Community Message New�Drywall�Packaging�Requirements�As�Of�January�1 Effective�January�1,�2019,�asbestos�containing�material�(ACM),�including potential�ACM,�such�as�drywall�pre-dating�1990,�must�be�contained�in�two CLEAR,�marked,�6-mil�plastic�bags,�in�order�to�be�accepted�at�the�Mission Landfill.�Bags�should�be�tied�"goose-neck"�style�with�duct�tape,�with�the inner�bag�placed�upside�down�into�the�outer�bag.�Please�follow�landfill�staff's instructions�on�where�to�deposit�bags�at�the�site. Support Nature (And�Your�Own�Well-being) Natural�habitat�areas�are�disappearing�quickly�due�to�human-related�activities. You�have�an�opportunity�to�make�it�up�to�nature�in�your�own�backyard.�Living near�greenspaces�is�also�good�for�your�mental�and�physical�well-being. Native�plants�are�not�only�low-maintenance,�they�also�provide�important�habitat for�bees,�butterflies�and�other�beneficial�insects.�We�need�these�pollinators for�food�production�and�to�keep�ecosystems�balanced.�Native�plants�do�well without�pesticides�or�fertilizers,�don't�need�to�be�watered�much,�can�stabilize stream�banks�and�provide�food�and�shelter�for�birds�and�other�wildlife�species. The�South�Coast�Conservation�Program�(SCCP)�recently�released�the�Gardening With�Native�Plants�Guide,�which�provides�hands-on�information�on�how�to create�a�wildlife�habitat�garden.�The�features�pictures�of�40�native�plant�species, so�you�can�see�at�first�glance�which�plants�may�be�right�for�you! The�guide�can�be�downloaded�free�of�charge�from�the�SCCP�website�at�sccp.ca under�Resources�for�Landowners.�Hardcopies�can�be�mailed�for�a�fee�upon request. Winter Games - Be A Good Sport Curbside�Collection (It's�All�Fun�Until�Somebody�Gets�Hurt) It�is�not�safe�to�manoeuvre�large�collection�vehicles�down�slippery�and narrowed roadways.�If�your collection�is�missed�due�to�bad�weather,�please�be�patient and�check�the�District's�website�(mission.ca),�or�call�the�curbside�collection contractor�at�604-820-6487�for�updates. Road�Clearing (Marathon�Plow�Driving) During�snowfall�events,�District�crews�work�around�the�clock�to�clear�snow�and ice�from�roads�on�a�priority�basis. Please�note�that�roads�are�not�cleared�to�bare pavement.�Check�the�District's�website�(www.mission.ca)�or call�Public�Works�at 604-820-3761�for�updates. Clearing�Sidewalks (Cardio�And�Strength�Training) Residents�are�responsible for�keeping sidewalks in�front�of�their�homes�free�of snow�and�ice. Please�ensure�safe�passage�for�everyone,�including�elderly�people and�people�with�mobility�issues,�to�avoid�liabilities.�If�you�have�a�neighbour�who cannot�clear�the�sidewalk,�consider�offering�help. Beware Of These Plants Giant�Hogweed Knotweed Giant�Hogweed�can�cause�third�degree Mature Hogweed Knotweed�(Japanese,�Himalayan,�giant�and�bohemian)�is�not�a burns,�blindness�and�permanent health�hazard,�but�it�is�highly�invasive�and�can�grow�through scarring�on�contact.�It�can�reach�5�metres concrete,�including�building�foundations.�Its�root�system in�height�and�features�white,�umbrella-like can�extend�20�metres�sideways�and�5�metres�into�the�ground. flowerheads�that�produce�up�to�50,000 seeds. Only Rain In Your Drain Even�Clean�Tap�Water�Can�Pollute�Fish�Habitat Unlike�water�that�goes�down�your�household�drain,�water�that�flows�into�storm�drains�is�not treated�or�filtered,�and�all�storm�drains�eventually�lead�to�fish-bearing�creeks,�rivers�or�lakes. Many�municipal�water�supply�disinfection�systems�include�the�use�of�hypochlorite,�which�is�very toxic�to�aquatic�organisms.�Hypochlorite�is�also�the�active�ingredient�in�many�household�bleach products.�It�is�therefore�important�to�never�introduce�wash�water�from�vehicles�or�driveways�into storm�drains,�and�even�straight�tap�water�should�not�be�allowed�to�flow�into�storm�sewer�intakes. Never�use�bleach�when�cleaning�concrete�or�asphalt surfaces,�such�as�driveways,�and�direct�runoff�to�a�porous surface,�such�as�gravel�or�grass.�Clean�paint�brushes�and rollers�inside�your�home,�so�that�the�wash�water�will�go to�the�sanitary,�rather�than�the�storm�sewer. Visiting�a�commercial�car�wash�is�the�best option�for�cleaning�your�vehicle,�as�wash water�from�these�operations�is�directed�to the�sanitary�sewer�and�receives�treatment. If�you�must�wash�your�vehicle�at�home, it�is�best�practice�to�do�so�on�a�grass or�gravel�area,�so�that�wash�water�can infiltrate�into�the�ground.�Sparing�use�of�a biodegradable,�phosphate-free�detergent should�not�damage�your�lawn.

Bears�are�only�doing�what�comes�naturally�to�them.�We�cannot�train�them, so�it�is�our�responsibilty�as�human�beings�to�ensure�we�don't�lure�them�into our�residential�neighbourhoods.�Bears�that�become�habituated�to�human�food sources�are�usually�destroyed.�Several�bears�are�shot�by�conservation officers�in�Mission�every�year. The�District's�Solid�Waste�Management�Bylaw�5526-2016�requires�that�garbage, recyclables�and�compost�only�be�set�out�for�curbside�collection�between�5:00 am�and�8:00�am,�unless�they�are�set�out�in�a�mobile,�secure�enclosure.�The�fine for�leaving�attractants�outside�or�setting�out�curbside�materials�early Wildilfe�is�regulated�by�the provincial�Wildlife�Act,�which�is is�$250�per�day. administered�by�conservation�officers.�Feeding�or�attracting�bears�is an�offence�under�the�act.�Bears�that�become�habituated�to�human food�sources�will�generally�be�trapped�and�destroyed,�not�relocated.
