PRE-JOINING PROJECT Task 1: Understanding the character and era a film is set in is paramount to a successful hair and make-up design. Designers would explore the trending fashions of the era and the relevant subcultures to inform their design choices. They use portraits, photographs, film or music videos to explore the appropriate fashions and if possible, their own memories. For this task we want you to consider what is in-vogue now that is iconic to 2021. If you were to recreate this era in 20 years' time for a film or television production, what would be recognizable as a definitive fashion trend or style. Consider: make-up, hairstyles, body art, hair accessories, jewellery, clothes. Jot down your ideas to share in a discussion during welcome week. Task 2 An important part of the course is to analyse the cultural and social reasons behind make-up and hair designs. This project is designed to prepare you for analysing professional outputs and justifying your own design choices. When designing characters, we have to explore their origins, social standing and character traits to make the hair and make-up believable to the audience. Make-up colours used, hair styling and accessories added, bruises or dirt all these applications tell us the story of the character. Pick two film or television productions that are set in the same historical era, anything from Egyptian to the 1980’s. Analyse the different approaches to the make-up and hair design and why you think these approaches have been adopted. Which make-up and hair design do you prefer and why? Take into consideration: • Year the film was produced • Director • Make-up and hair designer • Cast • Historical accuracy • Intended audience (age range) • Type of film (musical, love story, action movie, true story) • Character traits Include images to highlight your analysis and present your work in an A4 sketchbook, please bring this sketch book with you on the first day of your welcome week.
