19 th Conference of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology Integrative oncology – Leaving no one behind Strengthening the health care workforce for older people living with cancer WELCOME ADDRESS Dear Colleagues, As the President of SIOG and Chair of the Scientific Committee of the SIOG Annual Conference this year, I take great pride in welcoming all the attendees of the 19th Conference of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology / SIOG 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland on November 14-16, 2019. The SIOG 2019 Annual Conference will be a premier event combining a one-day IFA/SIOG Summit 2019 – Global Policy Dialogue on Cancer in the Ageing Population to be held at the United Nations Venue on Thursday, November 14, 2019 followed by a two-day SIOG 2019 Scientific Programme at the prestigious International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG) on Friday and Saturday, November 15-16, 2019. For this edition of our conference, the science of our discussions and meetings will revolve around the theme of integrative oncology – leaving no one behind. The meeting will provide several types of educational lectures including multidisciplinary lectures around specific tumor types discussing concrete cases backed up by solid scientific background. Oral abstract sessions and poster discussions will be designed to follow three major tracks: • Solid and hematologic malignancies • Geriatric assessment and supportive care • Modern diagnostics and therapeutics SIOG is the front runner in channelling the knowledge and skills of health professionals to help determine the top priorities and actions in clinical settings for advancing the effectiveness of including geriatric protocols in the treatment and care of our older cancer patients. Continuing the success of previous SIOG Annual Conferences, this 19th edition will once again bring together leading experts, professionals and academics from around the world to exchange knowledge, experience, and insights around cancer in ageing across diverse clinical settings and industries. The conference will feature speakers from among the world’s leading experts in this field, for advancing the understanding and the practice of this multidisciplinary approach. The SIOG Annual Conference is returning to Geneva, its home, just before SIOG’s 20th Anniversary! Embedded between the nearby Alpine peaks and the hilly terrain of the Jura, the French-speaking city of Geneva lies in the bay where the Rhone leaves Lake Geneva. With its humanitarian tradition and cosmopolitan flair, the European seat of the United Nations and headquarters of the Red Cross, Geneva is known as the «capital of peace». We welcome you in Switzerland and hope you will find the conference and your stay in Geneva both valuable and enjoyable. Prof. Hans Wildiers President International Society of Geriatric Oncology 5
19 th Conference of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology Integrative oncology – Leaving no one behind Strengthening the health care workforce for older people living with cancer ABOUT SIOG Who we are Treatment of cancer in older adults is complex and an ever-growing global challenge for healthcare professionals. Comorbidities, potentially altered treatment tolerance, and variable patient preferences are some of the key issues that affect caring for older people with cancer. The best approach for treating cancer in the elderly has never been more pressing in a context where the ageing population continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. The International Society of Geriatric Oncology, also known as Societé Internationale d’Oncologie Geriatrique in French, (SIOG), was founded in 2000 and was officially registered as a not-for-profit organisation under the Swiss law in October 2012. SIOG is a multidisciplinary society, including physicians in the fields of oncology and geriatrics, and allied health professionals and has over 1.700 members in more than 80 countries around the world. The SIOG network represents over 110.000 patients older than 65 years. SIOG is the leading force in channelling the knowledge and foresights of professionals to help determine the top priorities and actions to enhance the effectiveness of including geriatric protocols in the treatment and care of cancers of the elderly patients. The founding members comprised of Paul Calabresi, Matti Aapro, Lazzaro Repetto, Martine Extermann, John Bennett, Riccardo Audisio, Lodovico Balducci and Silvio Monfardini. Our mission and vision Challenge: Major risk factor for cancer is age, and with the ageing of the world population, a major epidemiologic challenge is ahead of us. Our goal: To foster the development of health professionals in the field of geriatric oncology, in order to optimise treatment of older adults with cancer. SIOG promotes efforts through three strategic channels: Education, Clinical practice and Research. These are addressed through the following goals and tools: 1. EDUCATION Goals Tools • Journal of Geriatric Oncology (JGO) Dissemination of knowledge to maintain a common standard of quality healthcare in older cancer patients • SIOG Annual Conference • SIOG Regional Forums (APAC, LATAM, USA, etc.) Integrate geriatric oncology in the curricula of medical and nursing • SIOG Annual Geriatric Oncology Advanced Course education to ensure a contextualised and high standard of qualification for • SIOG Education online e-learning modules healthcare professionals • Educational Geriatric Oncology Books (in collaboration with ESMO; Education Resources: SIOG-ASCO) Address the shortage of specialised oncologists/geriatricians & allied • Close collaboration with cancer educational organisations health professionals in geriatric oncology (ASCO, ESMO, ECCO, MASCC, SABCS, ASH, EUGMS, EONS, Europa Donna, Europa Uomo, IAGG) Successful global advocacy through support to country initiatives for • SIOG Guidelines: Expert recommendations & guidelines health workforce development and inclusion of NCDs in the UN 2030 published in international scientific journals (Lancet Agenda Oncology, Annals of Oncology, JCO etc.) 2. CLINICAL PRACTICE Goals Tools Integrate geriatric evaluation (including comorbidities) into oncology decision-making and guidelines • Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment • SIOG Clinical Guidelines* Improve the quality of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of older patients with malignancies • SIOG Task Forces active in various fields of geriatric oncology to produce position papers, consensus statements or clinical Address issues of access to care, including the needs of the caregiver practice guidelines* *Full list of SIOG Guidelines on www.siog.org Develop interdisciplinary geriatric oncology clinics 6
