INTRODUCTION Welcome to Sardinia & Sardinian Places In some ways, Sardinia represents a simple prospect: a beautiful Mediterranean island, fringed with beaches and turquoise seas – a simple destination to promote, then? Our feeling has always been that the island is more varied than this; and as destination experts we like to think we know the island like no one else, and can advise which area might suit you best. The three main resort areas are strikingly different. The Costa Smeralda is all dramatic granite outcrops, high glamour and dazzling beaches – a yachting paradise, playground of the rich and famous. Alghero, surrounded by lush green countryside and great beaches, has a lovely atmosphere with exquisite Catalan architecture and an amazing array of restaurants. The southern part of the island is also renowned for its beaches and rightly so. It also affords access to the mountains and the ancient culture which is the true heart of the island. So how do you decide? Well, that’s where we come in. INTRODUCTION Benvenuti in Sardegna With over 1800km of coastline and a situation equidistant between Italy and Tunisia, Sardinia is set in the heart of the Mediterranean and has flavours to match – it is an island that boasts a fiercely independent character whilst remaining indisputably Italian. The second largest island in the Mediterranean and Sardinia is not only known for its unspoilt beauty and just 11km from Corsica, the beautiful island of Sardinia position but also for its history, with Neolithic sites and has many faces. From sleek yachts and beaches of the traces of many invaders that mark the island’s turbulent Costa Smeralda, to the beauty of the mountainous past. Over the years, Sardinia’s shores have seen the interior, it is a popular destination for those who love arrival of Phoenicians, Romans, Genoans battling for water sports and beach life as well as those looking to supremacy with Pisans and Arabs, the Spanish, and explore the more uncommercialised parts of the island. finally the House of Savoy. The different cultures have all contributed to the art, architecture and cultural life of Sardinia’s picture-book coastline, with its white sandy Sardinia and evidence is scattered throughout the island: beaches and crystal clear emerald water, is some prehistoric dwellings and fortresses from the earliest of the best the Mediterranean has to offer. Sun, beaches and stunning coastal scenery make for the perfect holiday destination – and Sardinia has it in spades. First take in the views. The craggy coastline is simply fabulous, the rocks set off against the incredible clear emerald and blue sea. Then there are the beaches. For a rocky island the seemingly limitless white and golden sand comes as a surprise. The southern corner with its long sweeping bays are a magnate for tourists and locals alike, but for those wanting to escape the masses there are also intimate inlets, some accessible by car, some by foot and others only by boat. If you don’t want to just sit in the sun all day the island has a remarkable history worth delving into, and of course restaurants and very acceptable local wine to test. INTRODUCTION Southern Sardinia Pula The long sandy coastline of Santa Margherita di Pula and the majestic Sulcis mountain range are examples of the varied landscapes this charming town has to offer. By night the central square is bustling with locals and visitors enjoying the warm summer evenings in one of the cafés or restaurants. The nearby coast at Nora offers one of the best examples in Sardinia of an ancient Roman provincial city with temples, baths and well-preserved black, white and ochre mosaic floors, San Pantaleo, North East which still evoke their former glory in their stunning seaside setting. Chia and the Costa del Sud The dazzling white sand dunes of Chia and the small islands, set in transparent sea in a kaleidoscope of green and blues make this stretch of coast one of the prettiest drives on the island. Better still, you virtually have the road to yourself to admire these breathtaking views. Villasimius Villasimius is a small town that comes alive during the summer months catering for a large number of daily visitors coming in from the surrounding villages and residences. The town provides a friendly and lively holiday base, with plenty of restaurants and bars, its streets thronged with families for the traditional evening stroll. As is the case of most “coastal” towns, Villasimius is about 2km inland. This whole area is blessed with some outstandingly beautiful long sandy beaches and crystal clear seas which are almost tropical in their brilliance. Scoglio Peppino, Southern Sardinia Solanas and Porto Sa Ruxi Popular with families, and beach lovers, Solanas is a beautiful residential town with the longest stretch of fine sandy beach on the south east coast. Porto Sa Ruxi is further up the road, another residential site nestling in the hills on a promontory washed on both sides by the sea. Here you can literally step from your rented villa down a few steps to the beach. Central Sardinia If you prefer to immerse yourself in the real Sardinia, the huge province of Nuoro is probably your best bet. Embracing mountains, lakes and isolated villages, the region has retained its oldest customs and you will often see locals wearing typical costumes or working in a craft shop trying to keep up the traditions. If you are looking for secluded and unspoilt beaches, then look no further! The western and eastern coasts boast some magnificent coves backed by steep limestone cliffs and are only reachable by boat or on foot. Sardinia is by tradition a largely shepherd country, and this is reflected in its cuisine. Staples are grilled or spit roasted meat, cheeses, breads, salamis and olives. Flavours are simple, intense and natural. You will find few rich sauces or spices as the local produce is rich and tasty in itself, so there really is little need for embellishment other than olive oil and local herbs. Perhaps the most typical Sardinian dish is roast suckling pig which can be found at the many agriturismi dotted around the island. These farm-based restaurants are well worth a visit for a genuine taste of Sardinian food and hospitality. Local wines are often excellent and very good value. Each area has its own speciality like the Sella e Mosca from Alghero, the sweet Malvasia from Bosa, the crisp white Vermentino from the Gallura or the strong, ruby red Nepente from Oliena. Local red wines are rich, strong and full-bodied and marry well with roast meats, game and mature cheeses whilst the local whites are dry and tangy, served very cold with fish and cheese dishes. Wonderful holiday. We loved Sardinia and its people. Mrs Kimmit, Guest Shopping There is a wealth of local arts and crafts on sale in towns and villages, in specialist shops or on doorsteps. Hand made goods still form an important part of the local economy and local crafts to look out for include gold and coral jewellery, basketry, ceramics and textiles. Regional specialities such as pecorino cheese, salted mullet roe, sweets, local honey, wine, myrtle and lemon liqueurs can be found in main supermarkets as well as delicatessens and specialist shops, or directly from the producers. Step into the bigger towns and you can almost guarantee some kind of market (mercato civile) is taking place. The bustling markets serve a plethora of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, meat and other Sardinian specialities. Even if you don’t intend to buy anything, it is still worth a visit and is a great way to experience the local atmosphere. Alghero, North West Call the Sardinian experts on 0845 330 2056 9
