WASTE PREVENTION D PREVENTION IS KEY! While recycling is great, reducing your consumption (or waste prevention) is even better! Waste prevention is the most environmentally preferable Use less... buy less... avoid waste... turn off lights... take shorter showers... carpool! means to reduce waste entering our landfills. The best way to prevent waste is to make purchases with REDUCE and REUSE in mind. Use things more than once... use cloth shopping bags... repair... regift... try travel mugs... compost! REDUCE • Purchase items with minimal packaging, such as purchasing food items in bulk rather than individually packaged. Separate waste materials so that the recyclable products • Stop unwanted junk mail by following the simple steps outlined below. can be transformed into something new! • Think twice before printing, and print on both sides of the paper whenever possible. • Patronize thrift shops, secondhand stores, or even antique stores instead of always buying new. Another way to prevent waste is through reuse! REUSE • Swap out your single-use items for reusable items to reduce your waste. For example, rechargeable batteries, cloth napkins instead of paper, cloth rags and towels instead of paper towels, plastic food storage containers instead of plastic baggies, reusable water bottles instead of single-use plastic bottles, and reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags. Best of all, reusing items often saves you money as well as keeping materials out of landfills! • Don’t buy fertilizer every year for your garden, reuse your food/yard waste by creating your own compost. Learn more about making your own compost on page 16. • Donate your gently used items to thrift shops and local charities so they can be reused by somebody else. Donation centers are listed on page 7. • Drop-off your used motor oil and oil filters at one of the Certified Collection Centers listed on page 10 so the oil can be re-refined and reused over and over again. Remember, your purchases matter Tired of dealing with junk mail? and prevention is key! Think about Junk mail is a waste of time and resources. There are 1,572 recycling centers statewide that buy back empty California Refund Value (CRV) beverage containers, most conveniently located near places you live and work. Most beverages other than milk, wine and distilled spirits are subject to CRV. Important Consumer Refund Info! You can get your beverage recycling refunds on a per-container basis instead of by weight. • By law, you can bring up to 50 aluminum, 50 glass, 50 plastice, and 50 bi-metal California Redemption Value (CRV) containers and request to be paid by count. Inform the site attendant of your load content and how you would like to receive payment before you hand over your load. • Any consumer who has been denied this right by a recycling center can file a complaint via email or by calling 1-800-RECYCLE. • If recycling more than 50 containers of any one material type, the decision to pay by count or weight is determined by the recycling center operator. Make sure your containers are whole and free of contaminants such as dirt, excessive liquid or other foreign substances. If you are being paid by weight, make sure the load contains only eligible CRV beverage containers. • Daily load limits of empty CRV beverage containers are 100 pounds each for aluminum and plastic, and 1,000 pounds of glass. If the load includes containers not eligible for CRV, the recycling center must either reject the load or pay only scrap value. www.ci.manteca.ca.us 12 (209) 456-8440

COMMERCIAL RECYCLING Businesses generate nearly 70% of the solid waste in California. MANDATORY BUSINESS RECYCLING & COMPOSTING AB 1826 Mandatory Organics Recycling Law Starting January 1, 2019, AB 1826 will require businesses, non-profit organizations, multifamily buildings, schools, and government entities that generate 4 cubic yards or more of solid waste to arrange for composting. The intent of the law is to significantly reduce the amount of food scraps and green waste currently sent to landfill. How to achieve compliance: The requirement can be met in the following ways: • Sign up for composting service by having your food scraps and green waste hauled away for composting. SB 1383 Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Signed into law by Governor Brown in 2016, SB 1383 mandates statewide actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. The bill establishes two main targets: 1. By 2020, reduce the organic waste disposal in landfills by 50% from the 2014 level, and 2. By 2025, reduce the organic waste disposal in landfills by 75% from the 2014 level. By this point, no less than 20% of edible food currently disposed must also be recovered for human consumption. Although there is still quite some time to meet the reduction targets, SB 1383 serves as the regulatory force behind both AB 341 and AB 1826, and it imposes heavy fines and penalties for noncompliance. Please make sure your business is in compliance with the two mandatory recycling and composting laws listed on this page to prevent risk of incurring fines. www.ci.manteca.ca.us 15 (209) 456-8440
