Foreword In the coming decades, there will be a growing need for care for the aging society and people with chronic diseases. At the same time, people coping with disabilities strive for autonomy and social participation. These challenges will have impact on costs of our healthcare system. New technologies are becoming more prevalent in health care, enabled by a wide range of sensors and increased connectivity available through the Internet of Things. New technical innovations such as active training devices (robotics, gaming, virtual reality), active assistive devices (prostheses, exoskeletons, orthoses), monitoring and tele rehabilitation will actually improve the person’s abilities to remain independent. Technical improvements in sensors, actuators and artificial intelligence in these devices make them more and more functional when augmenting the human body. The interaction between the adaptive capabilities of a person and the adaptive capacities of the device will define the level of functional capability. The number of medical technologies used in home settings has increased substantially over the last decades. Many of these technologies can be very empowering, allowing older adults to remain in their homes longer, or enabling patients with chronic disease or mild cognitive impairment to both understand their illness better and adopt strategies to improve their quality of life. The mission is targeting High Tech (Pervasive tech, Nano, AI, robotics etc.) in the area of Health, positioned as Smart Aging & Rehabilitation Technologies, and is connected to the RehabWeek in Toronto. The visit to the University of Waterloo and the Toronto 6 Trade mission to Canada / Rehabilitation & Smart Aging
Rehabilitation Institute is a recurring event as part of the establishment of a global healthcare and Med Tech innovation network with the University of Waterloo, Waterloo MedTech and Totonto Rehabilitation Institute. The goal of the mission is to strengthen cooperation between Canada and the Netherlands in High Tech, Life Sciences and Rehabilitation Research and Industry. We highlight the following topics as drivers for our mission: • Integration of technology in Home care (de-hospitalization), Long term care • Novel and revolutionary solutions developed in Rehabilitation and Smart aging. • Big Data to develop novel models of self-care, in an effective, efficient, secure and safe way • Establishment of sound and sustainable public-private partnerships to bring medical technology to the market But most important, we will make friends in Canada to make transatlantic collaborations a success. On behalf of the organization, we wish all participants of this mission a very pleasant, inspiring and successful transatlantic rehab week. Prof. dr. Lisette van Gemert-Pijnen Prof. J.S.
