2019 Summer Reading Program Centreville Middle School Centreville Middle School Summer Reading Program*
Overview The main goal of Centreville Middle School’s Summer Reading Program is to encourage reading through the summer so students return in the fall prepared for a new school year. We also have a creative component for students to take their reading a step further. Note: Students may choose Option 1 or Option 2 or do both options. Option 1: Reading to Meet a Goal Attached you will find a SUMMER READING GOAL SHEET. Students will set a goal at the end of school (minimum of 3 books) and as they finish books during the summer they will write the title on the same sheet. Students can read anything they are intersted in.. Mrs. Sanger, CMS Media Assistant, has created two lists (which are attached) to help with book choices. *Sanger’s Sizzlin’ Summer Selections *Top CMS Checkouts of the Year Prizes: Students who return to school having at least met their goal or have read 3 books will be entered into a drawing for Fall CMS Scholastic Book Fair coupons and will be invited to the CMS Ice Cream Social on September 17th. Option 2: Creative Projects On the back of the SUMMER READING GOAL SHEET is a list of projects for those students who wish to show their creativity. Once students choose a project, we encourage them to have fun creating something for other students to see. When students return to school, they will be invited to the CMS Ice Cream Social on September 17th where all projects will be shared and winners will be chosen by their peers. First, second, and third place winners will receive Fall CMS Scholastic Book Fair coupons. *CMS Summer Reading Program is optional but we encourage all to participate Centreville Middle School Summer Reading Program* Summer Reading Goal Sheet

Your job is to promote your novel so that others will be persuaded to read it. To do this you will create a persuasive and eye-catching visual that would appear in a bookstore or on a website (poster or technology*). It must include persuasive phrases, quotes, and pictures/graphics. I’ve Been Framed Create “framed” portraits of the main characters from your novel. In the background of each portrait include important setting elements that relate to the character Create a Comic Turn an important scene or chapter into a comic book, complete with comic-style illustrations. Must include a minimum of eight frames using dialogue bubbles, thinking bubbles, color, and narrative. Script It Imagine YOU are the author of the book you have just read. Suddenly your book becomes a best seller and Paramount pictures wants to make it into a movie. They ask you to create a movie theatre poster or movie trailer* to promote your movie. Picture Says a Thousand Words Recreate the old cover and then create a new one for your book by hand-drawing a poster or using technology*. Then, explain your reasoning for the new design. Make sure to bring a copy of your book to display with your project. *CMS LOVES TECHNOLOGY! -Consider some of the following technology tools for your project: Prezi, Bitstrips, Animoto, Movie Maker, Photostory, We Video, eBook, Powerpoint, Nearpod …… -If you are using technology for your project you must make sure that you are able to show it on your Chromebook. -If you need or prefer to bring in a laptop, please speak with Ms. Muller first. We can store it in the safe during the day, but CMS is not responsible for stolen or damaged personal laptops. *CMS Summer Reading Program is optional but we encourage all to participate SANGER’S SIZZLING SUMMER SELECTIONS Summer 2019 Fiction Merci Suárez Changes Gears by Meg Medina Newbery Medal Winner 2019
