WELCOME TO BALTIMORE and the 109th Annual Convention of the National Council of Teachers of English! We have an exciting few days ahead of us, and we are indebted to all of the NCTE staff and volunteer leaders who have already poured so much creativity and energy into this Convention. You, also, are key to making this Convention a success. As an NCTE member or simply as an attendee at this Convention, you are continuing an important tradition. For over 100 years, NCTE has been the professional home for teachers of writing, rhetoric, literature, English language arts, and literacy. Established in 1911, NCTE was formed by English teachers and professors “to improve the quality of instruction in English at all levels.” As the nation’s oldest organization of preK–graduate level literacy educators, NCTE has a rich history of deriving expertise and advocacy from its members’ professional research, practice, and knowledge. The tradition continues with you: your expertise is at the heart of this Convention on Spirited Inquiry. Collectively, you as attendees are furthering the expertise and advocacy of NCTE. As presenters and rhetors, listeners and interlocutors, you are shaping our professional practices, research, and knowledge. You are more than English language arts teachers: you are spirited inquirers and teacher-writers, and in our days together here in Baltimore, you are imagining, composing, and revising new futures for the students in our classrooms and the learners in our communities. You are crafting questions that matter, pursuing studies that dig deeper, sharing findings that demand action and propel us to change. Inquiry that is meaningful requires us to pause—to stop and notice, and then to respond. What makes us inquire is more than just an unusual person or remarkable event. In fact, we bypass potential moments of inquiry on a daily basis, moving forward in a rush or routine without giving a second thought to what may catch another person’s curiosity. To inquire, we must be willing to notice. We must also have the leisure and safety to wonder, to tarry and to question, to puzzle and delight. At this Convention, take the time to inquire. There are over 800 sessions to choose from, including featured sessions that align with some of the most pressing topics in our field. There are also spaces designed for you to collaborate with others in informal inquiry. Take time to sit with new and familiar colleagues, gather around a whiteboard, and together explore the questions and ideas that matter most to you and your students. Dare to imagine, play, and seek surprising conclusions. Over these next few days, let’s dare to wonder, to be bold and creative in our curiosity. Let’s focus together on the role that spirited inquiry plays in our students’ learning in English, language arts, literacy, and composition. Let’s reawaken our own spirit of inquiry as teachers, leaders, writers, readers, and thinkers. Our time together in Baltimore is short, but full of potential. Thank you for your passion for learning, and for bringing your questions and ideas back home to invest in your students and colleagues there. Thank you for making this a great Convention! WELCOME to the 109th NCTE Annual Convention On behalf of the strong team producing this year’s event and its many parts, we welcome you to the renowned experience known as the NCTE Annual Convention. Whether you are joining us for the first time or the Convention is a sacred, annual event on your calendar, we are so pleased to have you with us this year in Baltimore. Our team has planned many features to support your professional learning experience. In response to attendee feedback, we have added a full extra day of programming on Thursday, November 21. As participation in NCTE expands, we know it’s important to offer a growing palette of sessions to you. We have also tapped into Baltimore’s rich history and resources for special literary tours devoted to Frederick Douglass, Edgar Allan Poe, and the legendary Pratt Library—all at our doorstep this week. The Convention’s growth also includes a second year of Build Your Stack® programming in the Exhibit Hall. The popular Build Your Stack sessions feature teachers and titles that open important conversations on topics relevant to our classrooms and communities. The sessions can be an intimate way to learn more about titles, connect with colleagues, and meet authors. We acknowledge the incredible support of the Maryland Council of Teachers of English Language Arts, the Virginia Association of Teachers of English, and nearly 200 volunteers they’ve assembled to help make this event possible. Affiliates contribute significantly to each and every NCTE Annual Convention, and we could not hold this event without the support of local literacy educators. Beyond this important contribution to the Annual Convention, NCTE’s proud network of state and regional affiliates makes it possible for our vision and mission to reach teachers at all levels. As you experience this Convention, keep an eye out for the future. The 2020 NCTE Annual Convention will be held next year in Denver, Colorado, from November 19 to 22. If you haven’t yet presented at an NCTE Convention, we invite you to consider authoring a session proposal and submitting it on or before January 15. Presenting at the Convention is a fantastic opportunity to grow your voice and share your practices with literacy educators from across the country. We also encourage you to stay connected to NCTE throughout the year. If you haven’t yet sampled our books, journals, or growing array of professional learning opportunities, please do so today. We are your professional home. Membership is the best way to become more involved in both NCTE and the profession at large. The calendar printed on page 15 of this program will keep you up to date. We are so glad you are attending this year, and we look forward to learning with you. Warmly, Emily Kirkpatrick NCTE Executive Director 10 2019 NCTE ANNUAL CONVENTION PROGRAM

15 TIPS ON PREPARING FOR CONVENTION 1. Plan ahead by checking out the program online before your arrival. 2. Remember that you don’t have to attend every session. 3. Look for sessions you’re interested in, but not exclusively sessions with notable speakers. Perhaps go outside your comfort zone and try a session that is different from what you would normally choose. 4. Consider back-up sessions you’d like to attend, in case the one you want is full. 5. Carry your charger(s) for your phone and any other must-have electronics. 6. Bring snacks to fuel your body. 7. Stay hydrated. 8. Wear comfortable shoes. 9. Carry a sweater or a lightweight jacket. 10. The dress code is comfortable casual or “conference chic.” 11. Pack an extra bag for your book purchases. This year our bookseller is The Ivy Bookshop. 12. Think about shipping your clothes home instead of the books. Your clothes weigh far less! 13. Keep a lookout for the NCTE community ambassadors: Lisa Castillo, Jessica Hunter, Jeremy Hyler, Christina Nosek, Michelle Rankins, Lee Rutherford, Lindsay Schneider, and Shawn Towner. They will be wearing Ambassador T-Shirts and giving out exclusive secret stickers. 14. Be sure to follow them on Twitter: (@RGVReaderLeader, @mshunterteaches, @jeremybballer, @ChristinaNosek, @michellerankins, @LeeARutherford, @LindsayFrances_, @mrtowner) and use the hashtag #NCTE19 to keep up #NCTE19 with all things convention related. 15. Don’t forget to breathe, process and reflect. NCTE’s community ambassadors are here to support you in your convention and membership journey. They’ll be there at the First-Timers’ Welcome on Friday and you will be able to find them elsewhere over the next several days. Go up and say hi and ask them whatever questions you may have about how to navigate #NCTE19 or how to make the most of your membership. They’re eager to meet you. 14 2019 NCTE ANNUAL CONVENTION PROGRAM

GENERAL SESSIONS WEDNESDAY, NOV. 20 | 7:30–9:30 P.M. | BALLROOM I & III ASPIRE TO INSPIRE: On the Occasion of the 20th Anniversary of The Freedom Writers Diary with Erin Gruwell Join NCTE Secondary Section leaders and author and education activist Erin Gruwell for a discussion about how writing can transform lives. After the session Gruwell will have a “meet and greet” where she will be available for photos and book signings. The Freedom Writers Diary will be available for purchase. Erin Gruwell started college expecting to become a lawyer; however, following the Rodney King verdict and the subsequent LA riots, Gruwell realized that her calling was not in a courtroom, but a classroom. Gruwell began her tenure as an English teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Her students were considered unteachable, and the educational system had all but forgotten about them. Despite school administrators and other staff doubting that these students would ever achieve anything, Gruwell pressed on, believing that any child can succeed. After intercepting a racist caricature depicting one of her students, Gruwell told her students that it was drawings like that which led to the Holocaust. She was met by uncomprehending looks and one of her students asked her what was “the Holocaust?” None of her students had heard of one of the defining moments of the 20th century. So she rebooted her entire curriculum, using treasured books like The Diary of Anne Frank as her guide to combat intolerance and misunderstanding. Her students began recording their thoughts and feelings in their own diaries, eventually dubbing themselves the “Freedom Writers.” Their stories became The Freedom Writers Diary, which quickly climbed to the top of The New York Times Bestsellers List. By fostering an educational philosophy that valued and promoted diversity, Gruwell transformed her students’ lives. She encouraged them to rethink rigid beliefs about themselves and others, reconsider their own daily decisions, and ultimately, rechart their future. With Gruwell’s support, they eluded teenage pregnancy, drugs, and violence in order to become aspiring college students, published writers, and citizens for change. Erin Gruwell continues to fight for equality in education as a professor of practice with Bay Path University, as a Chapman University fellow, and by sharing her teaching practices with educators from around the world via Freedom Writer teacher training institutes though the Freedom Writers Foundation. Gruwell and her students’ story became the basis for the 2007 feature film, Freedom Writers, and the documentary, Freedom Writers: Stories from the Heart, which aired nationally on PBS in 2019. In September of 2019, The Freedom Writers Diary was republished with twenty new stories to celebrate the book’s twentieth anniversary. 24 2019 NCTE ANNUAL CONVENTION PROGRAM
