The initiative, called War-On- Leak programme was recently approved by the City’s Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee. The programme seeks to address the current 32.7 percent water loss in the City. Giving a presentation to the committee, Project Executive from the Water and Sanitation Unit, Ashan Nandlal said youth will be provided CURRENTLY TRAINING AS with on-site training. The youth, he said, will also receive a monthly stipend. He said ARTISANS & PLUMBERS youth will be selected from the 1100 young people currently training as artisans, plumbers and water agents. “We have about 138 young people who are ready for on-site training after undergoing an 18 months theoretical exercise.” Nandlal said the programme also aims to assist with the reduction of non-revenue water loss, which is a growing challenge. “This initiative is very sustainable and will generate additional revenue for the City while also instilling an entrepreneurship mindset within trainees.” He added that youth will be exposed to basic domestic plumbing in low cost housing projects and former R293 houses built before 1994.
