Packing List • A sleeping bag, single bed sheet, pillow • 2 towels • Soap, comb/brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. Bring clothes that can be layered as weather can vary • Several pairs of pants, underwear and 1+ pair of socks per day • 1 pair of shorts during warm weather • 1 shirt per day • 1+ sweater/fleece (layers) • Warm coat, gloves and hat (evenings can get cold) • One pair of shoes that can get wet • One pair of sandals/slippers/Crocs for wearing in the cabins Please • One pair of comfortable sturdy shoes or boots for hiking label • Notebook and pencils (journal) everything!! • One day pack. (Student will carry with them paper/pencil, extra socks, jacket, rain gear, water, snack/lunch etc.) • Two water bottles with tight fitting lids Optional: bathing suit (for showering), camera, stationery & stamps, magnifying glass, compass, flashlight
How to Pack Students will not have access to luggage under the bus until our arrival at Tremont Friday morning. Please make sure that all items they need for the night on the bus and the morning hike are packed in their backpack. Information About Student Medication If your child will require any prescription or over the counter medication during the trip, it will be administered by the trip nurse in accordance with Rockwood’s Medication policy. • Per district policy, the nurse has permission to administer the following medications WITHOUT a doctor’s note: acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil), antacid (Tums), Benadryl and Zyrtec. The nurse has a supply of these medications which can be administered if needed. PLEASE DO NOT SEND THESE MEDICATIONS. • All other medication will need a doctor’s order (OTC) or prescription label attached, along with a parent’s signature on the Request for Medication to be Given at School form. • Place all medication in a Ziploc bag marked with your child’s name and give to the nurse at check-in. • Send only enough medication for the days your child will be gone. • If your child requires an asthma rescue inhaler, please send two, if possible. Your child will carry one with them and the nurse will keep the second as backup. If only one inhaler is supplied, it will remain with your child for the entire trip. • If your child has ever gotten motion sickness please consider having your doctor prescribe medication (ex. Dramamine) for the bus ride.
Return of Student Medication • Empty bottles will be placed in your child’s bag prior to arrival back at the Annex. • The nurse will be stationed inside the Annex on Monday afternoon during arrival to return other medications. • Any medications not picked up on Monday will be returned to your child’s school and will need to be picked up by a parent.
Name Tags • Name tags will be picked up at check-in. • Students must wear their name tags at all times during the trip. • Each student’s name tag lists their bus number, letter group and activity group (R2/white). • Bus assignments are made prior to trip departure. Care is taken to keep students together with others from their school and gender when possible. • Groups assignments encourage students to meet new friends as they share their trip experience with new and familiar students.

The Bus Ride After you check in: grab your luggage, head out to the buses, find your bus captain and load your luggage. Don’t forget to wave goodbye as you load the bus and find a seat! When the bus departs: • Students will be introduced to their driver and the rules of the road. Then, a movie will be loaded into the onboard video system. • 1.5 hours later: We will stop at a rest stop in Mount Vernon, IL where we will change drivers and everyone will use the bathroom. (A bathroom is also available on the bus.) • Snack choice: Trek and Travel supplies several snacks along the road at designated times. Students are invited to bring additional snacks in a Ziploc bag with their name on it. It will be collected at Tremont as required by their policies. • When the movies are finished, it’s time for lights out (electronics away) so everyone can get some sleep. • Rest stops are visited as needed throughout the night. • Around 6 am we will stop at the Knoxville airport to pick up our emergency vehicle. • Around 7 am we will arrive at Look Rock Tower for breakfast and our morning hike! • We will arrive at Tremont Institute around 11 am. Electronics will be collected and locked on the bus at this time. Students will choose their bunks, unpack and head to lunch! • Twitter will be utilized to update our location until lights out and then again in the morning when possible (due to available time and cell service limitations.)
Electronics Policy The time at Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont is focused on providing students with a new and rare experience. They are encouraged to disconnect from the technological world and interact with each other and the natural world in a direct manner, face to face. This time also allows them the opportunity to build new friendships, learn about their surroundings through hands on experience and quietly reflect. • Students are invited to bring electronics on the bus for entertainment during the ride. This includes items such as iPods/mp3 players/Kindles/Nooks/e-readers, battery operated hand held game consoles, etc. • We will collect these items upon arrival to Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont and place them in Ziploc bags with each student’s name on the bag. • Students who wish to take pictures during the trip are encouraged to bring either a digital or disposable camera. Students will not be allowed to keep their phones and use them as a camera. • Please label your camera!!!!! • Students are encouraged to being magazines, books and a journal as they will have quiet time before bed to read and unwind.

Meal/Snack Information All meals and snacks are provided for students as part of the trip fee. This includes their time at Tremont and during travel to/from. Students are able to bring additional snacks on the bus, but please limit these to a one gallon Ziploc bag. At McDonalds students will be able to choose two of the following: McDouble McChicken Side Salad Small Fries Fruit ‘n Yogurt Parfait The meal order is called in before arrival. The food will be delivered to each bus. Students will not go inside of McDonalds. They will be able to buy a drink at the rest stop or they can choose from one of the provided drink flavor packets for their water bottle to accompany their meal.
Important Information Will my child need money? Gift Shop at Tremont: Each student will have a chance to visit the gift shop at Tremont Institute. We suggest sending a maximum of $50 in cash or on a pre-paid card. Check out their online store to get an idea of merchandise and their prices. (Disposable cameras start at $6.50/each and your child will finish the first one before they step off the bus!) Rest Stops: At some rest stops, students will be given an opportunity to purchase drinks at their own expense. Sick Policy Children who are unable to attend school the day of the trip due to illness will not be eligible to attend the trip. If this occurs, we will work with you regarding possible options, which could include having your child attend a different trip date or refunding part of the trip fee. Twitter and Facebook • Twitter is our main form of communication while traveling and during our time at Tremont. • Everything we Tweet will show up in real time on Facebook and on our website. • Twitter feed: @PRTrekNTravel • Website: www.prcommunityed.org/bableroec/trektravel • Facebook: BablerOutdoorEducationCenter • We will Tweet as often as time and phone service reception allow while traveling to keep you up to date on our location. On Monday, we will use Twitter to communicate our estimated time of arrival (ETA) back at the Annex. • Tweeting is limited to connectivity and during our time in the Smoky Mountains National Park as there is no cell phone service. At Tremont, we rely solely on a Wi-Fi connection available at the central building. • The best time for us to Tweet is right after meal times as students head to activities with their groups. • Remember your child’s group name (letter + number, ex. A2 or E1) and the name of their chaperone because this is how their groups will be identified on the Tweets. • We will try to post a few pictures each day, however that is not always possible. • Trek and Travel cameras will be taken to activities with groups and pictures from the trip will start being added to our Facebook page starting Saturday A.M.
Monday Return • We expect the trip to return at approximately 5 pm. We will communicate via Twitter to give an ETA throughout the day. Due to weather, traffic and unforeseen circumstances, these times may change and vary between 4 pm - 6 pm. • Sign out: Parent Pick-up at Trip Return - When you arrive on Monday to pick your child up, we will have a designated parent pick up line for each bus. You will be required to sign your child out before they are released off the bus. • Reminder - the nurse will be stationed inside the Annex on Monday afternoon during arrival to return medications.
