EDITOR’S OFFICE The need for slow living Growing up, I remember seeing my immaculately dressed grandfather return after a full day’s work just before sundown. He’d take off his cufflinks, roll back his sleeves, loosen his tie, all of the while talking to all of us in the family about how our day was, what we’d learnt and achieved, and what our plans were for the next day. If he were still around and working today, I doubt he would have managed to work from home, even for a day. Not because he wasn’t dedicated, diligent or meticulous but because, for him, dressing up for the job was as important as the space in which he worked and the work he produced. However, as a generation, we seem to have adapted so quickly to the change. designer extraordinaire Kunaal Kyhaan Seolekar This m a ke s m e ve r y h o p ef ul — b e c a use o ur and arboreal illustrations by Nirupa Rao. AGENDA / NEWS LIVINGETC / PROMOTION One to Watch GUNJAN GUPTA The founder of It’s All About Home (IAAH) is a firm believer in the simple pleasures of life, lifestyle and comfort. She says, “We believe in creating comfy homes; we design spaces and furniture that makes you feel better.” Gunjan lives by three mantras in life: ”new ideas, a new mindset and the acceptance to change.” Her primary aim is to bridge the gap between high-end and bespoke furniture for Indian consumers. She adds, “Our styling solutions include everything you’d need at home—from furniture to furnishings, lighting to decor, wall art to floor coverings.” Gunjan identified a gap in the availability of modern and rustic finished pieces, which gave rise to her desire to create a one-stop, bespoke solution for decor products. “Now, we offer free in-house design services, work with several international and Indian designers, and also support women and naive artisans of Moradabad.” As Gunjan looks forward to a new era in design, her plans entail the opening of a brand new store in New Delhi and expanding to other metros across the country. It’s her unwavering commitment that makes us big fans of her grit and determination. iaah.com Woody essence Forward-thinking, technology-driven innovative design Organic personifies AXOR One. HOMES / ETC HOMES / ETC T his high-rise apartment in Mumbai has been imagined as a timeless and comfortable home that embodies the tenets of the Danish concept of hygge. Designed by architects Shobhan Kothari and Anand Menon of KDND Studio, this home is envisioned as a testament to ‘slow living’. The duo’s practiced eye for textures and colours and their impact on the spirit of a home has led to a material palette that exudes a mood of warm conviviality. One of the most defining characteristics is the abundant natural light that streams in through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. This profusion of light has led to the creation of statement walls in a natural textured grey tone for an uber modern vibe. ‘Cosy comfort’ outlined the brief given by the homeowners. So, through a cohesive approach, Shobhan and Anand have delved deep into understanding the design elements of hygge. The resulting decor, therefore, includes the grey micro-concrete walls interspersed with fluted wooden wall cladding, wooden floors and modern M A IN BATHROOM furniture that’s custom-made on site. Some examples include the wood treated with the Japanese charring method of shou sugi ban, fluted panelling to create textured depth and the use of an exotic blue marble top from Brazil. Plus, hints of layering across the abode create a sense of depth while offering an ambience that’s perfect for relaxation. Achieving a sense of timelessness while also personalising design details was paramount as, Shobhan explains, “We planned the home to be a space where new memories are created while embracing old ones.” This is obvious in the creative duo’s plan for the main ensuite bathroom, which is an ode to modern New York style, something the homeowners love. Meanwhile, the kids’ wardrobes feature a crossword with words that have been chosen by the children themselves. This is the hybrid language of design that truly sets this home apart as a chic and nuanced residence. 42 I Livingetc July 2021 July 2021 Livingetc I 43

Three days later (and surgery-free!) it was hers. The Shutter House, as it’s christened, saw the collaboration of architecture and interior design studio State of Kin and luxury stockist Mobilia, known to offer furniture, lighting and accessories from several eminent brands. The feature that gives the structure its name, and which makes it a landmark in the area, is the mechanical, linear, timber-clad shutters that rise and fall to both shield inhabitants from the blazing Australian sun and create privacy. Shutters up, and views of the adjacent lake flood in; shutters down, and film noir-style striped shadows scatter across the interior. While the exterior makes a strong statement, it’s what’s inside that gives the home real clout. Although the backdrop is neutral—white walls, stained oak parquetry floors, concrete ceilings—the house is an explosion of colour. Shapely furniture, impactful rugs and expressive artwork play key roles, injecting excitement and playfulness into every room and wryly juxtaposing more refined features. Consider the monolithic sculptural kitchen island, which is a hunk of Bianco Chiavara granite that’s given delicate timber detailing. State Of Kin’s whimsical touch is seen throughout, from the circular elements in and around the pool to the rich orange grout in the bath and the iridescent home profile accents. Sharlene previously lived less than five minutes away. “I’d watched the house being built but when I walked in, I was speechless.
