WELCOME TO DAY 2 OF LONGINES IRISH CHAMPIONS WEEKEND I extend a warm welcome to everyone watching in for the second day of Longines Irish Champions Weekend at the Curragh this afternoon. While the very best of racing is taking place this weekend, a vital ingredient is missing, one that makes a day’s racing in Ireland such a special occasion. The absence of owners, racecourse members, sponsors and racegoers alike has been keenly felt since racing resumed after a 10-week break in early June. This is particularly the case on big and important racing occasions such as Longines Irish Champions Weekend. It is truly disheartening that we will be running four Group 1 races, including the final Classic of the season, in front of an empty stand this afternoon. However that is what we must do in the current circumstances and many other sectors are suffering just as much, if not more. Since June 8th, every race meeting in Ireland has been run behind-closed- doors, meaning that only those working at a fixture may attend. We have implemented detailed safety procedures which have been well adhered to by trainers, riders, officials and stable staff. It is important that those in attendance at Irish race meetings keep following the protocols in place as they are the basis on which we are permitted to race. When the time is right and restrictions on gatherings of people at an outdoor event begin to ease, owners will be our first priority for a return to the racecourse. It will mean so much to get owners back to the racecourse to watch their horses compete. We are conscious too of a great number of people within our industry that have lost work over the past months in particular bookmakers, Tote staff, caterers and a multitude of other racecourse service providers. I look forward to the day that each and every one of you are back on the racecourse, contributing once again to an industry that we can be proud of. Finally, I would just like to sympathise with all families who have lost loved ones in this awful Pandemic and salute the medical staff and frontline workers who have worked selflessly and heroically so that the rest of the population may be safe and well. Míle Buíochas. Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive, Horse Racing Ireland ” 2

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 9

CURRAGH COMMENT Romantic Proposal collared Gulliver on the line to take the Scurry spoils here and although she was a couple of places behind Downforce when fourth in Listed company subsequently, she is 9lb better off. Half Nutz is progressing well, while Treacherous spearheads the British challenge, but BARANIYA probably has the most potential. Dermot Weld’s filly handled the rise to Listed level when third over 7f at Naas and is fancied to improve again from the drop to a sprint. WIN: BARANIYA DANGER: ROMANTIC PROPOSAL IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR The Bold Lad always holds form very well, and the race we witnessed last year was no different. Ger Lyons’ Buffer Zone came out on top under a fine ride by Colin Keane, with subsequent multiple Listed winner and big improver Make A Challenge a length and three quarters back in second. The form gains a further strong look through the UK raider Gulliver, who was back in third, with the legendary Gordon Lord Byron, sadly no longer with us, and Curragh regular Blairmayne back in fourth and fifth respectively. Buffer Zone went to Ayr for the Gold Cup following this race last year but couldn’t get involved, however he’s shown his class with fine performances in Listed and Group races since the resumption of racing, notably beaten only half a length into third in the Group 2 Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes. The logo indicates that runners sold at Goffs Sales BOLD LAD The first race today honours the great Bold Lad. Trained by Paddy Prendergast, Bold Lad began his career in 1966 by winning the Youngsters Stakes in Ireland and was then sent to Royal Ascot to contest the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in which he defeated a field which included Royal Palace. He won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster defeating the previously unbeaten Ribocco, after which Prendergast described him as the best two-year-old he had ever trained, including Windy City. In September he won the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket. In the Free Handicap, a ranking of the season’s best juveniles, he was rated three pounds clear of runner-up Royal Palace giving him Champion honors in Ireland and England. Bold Lad began his three-year-old campaign with a win in the Tetrarch Stakes at The Curragh in Ireland. Sent to England, he was the 100/30 joint-favorite with Royal Palace going in to the Classic 2,000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket. He finished unplaced behind Royal Palace and Taj Dewan, having been denied a clear run in the closing stages. Bold Lad then started favourite for the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury but was beaten three-quarters of a length by the Irish-trained four-year-old Bluerullah. In the last race of his career, ran third to Reform in Ascot’s St. James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Retired to stud at a fee of 400 guineas, Bold Lad made a “spectacular” start to his breeding career, siring the 1000 Guineas winner Waterloo in his first crop of foals. He also sired the leading sprinters Boldboy and Never So Bold, the Richmond Stakes winner Persian Bold (sire of Kooyonga) and Ballad Rock, the sire of Chief Singer. 22

LEGENDS OF THE CURRAGH We live in the era of Aidan O’Brien’s domination, with the master of Ballydoyle continuing his winning streak in Ireland and the UK’s biggest races. His legacy in racing history is secure, so let’s take a look back on some other legends of the Curragh. MORNY WING A British and Irish Champion Flat Jockey, Morny relocated to Ireland after World War I and enjoyed a fine time of things, picking up multiple Championships and riding record numbers of winners in the Classics, records which still stand to this day. Seven wins in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Irish St Leger and six in the Irish Derby highlighted a superb riding career that spanned from 1914 to 1949. PAT EDDERY 11-time British Champion Jockey, Pat was born a stone’s throw from the Curragh, where he rode many a winner for Vincent O’Brien. His association with Sadler’s Wells, Danehill, El Gran Senor and Dancing Brave forms part of his great racing legacy, with the name P. Eddery inscribed on the most historic aspects of thoroughbred history. Pat rode during the golden years of racing, when the likes of Rainbow Quest, El Gran Senor and Sadler’s Wells all clashed, with his ride on Gundry in the 1975 King George VI Stakes famed as one of racing’s biggest spectacles, a race he won on Dancing Brave in 1985, beating Irish Derby winner Shahrastani. VINNIE ROE It takes a special horse to win four Irish St Leger’s, a feat which Vinnie Roe completed in remarkable succession. Trained by Dermot Weld, the star son of Definite Article was a stayer for a generation, winning the Irish St Leger from 2001 to 2004, with Pat Smullen on his back and sporting his easily recognisable sheepskin noseband. A horse who always gave his all and was an ever present for an era, he will be remembered as one of the best stayers to grace the Curragh. 26
MICK KINANE County Tipperary man Mick won the Irish Champion Jockey title on 13 occasions, riding for Dermot Weld, as retained rider to Ballydoyle and latterly for John Oxx. A multiple big race winning ride in the UK too, his finest hour came with his association with the legendary Sea The Stars, on whom he won his third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He rode three winners of the Irish Guineas’, two winners of the Irish Derby and Oaks and landed back-to-back renewals of the Irish St Leger onboard Vintage Crop in 1993 and 1994. An elite jockey, Mick won everything there is to win in racing and his 34-year career will stand the test of time as one of the best jockeys in history. JOHN OXX A multi-generational winning trainer, John trains on the Curragh, making use of the facilities to land many superb Group wins. His training marvel is demonstrated acutely by Sea The Stars, whom he trained to perfection to be one of the stars of recent years. Sinndar landed the Epsom and Irish Derby’s for the great man, with Azamour another fine horse who excelled under Oxx’s watchful eye. His patient, expert handling of top level talent means John will always be regarded as one of the best trainers to grace the world of racing. JOHNNY MURTAGH Johnny was, and still is, a winner. One of the greatest big race jockey, his CV shows that he’s won pretty much every Group 1 on the planet, including all the Irish Classics. Now training in Kildare, Johnny will be remembered for his moments in the saddle onboard Sinndar, Mastercraftsman and Peeping Fawn in Ireland with successes in the UK highlighted by great stayer Yeats, Derby winner High Chapparral and tough filly Soviet Song. Now training, Johnny has wasted no time adapting to the training game, training Ebor winner Mutual Regard and enjoying a phenomenal campaign this season, training Champers Elysees to Listed and Group 3 wins. 27

CURRAGH COMMENT Dermot Weld has won five of the last six renewals of this and relies on Amma Grace and Zawara, who accounted for the Derby third when opening her account at Naas. However, ONE VOICE has performed with credit behind Classic winners Love and Fancy Blue the last twice and could now get her moment in the spotlight. Stablemate Cayenne Pepper is respected dropping back in trip, while Roger Varian’s raider Gold Wand impressed at York and appears to be on the up. Lemista arrives unbeaten in four and has to be taken seriously, with Snow Fairy Stakes winner Thundering Nights and the globetrotting Magic Wand adding further substance to a quality line-up. WIN: ONE VOICE DANGER: MAGIC WAND RACE TWO IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR The simple fact of this race is that Dermot Weld wins it. The legendary trainer made it four consecutive victories in this with the win of Tarnawa last year, ridden beautifully by Chris Hayes. Always prominent, Tarnawa demonstrated her superior class to clear away from the Aidan O’Brien-trained pair of Goddess and Credenza back in second and third. Still a relatively lightly-raced mare, she couldn’t make an impact on British Champions Day but has returned in fine form in her one start this season, winning the Give Thanks at Cork, beating a fine filly of Jessica Harrington’s. She looks a filly on the upgrade for a trainer who excels with these types, and make sure to watch for who Dermot Weld runs in today’s race.
