A WORD FROM CONTENTS LARRY & SHAUN 2 WELCOME Oregon’s Dear Friends & Hazelnut Growers, 3 Growth Our 26th year as a family-owned business, like it was for so many of you, was filled with unprecedented challenges that threatened our livelihoods. Yet, together, we not only World navigated these uncharted waters, but we emerged stronger for the challenges we 4 Markets faced. By adapting quickly to the many changes forced upon us by the worldwide pandemic, GPC/NWH have produced a record $16.67 million combined profit share Growing for our hazelnut growers. 5 Calendar With your support, our focus and mission remain the same today as when Shaun and I started our company: to increase our growers’ profitability and treat them the way we Hazelnut wish our parents had been treated by their processor. Today, we continue to invest in 6-7 Varieties our communities and are leading the way in promoting hazelnuts in both national and international markets. New Planting 8 Information The pandemic has affected some segments of the Oregon hazelnut market, including food service and the China inshell market. However, our efforts to build strong market relationships elsewhere, coupled with improvement in the ingredient and confectionary 8 Pollinizers markets, allowed for hazelnut prices to remain relatively stable. Meanwhile, our increased capacity and state-of-the-art facilities allowed us to process the harvest with Growing the record efficiencies, gaining Oregon hazelnut farmers millions in profits. 9 Future This Farmer’s Guide presents useful tips and resources in one easily accessible place to help you prepare for this year’s harvest. HAZELNUT PRODUCTION OREGON’S GROWTH Our industry has experienced 12 years of rapid growth and expansion with the total acreage nearly tripling in size. Fully mature and producing THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY IN acreage currently stands around 35,000 acres, while about 56,000 OREGON new acres have been planted since 2008, of these new acres PRODUCES 99% OF THE UNITED STATES 99% approximately 7,000 have reached full maturity. Total acreage for the HAZELNUT HARVEST industry now stands at approximately 84,000 acres, while new orchards are still being planted at a slower rate. Some farmers are transitioning from crops like cane berries and grass seed to hazelnuts as the popularity of hazelnuts grows. The 2020 harvest yielded about 60,000 tons, and by 2025, the yield is expected to be 90,000 tons annually. HAZELNUT PRODUCTION WORLD MARKETS Oregon hazelnuts make up about 99% of the U.S. hazelnut harvest, but only 4-5% of world production. Still, Oregon is one of the top five hazelnut producing regions in the world. In the 2020–2021 season, USA moved from fifth to tied for third largest hazelnut producing region in the world. The total hazelnut crop worldwide for the 2020–2021 season was estimated at approximately 503,000 metric tons (kernel basis). HOW TO CHOOSE NEW PLANTINGS Before planting a new orchard, one should give serious consideration to varieties, orchard design, orchard site (soil and slope suitability), pre-plant soil management, etc. Some varieties are much more sensitive to Eastern Filbert Blight (EFB). See the chart below for a relative spectrum of EFB susceptibility. With new plantings, one should consider mixing in a number of pollen-compatible varieties, with suggestions at the present time leaning toward the new EFB-resistant gene pollinizer varieties released by OSU Hazelnut Breeding Program, which are Eta, Felix, Gamma, Theta, and York. Here is a list of new varieties with Gasaway resistance gene and their recommended pollinizers. OSU’S HAZELNUT RESEARCH AND EXTENSION PROGRAM GROWING THE FUTURE OSU's Hazelnut Research and Extension has been a long-standing program focusing on tackling emerging issues arising within hazelnut orchards, like Eastern Filbert Blight and the invasive brown marmorated stink bug, to name a few. Nik Wiman was originally hired at OSU in 2012 as a postdoctoral researcher to evaluate the threat of the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) to Oregon specialty crops. Due to the anticipation BMSB would be problematic for hazelnut growers, the focus of the project became hazelnut orchards. "Through this experience I got to know the industry, a few growers and I really loved how the industry was so unique and mostly made up of family farms," says Nik. In 2015, Nik was nominated by the hiring committee to be lead of the Hazelnut Research and Extension Program. The position molded well with Nik's extensive research background, familiarity with the hazelnut industry, and passion for plants and insects. During the organizational transition, the research team was moved to the North Willamette Research and Extension Center in Aurora, OR, where a higher focus on research would be possible. At the Aurora location, Nik and his team manage an experimental station farm, providing a good opportunity to conduct hazelnut research in plots. “I have a number of research plots planted to nuts, and the opportunity to manage these orchards has given my team a deeper connection to growers and better understanding of hazelnut production practices,” says Nik. Nik Wiman, Ph.D. Entomology Nik further discusses the ongoing research and future research to be undertaken: “My research program is diverse; my goal has been to fill in some gaps where we have not had a lot of science to support orchard management practices. We are currently working on management strategies for bud mites, aphids, BMSB and other pests. My team has been putting a lot of work into better understanding nutrient dynamics in the new hazelnut varieties, and now we are moving into carbohydrate dynamics. Carbohydrate content in plant tissues can be linked to yield and flowering in other nut crops. Irrigation research is ongoing, and we are very interested to start working on high-density, fully mechanized orchard designs. Through farm visits, I have developed a strong interest in plant problem diagnosis, and that will be a constant theme of my program as it seems there are many ways to kill a hazelnut tree. I have plans to bring more outreach/educational programming to the industry in the near future as well.” OSU College of Agriculture HAZELNUT RESEARCH + EXTENSION PROGRAM NORTH WILLAMETTE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION CENTER 15210 NE Miley Rd, Aurora, OR 97002 | 503-678-1264 www.extension.oregonstate.edu/crop-production/nuts | OSUHazelnutExtension Jay W.
