Welcome Dear Valued Members, We cordially invite you to join us for the 2nd Annual RMGCSA Conference and Expo. We have created this compelling event to bring more value to your RMGCSA membership. This event is a convenient, cost effective, and fun opportunity to earn your educational credits in an atmosphere that is tailored specifically for our membership. This two-day event includes education as well as table top displays brought to you by our affiliate partners. Day one will start with breakfast, registration, and message from the incoming RMGCSA Board of Directors. This will be followed by a lineup of engaging speakers. These speakers will present a wide range of golf course and career related topics. Following the days’ education there will be a welcome reception linking BBQ, games, and Monday Night Football. This reception will provide an opportunity for sponsors to meet with superintendents to discuss products and continue fostering relationships with the membership. Day two will offer a breakfast that will provide additional opportunities for members to network and catch up with seldom seen friends. Our day two education will include the pesticide credit session which will follow a great lineup of speakers. RMGCSA is excited to offer this event to our membership as an opportunity to learn and network. We think this is an outstanding conference where every member will find something which will benefit them personally and professionally. Prior to the event on Monday there will be a “pre-game” social event on Sunday night at 6:30. This is an “on your own” event but a great opportunity to talk shop with your peers. Speaker Bios Thomas Bastis - PGA Tour Agronomist Thomas Bastis grew up in San Diego, California and graduated with a bachelor's degree in horticulture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1995. He has been a superintendent for 20 years, with the last 15 at California Golf Club of San Francisco. In 2017, Thomas left his position at Cal Club and joined the PGA TOUR as a Competition Agronomist. Bastis is a certified arborist, pest control advisor, certified irrigation auditor and the Turfnet/Syngenta 2010 Superintendent of the Year. He holds a qualified applicators license and C-27 landscape contractor license. Bastis is an advocate of using new and upcoming technology alongside traditional maintenance practices to manage courses in the most environmentally and economically efficient manner. Jennifer Cassell - Bowditch & Cassell Public Affairs Jennifer is a partner with the government relations firm Bowditch & Cassell Public Affairs (BCPA) where she advocates on behalf of economic development, insurance, education, local government, and agriculture interests to the Colorado General Assembly. Jennifer co-founded BCPA after working as a lobbyist for Tomlinson & Associates, and as the legislative liaison for Governor Hickenlooper’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade. Jennifer was a junior golfer in Kansas and a member of the University of Kansas Women’s Golf Team from 2000-2002. Jennifer volunteers for the Colorado Golf Association as a member of the tournament committee. She holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and International Studies from the University of Kansas, and a Master of Arts degree in International Studies from the University of Denver. Brad Klein - Golf Channel Veteran golf travel, history and architecture journalist, Brad Klein is the senior writer for Golf Channel/GolfAdvisor.com and design consultant on golf course architecture. As an author, he has been collected by libraries worldwide. With more than 40 years of varied experiences within the game of golf - a career that began as a caddie on the PGA Tour - Klein served as the long-time architecture editor for Golfweek magazine and the founding editor of Superintendent News. Klein has written more than 1,500 feature articles on course architecture, resort travel, golf course development. golf history and the media for publications such as Golf Digest, Financial Times, New York Times and Sports Illustrated. He has published seven books on golf architecture and history, and was the winner for the USGA 2001 International Book Award. Sean McCue - Superintendent at The Country Club at Castle Pines Originally from Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Sean has been in the golf industry for 35 years. A graduate from Penn State University with a degree in Turfgrass Management. His career has taken him to Pennsylvania, Florida, California and Colorado. Some of the more notable stops along the way have been at Castle Pines Golf Club, Riviera Country Club, Boulder Country Club and for the last 23 years he has been the Golf Course Superintendent at The Country Club at Castle Pines. Micky McCord - McCord Golf Services and Safety In one way or another, Mickey McCord has been working on golf courses for over 40 years. He started caddying at Congress Lake CC near Akron Ohio, when he was 14, had a 25-year career as a Golf Course Superintendent, and 5 years ago started his own business, McCord Golf Services and Safety. Mickey’s interest in workplace safety training grew while working for The Carolinas Golf Group, a small management company operating courses in North and South Carolina, where he was required to hold a monthly safety training meeting. Since starting McCord Golf Services and Safety, Mickey has worked to raise safety awareness in golf course maintenance, and help Superintendents reduce accidents and injuries for their employees. He has written articles for Golf Course Industry, and GreenMaster magazines, helped Insurance Offices of America develop a safety calendar and training program for their clients, and speaks to local Golf Course Superintendent Associations about developing safety programs at their courses. Over 300 Golf Course Superintendents from Maine to California have used his videos to hold safety training meetings. Mickey has degrees in Turfgrass Management from Clemson University, and Business Administration from Ohio University, he is a 35-year member of the GCSAA, and achieved CGCS in 1994.
Sandra McDonald - Mountain West PEST Sandra McDonald founded Mountain West PEST (Pesticide Education & Safety Training) in 2009. Prior to establishing Mountain West PEST, Sandra was the Environmental and Pesticide Education Specialist at CSU. She worked for 13 years at CSU where she was involved in specialty crop pesticide research in addition to her role as a pesticide safety educator. Sandra also has extensive teaching experiences in pesticide safety, pesticide applicator exposure, pest management and pesticides in the environment. She is an active member of the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators, the Western Society of Weed Science and the Rocky Mountain Agribusiness Association. Andony Melathopoulos- Oregon State University Assistant Professor, Pollinator Health Extension Andony leads OSU Extension's efforts to design, develop, implement and evaluate a state-wide pollinator health program. The focus of this program is not restricted to Oregon's four managed pollinator species (honey bees, alfalfa leafcutter bees, orchard mason bees and alkali bees) but also to the state's rich endowment of wild species. David Phipps, GCSAA NW Field Staff Representative David Phipps is a 12-year GCSAA Class A member and has more than 20 years of experience in golf course management. He was an assistant superintendent at The Oregon Golf Club in West Linn, Ore., from 1990-2000, and most recently was the construction manager and superintendent at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City, Ore. Phipps has been active in serving on the national and chapter level. He participated in multiple GCSAA committees and was the Oregon GCSA chapter president in 2007. His efforts have earned him numerous honors and awards, including the Oregon GCSA's Richard Malpass Distinguished Service Award in 2000 and 2007, the Oregon Golf Association's Superintendent of the Year Award in 2009, the OGCSA's Michael S. Hindahl Environmental Stewardship Award of Excellence in 2011, and GCSAA's President's Award for Environmental Stewardship presented earlier this year at the GCSAA Education Conference in Las Vegas. Phipps is a five-time winner of the GCSAA/Golf Digest's Environmental Leaders in Golf Award Dr. John N. Rogers - Professor of Turfgrass Management at Michigan State University Dr. John N. Rogers, III is a Professor of Turfgrass Management in the Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University; he has been on the faculty there since 1988. He received a B.S. in Agronomy at the University of Arkansas in 1982 and then returned to be an Assistant Superintendent at Hardscrabble Country Club 1982-1983. He returned to the University of Arkansas and earned M.S. in Agronomy in 1985 and received his Ph.D. in Agronomy from Penn State University in 1988. His current turfgrass research interests at MSU include wear tolerance, turfgrass establishment and soil modification. He served as the lead scientist for the indoor turf project at the Pontiac Silverdome for the 1994 World Cup Soccer matches and the project leader of the Spartan Stadium turfgrass conversion in 2001-02. He was a turf consultant and project leader for the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympic Games and the 2008 UEFA Cup. His consultations on golf course, athletic field, and turfgrass matters are extensive throughout the world and his National and International lectures and presentations total over 185 with over 115 publications and one book. He is the senior author of two U.S. Patents. Chris Tomer- KDVR FOX-31 Denver Meteorologist Chris Tomer forecasts weather for KDVR FOX-31 News and KWGN Colorado’s Own Channel 2 in Denver. Tomer earned a B.S. in Meteorology from Valparaiso University graduating with Honors – where he also played basketball. Tomer is a fully certified meteorologist having earned the CBM and NWA Seal’s of Approval. Tomer also serves on the NWA panel of Television Seal evaluators. Chris has specialized knowledge of Mountain Meteorology. In his free time, Tomer climbs mountains, runs trails, mountain bikes, and snow skis. Tomer climbs all over North and South America. Chris completed climbing all 58 of Colorado’s 14ers in 2009. Many of his adventures are showcased on KDVR/KWGN-TV under the name of “Tomer’s Trails”. Chris won an Emmy Award for his 2015 Tomer’s Trails stories. Adam Van Dyke - Professional Turfgrass Solutions Adam is the owner and chief scientist of Professional Turfgrass Solutions located in suburbia Salt Lake City, Utah. His research with turfgrass is focused on golf courses to provide applied information to superintendents across the country. He enjoys presenting his research to turf groups and frequently publishes his findings in journals, magazines, and newsletters. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University in 2002, and a Masters’ degree in 2008, where he studied the effects of humic substances on the water holding capacity of putting green rootzones. Adam is a former golf course superintendent and moonlights as an adjunct instructor for Utah State University teaching introductory turfgrass management to off-campus horticulture students. He received the Certified Professional Agronomist (CPAg) designation in 2013 due to his education, experience, and commitment to the field of turfgrass management.
