Zack was born into a family of craftsmen and teachers. After graduating from Tsinghua, Zack went on to study to become a designer in tech in the US. Zack moved to Singapore in late 2013 and joined Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Zack Huang NETWORK VISUALIZATION A 3D data visualization and analytics platform that provides in-depth insight into academic collaborations within SUTD, demonstrating SUTD Hologram the impact of multi-disciplinary collaboration over 5 years. CHALLENGE What tools could we build to support the vision of an innovation-driven research ecosystem? How can we demonstrate the growth and impact of a young university? SOLUTION Data from heterogeneous sources is adopted to create the collaboration network in SUTD in a Bipartite Model. Network visualization and analytics are developed to measure the influence of multi-disciplinary collaboration and academic impact. IMPACT Stats and visuals produced by this project have been used as evidence of SUTD’s value to government bodies and external reviewers. The project was proposed to Ministry of Education (MOE) to influence research ecosystem nationwide. ROLES Work closely with SUTD-MIT IDC, SUTD OR, SUTD HR under SUTD Associate Provost Prof. Martin Dunn. Data curation with Excel and Python. Analysis with NetworkX. Visualization with Gephi and Rhino. Zack Huang DESIGN THINKING TOOLS A competitive-collaborative board game to help aspiring designers solving real-world problems. It includes 54 hand-drawn cards each Something Someone inspired by a famous design thinking method. Zack Huang SYSTEM ENGINEERING A 3D printed generative art designed as a token of appreciation for a world renowned professor, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board SUTD Cube of SUTD-MIT International Design Centre. CHALLENGE Show the scientific frontier of digital design and manufacturing with strong SUTD identity in minimalistic form. SOLUTION A single line travels in space linking six SUTD logos with an optimized path. It represents a classic NP-hard problem in Operations Research. Advanced FEM and a new soluble 3D printing support material was used to make different variations of the cube. IMPACT Design was used as token or trophy for multiple events including multiple years of SUTD capstone finals, and SUTD-MIT IDC external reviews. The design was used by Stratasys as print samples for their to-be-released new materials and giveaways in 3D printing conferences. ROLES Design with Rhino and Grasshopper, FEM analysis with Solidworks. Production with Stratasys J750, HP Jet Fusion 580, 3DS ProJet MJP 5600, and low-cost FDM printers.
Zack Huang RAPID PROTOTYPING A sculpture modeled upon the logo of SUTD-MIT International Design Centre (IDC). Also known as the Impossible D, created by an Penrose D algorithm that constructs Penrose illusion. CHALLENGE How could we create impossible optical illusions, e.g., the logo of IDC, in real world? How to make life-size models with high precision? SOLUTION An algorithm was created to generate any 3D forced perspective objects from 2D illusions. A papercraft software was used to create the wire frame for large-scale prototyping. font:Gotham-enlarged15% Zack July 18, 2014 IMPACT Exhibit in the Journey to Infinity: Escher’s World of Wonder, created the ames room with same algorithm in the said exhibition at ArtScience Musesum, Singapore, Sept 2016 to Mar 2017. Displayed in SUTD-MIT IDC gallery. ROLES Development of the 2D to 3D algorithm with Grasshopper. Design of the ames room for ArtScience Museum. Design and production of life-size model with Pepakura within one month.
Zack Huang ENGINEERING DESIGN World’s smallest bio-inspired spherical rolling miniature robot made for multi-agent intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) in Virgo an urban environment. CHALLENGE Design of an ISR platform for urban settings at greatly reduced scales and transformative potentials. SOLUTION After 9+ months of development, we came up with a novel mechatronics design that allows the seamless integration of drift-less architecture, COTS controller, communication and sensors. Beyond Virgo, we also built multiple rolling robot platforms, testbeds and lab kits for the future development of this project. IMPACT The 60mm/47g Virgo 1.0 was then the smallest rolling robot in the world in 2015. It was published and presented at multiple robotics conferences. Served as one of the key deliverables of a multimillion-dollar military project. Virgo was awarded Singapore Good Design Mark 2017. ROLES Work closely with Temasek Lab@SUTD with a core team of three under Prof. Kevin Otto for Virgo 1.0. Design, 3D printing, machining, carbon fiber vacuum infusion, part sourcing, assembly and testing.
Zack Huang DESIGN SPRINT A brass ring designed to celebrate the graduation of the first batch of undergraduates at SUTD, honoring the pioneering spirit of joining a Pioneer Ring first-of-its-kind undergraduate program in Singapore. What is a DESIGN SPRINT? DESIGN SPRINT is a design process with a fixed time window of 90 days or less to deliver tangible solutions for critical challenges through iterations of data collection, design research, ideation, system engineering, and prototyping. CHALLENGE Within 90 days, design and deliver of a custom made conversation piece which invokes the exciting story of the first 300 undergraduates’ adventure with a newborn university. SOLUTION With a design of vintage typesetting style, the ring hides a message to the class of 2015 “the forever pioneer & innovator” from Prof. Kristin Wood, one of the four founding Head of Pillars of SUTD. The ring reveals the message if it is press rolled on the skin or a tissue paper with coffee stains. ROLES Work closely with overseas factories, suppliers, and SUTD EPD administrative team. Zack Huang DESIGN SPRINT Named after MAKALU, the 5th highest mountain in the world, a token designed to celebrate Mr. Philip Ng’s work as the founding MAKALU Chairman of SUTD’s Board of Trustees. CHALLENGE 30 days to create a unique token of appreciation to one of the most influential people in the development of SUTD, a pioneer in education. SOLUTION SUTD Students climbed the Seven Summits and named a Himalayan peak “SUTD” with Mr. Ng's support. Coincidentally, MAKALU is the famous origami model named after Himalayan Peaks. We turned MAKALU into a 3D printed joinery puzzle. Each building block of the MAKALU puzzle hides a personal thank-you from the founding senior manage- ment team of SUTD. IMPACT It was received as a symbol of the ethos of SUTD. Mr. Ng jokingly insisted that all his successors should know how to solve this puzzle. Our team was contacted by Singapore MOE to make a token for a state-level foreign affair in a near future. ROLES With a team of five, schedule and lead full design process. Interviews, generative design with Rhino, PolyJet 3D printing, laser engraving and final assembly.
Zack Huang DESIGN SPRINT A toolset designed for all graduates in SUTD Engineering Product Development (EPD), including a business card size multi-tool and EPD Toolset a minimalist thumb drive. CHALLENGE Within 90 days, design and delivery of a commemorative gift which motivates all SUTD EPD graduates to stay sharp and innovative. SOLUTION A multi-tool included ten of the most utilized tools among EPD students, combined with a thin thumb drive that can be press fit into the multi-tool. IMPACT Due to popularity, the toolset was selected as the official EPD graduation gift again one year later. Over 1000 sets were made and distributed. Displayed in SUTD EPD gallery. ROLES Work closely with overseas factories, suppliers, SUTD EPD administrative team, and two student helpers. Design and project management from metal processing, stamping, printing, to assembly and packaging.
Zack Huang DESIGN SPRINT Design and prototype suitable form factors teaching new generation kids to cultivate a sensible saving habit with easy-to-adopt digital Smart Payment payment product-service system. CHALLENGE Within 90 days, deliver user study, design and prototype form factors to speed up a dominant local bank’s pioneering smart payment program that affects all age groups nationwide. SOLUTION After 100+ stakeholders interviewed, 150+ prototypes and extensive study of a previous pilot test, two designs were accepted at the final design review: for 6-7 years olds, a small calculator with coins as buttons. for 8-12 years olds, an ultra-slim NFC shielding sleeve. IMPACT The calculator design was adopted and fully developed to the level of mass production to provide cashless payment and teach children the value of physical money in the same time. The calculator design was awarded Singapore Good Design Mark 2018. ROLES Work closely with SUTD-MIT IDC Design Innovation Team with a core team of five. Zack Huang DESIGN SPRINT A floating brass singing bowl designed as a commemorative token for the guest of honor Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in the grand Levitator opening ceremony of SUTD. CHALLENGE Design and delivery of a symbolic item for the Prime Minister’s Office that celebrates a milestone in Singapore’s Education. SOLUTION A brass singing bowl engraved with the name of the university in roman letter and Chinese, levitated by a novel magnetic array. It represents SUTD as a place where east meets west, technology meets design, tradition meets innovation. IMPACT PM Lee posted about the levitator on his facebook after the ceremony. Two patents were granted for the technology we developed during the process of making the token set. Designated to co-lead another two PM Lee token project for SUTD in 2018. ROLES Work closely with SUTD-MIT IDC Design Innovation Team with a core team of 5 under Prof. Kristin Wood. Design and 5-axis CNC machining of the brass singing bowl. CAD and 3D printing of the floating core.
Zack Huang LEARNING MANAGEMENT Zack's personal learning management and capability visualization platform powered by yEd, color coded by Bloom's Taxonomy of Capability Map learning objectives. Why build a personal learning management platform? To encourage innovative crossover and real learning output by qualify, quantify, and vectorize personal learning experience. CHALLENGE Design of a network-based, flexible, easy to maintain personal learning management system. SOLUTION After six years of development, Zack’s Capability Map is currently running on yEd, a network visualization platform. Its automatic layout algorithm enables quick edits and fast exports.
