2018/2019 Board of Directors Biographies May 18, 2018 Jody Lavoie, Chair Jody Lavoie was elected Chair of RECO’s Board of Directors in May 2018. Jody previously served as Chair from June 2015 to June 2016. He was first elected to RECO’s Board of Directors in 2010 and was elected by the Board to serve as Vice- Chair in 2011. He has served as a member of all of RECO’s committee, in addition to serving as chair of the Audit & Risk, Director Development, and Finance Committees. Jody has also served on the Registrar’s Education Advisory Committee since 2011. Jody began his career as a real estate salesperson in 2005, becoming a Broker in 2008. He has extensive knowledge of construction and renovation practices and donates his time to Habitat for Humanity and Renovation Challenge projects. Jody is an active member of the Ottawa Real Estate Board, serving for three years on both the MLS and arbitration committees. He has been awarded various sales achievement and philanthropic awards throughout his career, including the Royal LePage Award of Excellence, the highest award in recognition of long-term achievement. Jody’s father, David Lavoie, began selling real estate in Ottawa in 1972, and the family has had a strong presence in the area for more than 40 years. Bill Yetman, Vice-Chair Bill Yetman was elected Vice-Chair of RECO’s Board of Directors in May 2018. Bill previously served as Vice-Chair from June 2015 to June 2016. Bill joined RECO’s Board of Directors as a government appointee in January 2011. He has served on various RECO committees, in addition to serving as chair of the Audit & Risk, Finance and Governance Committees. He owns and operates his own consulting firm, Yetman Consulting/Able Management Solutions Inc., where he provides expertise in executive support, strategic planning, event management, partnership development and operational planning to Canada’s not-for-profit sector. He has broad experience in many types and sizes of not-for-profit organizations, including health, regulatory agencies, foundations, and associations. Prior to opening his own business, Bill held senior management positions at the Retail Council of Canada. He has also been a senior political advisor to cabinet ministers in both the federal government and the provincial governments of Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Community Care Access Centre – Toronto Central and as trustee of the Boys and Girls Club of Canada Foundation.
Michael Appleton Michael Appleton was first elected to RECO’s Board of Directors in 2012 and has served as a member of the Director Development, Finance, Governance and Insurance Committees, in addition to serving as chair of the Audit & Risk Committee. He has distinguished himself as the top real estate trainer across Canada with three major real estate corporations. His list of clientèle reads like a Who's Who of real estate, including: Royal LePage, Re/Max, HomeLife, Century 21, Coldwell Banker and the Toronto Real Estate Board. Michael has empowered thousands of realtors across the country for the last twenty years. The author of Dialogues To Success, he is the only person in the history of Canadian real estate to win the Real Estate Institute of Canada's Morguard Literary Award for four years (2000, 2001, 2004 & 2005). In his spare time Michael enjoys creative writing, film studies and theatre. Ashwani Bhardwaj Ashwani Bhardwaj joined RECO’s Board of Directors as a government appointee in August 2013 and has served on various RECO committees, in addition to serving as chair of the Legislation and Regulations and Insurance Committees. He holds a Master's degree in English Literature and a law degree from India. In 1987, he started a professional real estate support services firm which focuses on providing services to the real estate law firms in the field of title searching and closings in residential and commercial real estate. He is a member of the Hindu Cultural Society and was recently inducted as a member of the Scarborough Bluffs Rotary Club. Ashwani is also a member of the Community Advisory Board for the Rouge Valley Health System, serving the community at large. Steve Boxma Steve Boxma was first elected to RECO’s Board of Directors in 2014 and has served as a member of the Audit & Risk, Finance and Governance Committees in addition to being chair of the Insurance Committee. Steve also served on the Registrar’s Education Advisory Committee. Steve has been a member of the Ottawa Real Estate Board since 2004, and has been a registered broker since 2008. He is currently a broker for Royal LePage Team Realty Inc., Brokerage in Ottawa. Steve believes that having a strong sense of community makes for a better place to live. He is very active in his brokerage’s charitable foundation and is involved with his branch’s community relations committee. Page 2 of 5
Glenda Brindle Glenda Brindle was first elected to RECO’s Board of Directors in 2006 and completed three consecutive terms. During that time, Glenda served as Chair of the Board of Directors for three years. She also served as a member of various committees, in addition to being chair of the Governance and Insurance Committees. Glenda became registered 30 years ago (1988). In 2005, became a broker and then became a manager for Royal LePage Team Realty, Brokerage. Glenda has been an award winning REALTOR® and received the life time Award of Excellence from Royal LePage. In 1998, she was called to the Ottawa Real Estate Board (OREB) as a committee member and from there became President of OREB in 2004. Glenda then went on to serve on committees and task forces with the Canadian Real Estate Association and Ontario Real Estate Association. She currently sits on a committee for St. Joe’s Women’s Day Shelter in Ottawa, helping to raise funds and organize fund raisers. In 2017, Glenda was appointed by the Minister of Government and Consumer Services as a Director of the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. Frank Dattilo Frank Dattilo was elected to RECO’s Board of Directors in 2018. Frank graduated from University of Windsor in 1972, got his Real Estate registration in 1973, and his Broker’s registration in 1977. He also took the General Insurance program in 1981. During his career he wore many hats; taught at St Clair College for 15 years, ran various construction and development companies: Monsada, Soncorp, Hamilton One Jarvis, and Oscar Construction. He launched three real estate companies; Rosewind Realty, RE/MAX Signature Realty, and now Dattilo Realty. His personal achievements include: CIBPA - Canadian Italian Business & Professional Association Royal College of Dental Surgeons - Discipline & Education Committees Fulton Shean Charitable Foundation - Chairman (USA) Detroit College of Law- International Journal Now semi-retired and looks to being on the Board of RECO as a new challenge where he can contribute his expertise. Bettianne Hedges Bettianne Hedges was first elected to RECO’s Board of Directors in June 2017 and has served as a member of the Finance and Registrar’s Education Advisory Committees. Bettianne holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Administration. She has been a registered real estate professional since 2005 and is a broker. She has worked in brokerage management, as an industry trainer, as well as providing full service to clients throughout Ontario. Bettianne has been very active in organizing and promoting events and training for real estate professionals throughout the province. She is the former Chair of the Ontario Trillium Foundation - Thames Valley, has served with the United Way and many municipal level boards. She is currently a docent with the Burlington Arts Centre. Lucy Impera Lucy Impera joined RECO’s Board of Directors as a government appointee in April 2017 and has served as a member of the Audit & Risk, Director Development and Governance Committees. Lucy is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and has extensive experience in regulatory law, the requirements of Administrative Authorities, adjudication and business administration. She currently owns and operates her own consulting firm, Pera-Dia International Inc., providing assistance in strategic and business planning, business start-up and policy development in both private and not-for-profit organizations. Prior to consulting, Lucy was with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) for 13 years. For 12 of those years, she worked in the Regulatory Affairs department, where she was directly involved with the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, collaborating regularly with the Policy and Sector and Liaison staff. Lucy held the position of the Registrar, Licensing and Certification at the ESA where she was responsible for the administration and operations of the licensing line of business. While at ESA, Lucy was a member of the Society of Energy Professional’s Grievance Appeal Panel, a member of the Electrical Contractor Registration Agency and Secretary to the ESA’s Industry Advisory Council. During a secondment from the ESA to the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority, Lucy held the position of Director of Licensing, where she led the business start-up related to the establishment of the licensing policies and procedures. William (Bill) Johnston Bill Johnston was first elected to RECO’s Board of Directors in June 2017 and has served as a member of the Finance and Registrar’s Education Advisory Committees. Bill is a broker and a lawyer, having been called to the Ontario Bar in 1982. Bill has been involved in the real estate brokerage business since the fall of 1982 and currently is employed as manager and legal counsel with Bosley Real Estate in Toronto. Bill is a former director of the Toronto Real Estate Board, and served as its president in 2010-2011. He is also a former director of the Canadian Real Estate Association (2012-2016). Bill is a two-time Morguard Literary Award winner, and has written 12 courses on issues relevant to real estate professionals. Bill is a director of Skylark Children, Youth & Families (formerly Delisle Youth Services), and is the proud father of three children. Tony Ma Tony Ma was first elected to RECO’s Board of Directors in June 2016 and has served as a member of the Audit & Risk, Director Development and Insurance Committees. He has been registered since June 2000 and became a broker in 2002. In June 2004, he opened his own brokerage and focused on agent training, brokerage management, and new home/condo project sales. His brokerage has been growing steadily for the past 12 years, serving many communities in the GTA. Tony is actively involved in with the Chinese community and is currently an active member of CREPSO (Chinese Real Estate Professional Society of Ontario) and CCRPA (Canada-China Realty Professional Association). He has also served on two committees of the Toronto Real Estate Board and was a Commercial Counsel member from 2009-2011. Page 5 of 5
