BREEDER, INDUSTRY 2020/21 National Hunt Yearbook PROFESSIONAL OR WELCOME from the TBA NH Committee Chairman To say that this year has been challenging for racing’s participants at all levels ENTHUSIAST, TBA would be an understatement. It is greatly to the credit of the TBA that the 2020 breeding season went ahead at all, albeit under strict protocols, while many MEMBERSHIP OFFERS people deserve credit that racing continues, even with strict controls. We are delighted to present to you the TBA NH Yearbook for the 2020-21 MANY BENEFITS. season, which showcases what the TBA does for the National Hunt industry. Just like everyone else, the TBA NH Committee’s activities were impacted upon and reduced by the pandemic. Its flagship event, the NH Breeders’ Awards Evening in August went virtual under the skilful guidance of Nick Luck, and the evening celebrated and rewarded British breeders for their success over the course of the 2019-20 season. Updated details of the 2021 TBA/HBLB Elite NH Mares’ Incentive Scheme can be found within this publication. This provides an incentive to the owners of the best jump mares to use British-based stallions. I urge all mare owners to utilise the scheme – registrations need to be made to the TBA office by 31 January 2020. Earlier in the year, the Great British Bonus (GBB) Scheme launched. This is certain to be a great benefit for the entire industry – when a bonus is won, the benefits extend from the breeder right through to stable staff. Another exciting development this season is the first running of the Grade 1 mares’ only chase at the Cheltenham Festival. This has long been an ambition and has only come about thanks to the determination of key people whose success in getting this race is much appreciated. GBB discounts Third party public liability policy* We are grateful to the stallion masters who kindly donated nominations at the time of the National Hunt stallion parade at Goffs in January to the TBA Silent Auction, which raises funds for TBA Business guidance & support National Hunt initiatives, and to all of our event supporters over the past year, including Goffs UK Exclusive events & training courses and Weatherbys. And certainly, I heard of one or two cases, where the support and advice from the TBA made the difference as to whether they bred their mares at all. 2020/21 National Hunt Yearbook 2020/21 National Hunt Yearbook Robert Waley-Cohen THE LIBERTHINE MARES’ CHASE During my decade as Chairman of the TBA National Hunt Committee the promotion of breeding National Hunt horses in Great Britain has focussed on three areas. These are firstly the Elite Mares’ Scheme under which the Levy Board provides financial assistance to the owners of the best mares to go to British based stallions. The second is the Great British Bonus (GBB) scheme, new in 2020, which provides up to £20,000 for every win to the connections of a GB suffixed filly or mare that wins a race for fillies and mares only, half that if the stallion is based overseas or the race is for both sexes or a National Hunt Flat Race. The third focus is the development and upgrade of the race programme for females only. Taken together these three promotions have massively changed the viability of British studs and the desirability of fillies in particular. Racing fillies is massively important as it means that they will be tried on the racecourse (currently under 25% of NH fillies actually race) so that breeders know which are the most talented and which the most sound, both important pieces of information. The ambition of all owners is to win a race at the Cheltenham Festival so it is excellent that in 2021 there will be a Class 1 steeplechase for mares only added to the Class 1 novice hurdle (the Dawn Run) and the Class 1 hurdle race for more experienced horses (the David Nicholson). These hurdle races are now very successful races so though it may take time for the chase to build to the desired level I am confident that this will happen. I am delighted and highly honoured that the Cheltenham executive suggested that an appropriate thank you for serving as Chairman of the racecourse for nine Festivals would be that the “handle” for this race should be Liberthine. © John Grossick Liberthine ran 24 times for us, retiring sound after winning three Class 1 races, including a hurdle race at Auteuil as a three-year-old, the Mildmay of Flete, the name then of the 2m5f handicap steeplechase at the Cheltenham Festival and the Topham Handicap steeplechase at Aintree over the Grand National fences. She was also placed in three other Class 1 steeplechases. Liberthine joined our Upton Viva Stud in 2007 after she had come fifth in the Grand National Both Liberthine and her three-parts-brother Long Run won at the Cheltenham Festival which and in 2008 gave birth to a filly, Free Thinking, by Hernando. I enjoy the daily routine of Broodmare syndication is something that we are actively working on the stud – attending morning scanning to discuss trying to promote here at Peel Hall Stud to give people things with the vet, holding mares during covering, assessing the opportunity to own a share in a broodmare and enjoy how new foals are developing – so in these ways my world a different kind of experience to that offered by the more barely changed. traditional ways of owning a share in a racehorse and maybe But following the lockdown in March, 2020 was very different even return you a profit on your investment! in other ways. Fortunately the season passed with no-one catching the virus. There are many advantages to broodmare syndication, primarily giving people access to high-class mares and stallions that might otherwise be unattainable whether that be because the owner Another difference was that I had to do more work, since the visitors I enjoy showing round the couldn’t afford a mare on their own or they felt they didn’t have the knowledge on their own stud were unable to come, so I had no excuse not to do my other jobs. In particular, any excess of demand over available funds may be dealt with by reducing the value of grants awarded for category 3 mares to £1,000. If this step becomes necessary, every effort will be made to notify those affected as soon as possible. 10 The TBA NH Committee’s decision on any matter regarding the 2021 Elite NH Mares’ Incentive Scheme will be regarded as final. 20 21
