HKDR was founded in 2003 for the specific purpose of saving dogs and puppies from the Hong Kong Government’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) Animal Management Centres, where thousands of dogs and puppies are destroyed every year. They are homeless and unwanted, and have just four days to live unless they are chosen for rehoming. Only a small percentage of these dogs and puppies are lucky enough to be rescued by HKDR. Although almost all HKDR dogs and puppies are still rescued from AFCD, these days many of our dogs are also ex-breeding dogs, those that are no longer useful for the purpose of producing puppies for the pet trade. These dogs are inevitably in poor health and condition due to their previous hard lives, and they need extensive veterinary treatment. All of the dogs and puppies that HKDR take in for rehoming Dedication are . health checked, vaccinated, given flea, tick and heartworm prevention and desexed. Those who require additional veterinary treatment or surgery are given the best available. Dogs with behaviour problems are rehabilitated using Positive Reinforcement training methods to make them ready for adoption. HKDR is proud to be a No Kill Organisation, meaning that no dog under our care will be euthanised for any reason other than when it is the only humane option. HKDR is funded almost entirely by private donations, sponsorship, merchandise sales and fundraising events, and relies heavily on the time and efforts of dedicated volunteers Sally Andersen, ATL Exemption No. ORG-00001 to be able to operate Founder & Chairperson

DOGS RESCUED They have just four days to live unless they are chosen for re-homing, so HKDR will rescue these animals as a priority before considering others. Around 60% of our dogs were rescued from AFCD while approximately 28% of them were from direct surrender. They will then be sent to either of our two Homing Centres, or foster families, until being adopted. The dogs that come from AFCD are all ages, shapes, sizes, and all breeds and colours. There is no breed or age discrimination as to which dog lives or dies. The only criteria for selecting dogs for rehoming is that they must be healthy, or in a treatable condition, friendly (or with the potential to be so as many dogs are terrified) and of a homeable type. Currently, we are taking ATL Exemption No. care of more than 650 dogs. ORG-00001

Typhoon Mangkhut (Sept 2018) There was a huge amount of cleaning, tidying and repair to be done after the devastating effects of Typhoon Mangkhut. We were grateful for the fact that many dogs had been taken to foster homes from Tai Po, and that we had staff and volunteers at both Homing Centres who took care of the remaining numbers. It cost a lot of money and time to repair, but all dogs were kept safe, with some were even adopted by their typhoon fosters. Unforgettable Moments ATL Exemption No. ORG-00001
