Dr Gavin Cho President President’s Report We had a fantastic presentation from Dr Ian Coutts, Dermatologist last month (report from Andy Wong in this newsletter). The Wellington Club is proving a popular venue for our monthly branch meetings with it’s high quality of service and food, and choice of drinks at the bar. As with the last 2 meetings, we have been fortunate to get sponsorship for the next meeting whereby James Talbot will be speaking on “Treatment Planning: Making Sense of Complex Cases”. Complimentary drinks will be provided for those attending the dinner. If you are arriving for the meeting and speaker only, feel free to drop in from 7pm and order a drink (eftpos purchase only), introduce yourselves and meet some of your colleagues. Hopefully those later arrivals to the meeting will be able to get into the venue for the next meeting (with access being a problem after 7:30pm the last 2 meetings) – perhaps it will encourage a slightly earlier arrival! This last month NZDA put on the Wellness/Invigorate Tour and at this lecture, I was made aware how fortunate we are as a branch to have critical mass and a sufficient number of willing volunteers to be able to advocate and provide support for our members, and assist the community. Upon speaking to a couple of attendees from Carterton, I become aware our colleagues in the Wairarapa do not have this luxury. I am told they are under resourced and challenged in many ways including not having enough appointment hours for patient demand, and lack of accessibility to specialist advice and expertise. It is too long a drive to attend either Manawatu or our branch meetings (unless they live in the Wellington Region). I would like to emphasise that the success of your branch relies on our members giving up some of their personal time to assist in any small way you can – giving back to the community, and the profession. As we all know, this can be incredibly rewarding. The Wellington Branch has a number of ways you April 2018
can do this – and I encourage you to make contact with one of the committee members if you can assist in any way. Incidentally there will be a number of new service awards being presented at this years NZDA conference and we intend to nominate as a branch, some of our members. More about this in the newsletter. Last month, I had the privilege of awarding the NZDA Certificate in Dental Assisting to six 2017 graduates who were able to attend (out of a class of almost 20). It was clear to me that the graduates and their family and friends were immensely proud of their achievement, particularly as the course has developed into an intensive and comprehensive qualification, requiring a huge investment in time and commitment over a whole year. I would like to acknowledge and thank Mary McBride who is stepping down after a long term of 6 years of being the NZDA Dental Assisting Course Coordinator. Sugar has been making the headlines this last month with the Stuff articles ‘The Sugar Fix’ series which highlights the Diabetes Epidemic & the question of whether we should we tax sugar. This has made very interesting reading and a number of points stood out for me in the latest article: • The cost to our health system of an increasing proportion of New Zealanders with Diabetes (predicted to be 10% of our population by 2050) will have a huge impact on health funding. • A sugar tax in Philadelphia and Berkeley has allowed for revenue to be directed to areas like Early Childhood Education and improving children’s health and sports, and the UK intends doing the same. The cost in introducing and administering the tax has not been a barrier. • More intensive action by the beverage companies to reformulate their drinks is seen where a sugar tax is introduced Here in NZ, our Health Minister David Clark has said he is optimistic about turning NZ trends around without imposing a sugar tax and prefers working with the industry. I encourage colleagues to look up the articles the ‘The Sugar Fix’ Series for a more informative read. With the increased coverage of this topic, we should be capitalizing on this and having conversations with friends, patients, schools and sporting organizations about how we can do our little bit to perhaps make little changes like getting them to look up the Healthy Futures website to access water kits or reviewing the tuck shop food options. ~ Gavin Cho April 2018

Dr Excell stated that he had not contact Dr Ferry regarding the GPDP role as Dr Christopher Bing had accepted the role. Dr Morris Wong confirmed that he had booked the Dowse in Lower Hutt for the June Branch meeting. CORRESPONDENCE: As tabled Moved: Dr Excell Seconded: Dr Hitchings FINANCIAL REPORT: As tabled Dr Hitchings noted that some Branch members have credit balances as new members are offered a free meal which is anticipated to be taken early in their membership however some have never taken up the offer and the way in which this is tracked in our system means they are left with a credit. Dr Hitchings sought approval to contact these members giving a time period of 4 months to use the credit or lose it. This will be done following the Branch subscriptions being sent to members. Dr Hitchings informed the Committee that she is in the process of producing the Branch subscription invoices and will be sending these out shortly. Accepted: Dr Ichim Seconded: Dr McKelvey GENERAL BUSINESS: • DA Graduation: The Admin Assistant reported that the feedback from 2017 Graduates has been humbling as a ceremony was not expected. The confirmed date is Friday 2 nd March at The Wellington Club @6pm. The Admin Assistant did confirm with the Committee that guest for graduates is not to be any more than 4 guests. • Mural: Dr Ichim was delighted to inform the Committee that she has found a wall! Perseverance finally paid off with contact being made with Tom Johnson who runs a Youth Centre in Taita Shopping Centre in Lower Hutt. They have approximately 200 members and a Mural would add enormous impact – they are keen to promote the water not fizzy and believe if the youth were involved in the consultation and creation process with Healthy Families, HCC Anti-Grafitti we could make quite the impact. The Committee enthusiastically endorsed this project and gave Dr Ichim the mandate to move forward. April 2018
• Water kits: Dr Ichim was delighted to report that following the Branch meeting the 16 schools on the list all have been pledged for kits by members. Dr Ichim will contact those members offering them the opportunity to have someone from their Practice to deliver the kits to their allocated school. Dr Ichim also asked Committee members if they would like to be involved in the hand-over process. NZDA are keen to roll this project out nation-wide\ however it was agree that we would continue with this pilot for 6 months then revaluate and at that point involve NZDA. Dr Ichim will write an article for the next newsletter. • Committee Positions: Dr Cho asked the Committee to look at their allocated Committee positions and confirm them at the next meeting. Dr Cho also asked Dr McKelvey to update the web site with the new Committee positions. • Branch Meetings: Dr Andy Wong will write the minutes and the speaker updates. Dr Cho will purchase a packet of thank you cards that will be written on the night of the presentation and given to the speaker along with the wine. • Study Groups: Following discussion it was agreed that a Branch co- ordinator for Wellington Branch study groups would benefit not only new Branch members but also existing members who either want to join a study group or move to another study group. It was suggested that Dr Templeman might consider this role. This will be confirmed at the next Committee meeting. • Branch Meeting: Dr Hitchings confirmed with Dr Cho that in months where we do not have sponsorship for the Branch meeting there will be no free drinks nor canapés. • Dr Cho asked the Committee to consider instigating Dental Practice Awards. This is to be discussed in more depth at the next Committee meeting. • Dr Excell was delighted to inform the Committee that Dr Elizabeth Hitchings is the new Salaried Representative on the NZDA Board. Dr Hitchings was warmly congratulated by all present. • Dr Excell also asked the Committee to complete and encourage other to complete the Fee and Income survey from NZDA. Dr Excell will also remind Members at the Branch meeting about the Student Observer programme. NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY 14TH MARCH 2018 April 2018
Branch Golf Day Report The Branch Golf Day was Friday December 1st. With the generous sponsorship of Henry Schein NZ and much appreciated refreshments from Medical Assurance the small but quality field found the course at Royal Wellington in beautiful condition and the day, as usual, perfect. We have been very lucky with the last cancellation probably in 1974. Edward Harrison of Henry Schein, who left the field in his wake with a scintillating gross 79 captured the Medic DDS Trophy with David Corcoran runner-up. The handicap division Dental & Medical Cup was won by Jeff Annan with 40 Stableford points. Geoff Hunt with 36 was runner-up. Frank Ven Den Borst was on form when it mattered, winning both the Closest to the Pin and the Longest Drive. We have greatly valued the relationship with chief sponsor, Henry Schein for more than twenty years. They provide generous prizes and Mike Engle, Ed Harrison and previously Garth Bradford, have regularly attended to ensure that the day goes well. MAS have been kindly providing the refreshments for over ten years. With only ten on the starting sheet this year, I feel that this is really the minimum to justify our sponsors efforts. However, they are happy to continue so the event will be on the calendar this year. I would like to see the numbers double to twenty for December.” Thanks Sharyn ~ Dr Jeff Annan April 2018
NZDA Certficate in Dental Assisting Graduation The Graduation evening for the Dental Assitants that sucessfully completed the NZDA Certficate in Dental Assisting took place on the 2nd of March 2018. The evening was attended by six of the graduating assistants and their families and friends. Attached are some photos from the evening. The Wellington Branch would like to again thank Mary McBride who is stepping down after a long term of six years of being the NZDA Dental Assisting Course Coordinator. Mary has been instrumental in helping almost twenty Dental Assitants from Wellington complete the Certificate last year and many more over the last six years. April 2018

NZDA Student Observer Programme WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Wellington is hosting the NZDA student observation programme this year and we need your help! The programme will take place over five days during the university holidays: 28th May–1st June. The aim of this programme is “to provide final year BDS students from the University of Otago with insight into what it is like to work in private practice”. This will be achieved through them observing at a different private practice each day, whilst spending the week with a local dentist in their home. We need your help to make this programme a success. If you are interested, then you can help with one or both of the following: • Billet a student(s) for the week in your home • Open up your practice for observation or both Ami from NZDA runs the programme and her email is ami@nzda.org.nz We have already had a few dentists open their homes for the students but we are looking for more homes for the week. Annual Subs Annual Subscription to the Branch is due. Dr. Liz Hitchings (Hon. Treasurer) has sent out annual membership subscription invoices to all members at the start of March. If anyone has not received their invoice or has any questions please contact Liz on nzdatreasurer@outlook.co.nz April 2018
Summary of the March Presentation Dermatology & Dentists the Role of Skin Care. Dr Ian Coutts – Consultant Dermatologist. 7th March, 2018. Pathology of the skin can generally be divided into two groups: epidermal and dermal. Common presentations of epidermal skin pathologies include: scaling, crusting, lichenifications and blistering. Common presentations of dermal skin pathologies include: erythema and induration. As a dentist, in regards to dermatological problems, we may commonly encounter two types of hypersensitivity reactions. Type I (allergy) hypersensitivity, for example: atopy; and Type IV (delayed-type) hypersensitivity, for example: contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis to toothpastes and mouthwashes. Patients can react to: flavourings, colouring agents, perfumed products, dental floss-colophony, abrasives and detergents. Be wary of any patient with persistent eczematous cheilitis/stomatitis. Ask the patient, have they reacted to anything before? Hand eczema (occupational dermatitis) is a big risk for health professionals. This is due to a combination of: constant hand-washing, contact allergy, irritant/ mechanical factors, and the person’s innate constitution (atopy). Prevention and management include using replacing rubber/latex gloves with plastic/nitrile gloves. Hand cleansing with alcohol rubs vs. conventional soaps. It is important to be aware that just because a glove is labelled ‘hypoallergenic’ it may not mean that it is latex free. April 2018
Dentists are perfectly placed to examine the head and neck area. We have good access, good visibility and good lighting. It is important to check for skin lesions when we do our head & neck examinations. The general principle for lesions is that if you see a lesion, ask if they have had it checked. If not, then refer. There are a number of skin lesions that can affect the head and neck area, they range from the relatively benign: verrucas, acne vulgaris, tinea capitis, angular cheilitis and peri-oral dermatitis; to the serious: pemphigus, lupus, and orofacial granulomatosis (OFG); to the malignant: BCCs, SCCs and melanomas. When to refer to a dermatoogist: • Suspected skin cancer, simple primary to complex tumours. • Poorly defined head and neck cancers without obvious lymphadenopathy. • Recurrent tumours consideration of mohs surgery. Mohs surgery is a precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer. During the surgery, thin layers of cancer-containing skin are progressively removed and examined until only cancer-free tissue remains. April 2018
