy underpinning the programme is based on a central commitment to the empowerment of individuals, groups and communities. It prioritises the importance of bringing about social change and social justice within society. NorthTec believes that this degree responds to the specific and current demands of social services within Te Tai Tokerau as well as meeting national requirements. It will produce practitioners able to respond to constant change. They are also equipped to effectively communicate and work within cross-cultural and intercultural situations. In this programme you will study in small groups with qualified experienced teachers. You will practice your developing social work skills and make friends for life. The social work programme’s contribution to the economic and social capital of Northland is already evident in the work of its graduates, whose practice is creating a significant and positive difference throughout Te Tai Tokerau. This degree will continue that work of equipping and empowering people who can make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities in Northland.
