COMMODORE’S COMMENTS April 2021 With the cooler weather arriving many members will be planning to spend more time on beautiful Moreton Bay, such a great time for boating generally and meeting up with friends. Covid Since my last update we have seen a relaxation of many of the restrictions and once again I would like to thank members for their co-operation and support over this period. We still however are subject to quite strict controls and requirements around the Club and licensed area, and this is expected to continue for some time. Security issues Unfortunately there is an increase in security problems in the club and marina areas. Equip- ment has gone missing, objects thrown at boats from the walkway along Royal Esplanade and unauthorised personnel have been coming on the premises. Sadly, these issues are not unique to Wynnum Manly Yacht Club and local Police have also advised that there has been an increase in crime since the COVID period. On a positive note, we have been able to assist the Police with video from the camera system recently installed and this has resulted in charges associated with at least one incident. Can I assure members that the Committee is taking this issue very seriously and that the Club and Marina are working together to enhance security. We are also working together with the other Manly clubs and marinas on issues we can address collectively. Projects There are two projects currently in development for the Club. These are the boat ramp and aquatic centre project. Both will be handled by Rear Commodore Tony Shoesmith and Grounds Chairman Peter Miller. The projects will be tabled at the next General Meeting on 19th May 2021. Members are encouraged to come to the meeting and be involved in the decision making around this proposal. The proposal will need a substantial amount of time and funding to complete. The General Meeting will be the appropriate place for members to put their ques- tions and voice their opinions on these projects. Events Due to Covid restrictions and bad weather we have had a few cancellations of club events and water events in recent times. Hopefully, future events will go ahead without interruptions as the COVID restrictions ease and the beautiful winter weather arrives. I would encourage all members to take part in club events and take these opportunities for you and your family to meet other boaties, both sail and motorboats. Enjoy the Bay and stay safe. Danny Pearsall Commodore 4
A Blast from the Past New Members Day 2013 These functions are always well attended, to welcome new members, their families and friends, to talk about boats, experiences and enjoy some food and drinks together. The winter weather is normally perfect., a great way to spend a day. 5

15. General Business: 1) That WMYC Committee is authorised to proceed with request for tenders and subsequent construction of the proposed Aquatic Sports Facility, at a maximum cost of $350,000 plus 10% contingency, PROVIDED that WMYC is able to secure at least $150,000 grants funding for the project. Moved: Tony Shoesmith Seconded: 2) That the following rule (i.e. bylaw) be added to WMYC by-laws, in section 11. Member Use of Clubhouse and Patio Area The only times the outdoor area will be unavailable to members is when the facility has been booked for a function or its use has been otherwise generally prohibited by the WMYC Management Committee. At other times, Members and their guests, can use these facilities for their leisure on a shared basis, subject to the following: * Use of the Patio and BBQ area is always subject to current Government regulations. * If you are planning a special occasion using the patio and BBQ area, it would pay to check with the Office to make sure there are no conflicts with other Club activities or facility bookings. * BBQ utensils and washing up gear will normally be available upon request, and we expect Members who use the facilities to leave them clean when finished. Please use bins provided for general rubbish and recycling to help us keep the area tidy. * BYO food (including use of BBQ) is not permitted when a paid food service is availa- ble at the clubhouse. Members may bring and consume their own food at other times. * As the whole area is licensed, BYO alcohol is not allowed when the Club bar is open. When the Club bar is not operating, BYO alcohol is permitted between the hours of 10am and 10om (but not on Christmas Day, Anzac Day or Good Friday) as long as it is consumed responsibly and within licensing regulations, especially in regard to no al- cohol being served to minors. * Gatherings of more than 25 persons intending to make use of the BBQ area are re- garded as being a function and will require a Clubhouse hiring arrangement to be in place. (These are arranged with the office) For these the clubhouse bar will be en- gaged, and no BYO alcohol will be permitted. Moved: Tony Shoesmith Seconded: John Cave 16. Close Meeting Sharon Boyle, Secretary, Wynnum Manly Yacht Club Inc. 7
Planned Major Projects By Rear Commodore Tony Shoesmith What is the future of our club? Since the completion of the Patio and BBQ upgrade in 2017, a succession of management committees have put much effort into planning a sequence of major projects that would collectively improve the facilities available to members, guests and visitors (and let’s re- member that most members used to be guests or visitors). Three projects were identified and prioritised. It is timely to provide a status update on each of them, as the time is approaching when members need to decide on whether to proceed and invest the money required. First Project: Aquatic Sports Facility The planned aquatic sports facility is to be built on the area adjacent to the existing buoy shed, and roughly where the smaller shed used by MDBC is located. The aquatic sports facility will provide modern shower and toilet facilities for members who have been par- ticipating in on-water activities. It will also provide three separate large garage-sized storage areas that will meet the equipment storage needs of WMYC, WMSC and MDBC well into the future. Another benefit of having shower facilities located in this building is that showers would no longer need to be provided inside the main clubhouse. This project has been fully designed and costed, and all preliminary approvals are in place, including approval from our landlord. Essentially, we can start construction as soon as members agree that it should proceed. However, the anticipated cost is ex- pected to be around $350,000, and we may or may not receive grants to subsidise its cost. Second Project: Ramp Upgrade WMYC used to have the best ramp in Manly harbour. Many other ramps have been up- graded to modern standards and now we have one of the worst. The planned ramp upgrade will maintain a two vehicle width, but it will provide a floating pontoon on the northern side as well as the southern side. There will also be floating walking ramps on each side of the concrete ramp to give safe access to the floating pon- toons in all tide conditions. The plans also provide for around a 3 metre extension of the pontoon length, heading east. 8
Planned Major Projects continued ... This project is in the final design stage, and we are at the point where we would need to seek planning approvals from various authorities. The anticipated cost of this project is expected to be around $250,000. Once again, we may or may not receive grants to subsidise its cost. Third Project: Clubhouse Extension There have been many proposals for clubhouse extension since the clubhouse was first constructed. In fact, there was one extension successfully completed in the 1990’s, when the bar was moved to its current location and the existing kitchen and bathrooms were added. Sadly, the existing “donga” being used for office accommodation is at end of its life. So are the bathrooms, which continue to malfunction and do not meet current community standards. Also, the kitchen, while operational, has many design defects and most ca- terers over the years have complained about its poor design and placement. The proposed clubhouse extension would seek to remedy these matters, and also pro- vide a modern and welcoming reception entrance that would link via a walkway to a pedestrian entrance on the esplanade. Although this project has been envisaged for some time, it is only now in the initial stag- es of producing concept drawings. What Happens Next? Clearly, we need to be actively pursuing grants funding to help reduce the cost burden of these projects. Members need to decide whether or not to proceed with each of these projects. To help this discussion, I intend to move a motion for the May general meeting, that will ask members to approve expenditure for the Aquatic Sports Facility. So members can be better informed, I am hoping we will be able to conduct consulta- tion sessions on the mornings of May 8 and May 15, where members would be able to ask questions and raise issues. Ultimately the club’s future is decided by its members. However, our clubhouse and grounds are in dire need of improvements. To do nothing will relegate our club to continue as is, and slowly wither. 9
“THE MUSE” —Brisbane to Gladstone 2021 This was my first Brisbane to Gladstone race! After years of waving others off on their B2G adventures and hearing the recent and ancient stories, I got my act to- gether. An act not possible without a great crew - see below for full credits, in- cluding land support from Peter, my partner and Kate, my daughter. Events such as these are not possible without the organisers so, many, many thanks to the Race Committee, particularly Race Director, Karen Sommerville, QCYC, PCYC and Gladstone Port Authority. These are the words from our adventurous foredeckie, Peter G which I whole- heartedly support! What a race. And what a great crew (Lindsay Granger, Rob Wassell, Blair Harri- son, Tara Ducker, and Eric Knowles, and Peter Blanchard as support crew). Con- grats to other Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race Competitors too, especially Wistari and our very friendly sister ship and marina mates Flying Colours II. Thanks also to QCYC and the everyone involved making the race happen un- der extremely challenging pandemic and weather circumstances. To The Muse, PHRF Div 2 second place (the trophy is there to prove it, I promise - it's just a modest, if very sturdy, glass version) for a 25 year old, well appointed racing yacht *cough* on her first trip to Gladstone, with an also new-to-B2G skip- per (the only female one to successfully complete the race!) under extremely heavy conditions, was a noteworthy result! We didn't see our wind instrument drop below 20 knots for the entire race (well, at least before it packed it in on the way to Lady Elliot), and it regularly was over 30kn. Nothing short of 2-3m swell the whole way either, though it was a metre bigger at times from NW Fairway at Point Cartwright to Breaksea. From the lack of starter's shotgun, until right into Gladstone Harbour, nothing abated, even up- on rounding the corner across the paddock. The Muse's 7.9 knots VMG over 300+ nm and no major breakages or injuries isn't bad for a 35ft solid GRP girl (stanchions and bruises don't count, right?)! It really points to the strength, ex- perience and commitment of the crew, as well as the fastidiousness of prepara- tion in the lead up. A third of the fleet retired hurt, including Black Jack, and many more didn't make the start, so just crossing the finish line will be memora- ble. I loved every 2330 minutes of it (even the ones between pulling down sails on the foredeck spent feeling as queasy as the sea was greasy)! Best yet B2G! Bring on next Easter! LIFE JACKETS A new standard for lifejackets AS4758 was introduced in Queensland in 2008. These new lifejackets have better flotation and replace the old AS1512 and AS1499 which were introduced in 1996. The Government originally planned on a phase in period until 2016. The reality is the phase in period is still happening. Marine Safety Qld. are still allowing the old standard AS1512 and AS1499 if they are in very good condition. This transition period is about to end. As from 1st September 2021 you will be fined if you do not have the current AS4758 lifejackets for everybody on board. As not all states have the same standards as Qld. be very careful if you buy on line or interstate, they may be the wrong standard. Only buy AS4758. GO SLOW AREAS I know all our members observe the go slow areas that are in the bay to protect wildlife, mainly Turtles and Dugong, but be warned Qld. Parks & Wildlife are now patrolling these areas with Drones. The first you will know about it is when you receive the fine in the mail. Please do the right thing and you have nothing to worry about. CRAB POTS Qld. Parks & Wildlife are also targeting illegally placed and lost crab pots. A few weeks ago they retrieved 85 pots in Pumicestone passage in one week-end and issued fines where applicable. SAILING Of interest to our SAGS competitors, B.O.M. have placed a weather station on the Hope Bank beacon which should give more accurate weather forecasting in our part of the bay. The downside of this is that if anyone collides with the Hope Bank beacon, which has happened in the past, it will prove to be a very expensive accident. Because of this possibility RQYS has requested MSQ to place a yellow special mark in the vicinity of the Hope Bank beacon as a rounding mark for yachts. This is only a proposal at this stage so don’t expect anything to happen quickly. I will keep you posted. 12

SAILING REPORT This year the Sailing Club has continued to increase the number of SAGs Sunday Skip- pers, as well as enticing new crew who are coming regularly. The weather has been mixed and on some occasions very light winds have been better than predicted. Haydn and Diane have the handicapping under control except for Troubadour and Pure Logic. I am sure there will be a correction eventually. I would like thank Diane for being our back up to Haydn, and also for our Sags event. The Inshore regatta was run in late February with 14 competitors, slightly down on last year. It was a good event enjoyed by all. There was a good turnout and new entrants in the Lady Skipper Series last weekend. Membership renewals for Sailing Club and crew membership will be invoiced in June. As many of you will know Sailing Club skippers must be financial members of the WMYC and it follows that your crew be associate members of WMYC. The Sailing Club enjoys the assets which the Yacht Club has provided for us, keeping us within regula- tions and covid safe (covid compliance and your safety is very expensive) and to be financial brings team contribution and not just burden on a few. Sail pass is an option for crews/ visitors but you reach point where you are paying more than what Sailing Club member ship will cost. Sailpass must be paid before the event and on line is pre- ferred, as Sunday mornings are extremely busy. Membership brings Australian Sailing affiliations and some Insurance. Hart Cup is out next Major event over the weekend of 1,2,3 May and Registration is online. Having crewed in the event I can say it’s lot of fun and a chance to learn new sailing skills in a variety of weather. WMYC Marina Ltd, Slipway Services “ Saint Helena Cup” raced over 9 & 10th Octo- ber, mark it in your diary whether you are sailing or helping, we need you there. 2021 Confirmed WMSC sponsors are supporting us and we need to support them: WMYC Marina Ltd Slipway Services, Ullman Sails, Manly Hotel, Muir’s Marina, Hood Sails. See you on the water! Rob Hyland, Sailing Chairman 18

Marina Report AHOY, Just a quick note to all mariners. The navigation aids, IE channel markers, to Manly har- bour were repositioned late last year. The Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) ‘’Notice to Mariners 302 of 2020’’ refers. As we are all good skippers and want to keep up to date, please check out the latest info on the MSQ website or the Marina noticeboard. You may be aware that we have experienced issues with marine growth on pontoon py- lons and after quite a bit of research and listening to various ideas, we have come up with a solution that should resolve future issues. Our current focus is on the piles locat- ed at the end of berth fingers, we intend replacing the existing collars with a 6 roller bracket that should prevent any further problems and ensure freedom of movement during tidal and wind changes. On a more serious note, unfortunately we have recently had unwanted visitors (read trespassers) both day and night on the premises. If you notice any suspicious person or activity please report it to the marina or club office & don’t forget to lock up your ves- sel and property. Look out for each other and safe Boating. Phillip LLewellyn “MID PACIFIC’’ ready for the water. She was built in 1957 & has had 3 owners over the years. The current owner has loved her for the last 42 years in which time she has sailed all around QLD and as far out as Cato Island. One infamous incident was that she was stolen in the early 60’s, but was thankfully recovered on her way to NZ?? 26
CRUISING REPORT We started the cruising year off well with a day trip to St Helena Island and a guided tour of the penal ruins and other interesting history of the island. The tour was followed by a pot luck lunch. There were 15 boats that made the short trek to St Helena with almost 40 members and guests onboard. Our inaugural WMYC caravan and camping trip to Maleny in mid-March unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the torrential rain we experienced at that time. Unfortunately, our Easter cruise also had to be cancelled due to weather (strong winds and rain) as well as uncertainty about Covid lockdowns which you would all be aware of. Both of these events will be rescheduled, your Committee is looking at dates in May that do not coincide or disrupt other Club events. Warren Lowry Cruising Director “Ballore” 27
DRAGONBOAT CLUB REPORT The 2020/2021 season is coming to a finish with the Coast to Coast Regatta featuring Queensland and interstate clubs being held at Kawana in early May. It has been a quite different year due to the restrictions imposed by COVID-19 – the CCWC due to be held in France last August was cancelled as were the National Championships scheduled for Perth. The club performed well in the Queensland State Championships held in March with three gold medals and three silver medals spread across the crews. The annual Awards Night will be held at Wynnum Golf Club on Saturday 19 June and the AGM is set down for 14 August. And so we look forward to next season with a lot of new paddlers to the club settling in extremely well. Besides the normal regattas the National Championships are scheduled for Adelaide and the CCWC for Sarasota, Florida in June 2022 – MDBC currently has six crews which have qualified for this event. Freak of Navigation The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought the result to the master, Captain John Phillips. The Warrimoo’s position was LAT 0 degrees 31' N and LON 179 degrees 30' W. The date was 30 December 1899. “Know what this means?” First Mate Payton broke in, “We’re only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line”. Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check and double check the ship's position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather and clear night worked in his favour. At midnight the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crosses the International Date Line. The consequences of this bizarre position were several. The bow of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere and the middle of summer. The stern was in the Northern Hemisphere and in the middle of winter. The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899. Forward it was 1 January 1900. This ship was therefore not only in two different days, two different months, two different years and two different seasons, but in two different centuries – all at the same time. 31
