A message from the management Michelangelo Resort & Spa In 2016, we tried to better understand how we can achieve a more sustainable Michelangelo Resort & Spa. In 2017 we decided to participate to Travelife awarding program in order to improve hotel sustainability. As we continue to improve high level of facilities and services, are more important than ever to prove its high standards ethical behavior and the pursuit of excellence in the field of the environment responsibility. We understand that conservation and community engagement is more than a moral imperative. At the end of the day it makes good business also. New, socially responsible policies bring us customer preference and loyalty from the next generation travelers and workforce. Main ECO Policy In order to be realistic in setting goals, according to local considerations, so that environmental measures and actions will not undermine the quality of the existing of Michelangelo Resort & Spa Michelangelo hotel product. • To implement measures of natural resources management (energy, water, raw materials) and waste, with the aim of improving the local environment and to encourage other members of the tourism industry to undertake corresponding initiatives. • Environmental measures will feature in order of priority: a) the use of local recycled, recyclable and natural, biodegradable materials, b) energy and water saving, c) minimizing and re-using waste and d) controlling air / soil / water pollution. • The conservation and protection of the landscape, wildlife and historical resources near the hotel will have priority over other regional or general projects. • To increase level of awareness of environmental issues within its own organization, to local residents, hotel guests and business partners. • To include improved environmental considerations in all new building and renovation plans. • To balance financial benefits from waste management and energy saving against increased initial costs of other improvements.
Environmental Policy of Michelangelo Resort & Spa The Michelangelo Resort & Spa follows environmental priorities and is committed to ameliorate its operation through its environmental friendly policy. This policy is created in an effort to minimize its environmental footprint and includes all the different parameters which can contribute to succeed the scope. Scope • The policies and procedures constitute the general management direction and the commitment of the Hotel and inspect all the needed information for the important environmental aspects as energy, water consumption, waste management, evaluation of subcontractors and raw materials, food consumption etc. The staff and the directors follow the priorities, create working templates in each department of the Hotel and have a specific education for the policy and the aspects. The Michelangelo Resort& Spa is certified according the ISO 9001, which ensures for the prompt and efficient operation of the Hotel. • The environmental policy of the Hotel covers all the activities and the services (accommodation, food service, maintenance, purchasing, energy and water consumption, inside and internal activities etc) (Annex I, Annex III). Principles • The Michelangelo Resort & Spa is committed to comply to the national environmental legislation and regulations template, with other requirements to which the hotel subscribes • The Michelangelo Resort & Spa have all the needed permits for its legal operation • The Michelangelo Resort & Spa is committed to minimize the impact of its operations and services on the environment (Annex I, Annex III) • The Michelangelo Resort & Spa through often and specific controls is committed to avoid any environmental pollution. • The staff and the directors are educated in an effort to achieve the best results in our efforts
Environmental Policy of Michelangelo Resort & Spa • To register and understand the environmental issues associated with the Hotel’s activities. • To minimize the amount of wastes, (reuse, recycle, avoid food waste, control the packaging of the products used at the Hotel etc) (Annex I, Annex III) • To involve staff and guests to participate in this effort (Annex I) • To ensure that all employees are aware of their individual responsibilities for acting in accordance with the policy. • To minimize the consumption of energy and water through monitoring and specific actions and equipment (Annex III). • To increase the efficiency of use and purchase environmental friendly products wherever possible, while upholding the highest standards of comfort, quality and guest service (Annex III) • To support local societies with the purchase of local products and the promotion of local services and in this way minimize the foodmiles and ameliorate the environmental footprint of the hotel (Annex III) • To encourage engagement of our business with local communities. • To set and review environmental objectives and targets and to implement an action plan, addressing waste reduction, energy and resources conservation and raw materials and products environmental evaluation. The hotel will release the necessary resources to achieve these objectives using the best available practices, which do not entail excessive cost. Environment Energy and Michelangelo Resort & Spa Water Consumptions Waste Environment Chemicals Day of the Environment / June 5th Cleaning are outside the hotel monthly The Michelangelo Resort & Spa is situated at a Natura 2000 area (Limni Psalidi- Alyki) Environmental Actions Archipelagos - Institute of Marine Conservation - http://archipelago.gr/en/
Natura 2000, GR4210027, Kos: Limni Psalidi-Alyki • The site comprises of two wetlands located on the northern part (cape Louros including lake Psalidi) and west part (salt-marsh Alyki Tigaki)) of the island of Kos. • Lake Psalidi is actually a coastal salt-marsh, permanently flooded by salt or brachish water. It supports halophilous or semi-halophilous vegetation and permanently inundated reed-beds with Phragmites australis and Typha spp. • In the western part of the site there is Alyki, a small lagoon with a salt-pit, with halophytic vegatation, reedbeds,and Tamarix spp. Around it there are sand dunes and sand beaches. http://natura2000.eea.europa.eu/Natura2000/SDF.aspx?site=GR4210027
Energy Consumption and Michelangelo Resort & Spa 2017, 2018 ACTIONS Our actions to save energy will be by using LED bulbs, by placing motion sensor for lights, to put in all rooms magnetic cards and inform guests and staff how to save energy 2018 TARGET Our target is to reduce the energy consumption be 1% ENERGY CONSUMPTION What we do - Energy saving: • Use of economic light bulbs (LED) • Solar energy for water heating • Use of gas for kitchen appliances and dishwasher machine • Electric magnetic keycards for the automatic interruption of lighting and electrical appliances (except refrigerator) • Automatic interruption of air condition when the balcony door opens
Water Consumption and Michelangelo Resort & Spa 2017, 2018 ACTIONS We have already placed low flow filters in the bathrooms tabs, we inform our guest about our policy for towels and bed sheets and by placing stickers “save water” 2018 TARGET This year we are going to reduce water consumption by 3% by continuing change flow filters and implement a new plan of using the pool water. WATER CONSUMPTION What we do - Water saving: • Computerized garden irrigation • Information and awareness of staff • Towel change upon request and linen change every second day • Regular controls and immediate repair in case of leaks on pipes and taps • Dual flush toilet cisterns • Water flow regulators in bathroom taps
Chemicals Consumption and Michelangelo Resort & Spa 2017, 2018 ACTIONS We are going to decrease our chemical consumption by training our staff and by monitoring our chemicals 2018 TARGET Our target is to reduce the chemicals use by 2% in 2018 CHEMICALS CONSUMPTION What we do - Control of pollution of natural resources: • Regular chemical and microbiological water analyses (drinking water, sea and pools) in cooperation with a certified laboratory • All cleaning products and detergents are selected according to environmentally friendly standards regarding their composition, packaging and usage • Implementation of the HACCP food and hygiene safety management system
Waste Management and Michelangelo Resort & Spa 2017, 2018 ACTIONS We have already increase the number of our recycle bins in 2 places (Paper, glass, plastic / aluminum) 2018 TARGET Our target is to be able to recycle 90% of our waste. Also replacing bins for electric & electronic equipment What we do - Waste Management • We recycle: paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, batteries, light bulbs, electric and electronic equipment, used cooking oil, ink and toner cartridges, wood • We return: glass bottles of water, beer, refreshments and wine, water plastic bottles, palettes, beer barrels etc. • Purchase: we avoid individual packages and prefer large ones (catering), fruits and vegetables are purchased in returnable crates and sacks • Textile bags for shopping are offered to our hotel guests

Here are some priorities when purchasing food products: 1. Legality regarding food safety 2. High-quality products to reduce the risk of spoilage 3. Be within each stated consumption date 4. Contain materials that are not prohibited under the national institutional framework 5. Choose Greek products 6. Choose products related to tradition and gastronomy 7. Select products that come from nearby areas to reduce the environmental footprint 8. Choose products certified as organic, integrated management, which have less impact on the environment and are healthier 9. Choose products that have social certifications such as Fair Trade 10. Long-term partnerships and synergies with producers and cooperatives in the wider region of the enterprise At the same time, for all products, which are used for the operation of the hotel and cover the needs beyond the agri-food, the priorities are the following: 1.
