ENUE, MILLBURN, NJ ILLBURN AV 07041 3 75 M January / February 2021 Volume 7 - Issue #1 www.twp.millburn.nj.us/seniors WE DID IT!! We made it through the challenging year of 2020. It was the year that went on and on. It was a year where many could not wait until it ended. While there are some challenges that will continue, we are more capable of handling them because we are real troupers. Whether you realize it or not, we have grown from this past years experience. Perhaps you learned a new skill or had more time to attack a home project that has been lingering for some time. Maybe you have a new appreciation for the many things in life we used to take for granted. When the weather was warm, my husband and I bought tickets to an outdoor movie on the big screen. This was our first venture out in a long time. For the first time in many months, we saw people outside of our small network ...from a distance, of course. We set up our folding chairs in our assigned area, organized our snacks and the movie began. The quality of the picture was mediocre, and the sound quality was so poor that we ended up watching the same movie a few days later on our television to hear what we missed. Regardless, it was a beautiful evening ...except for the 15-minute downpour of rain in the middle of the movie. Before this past year, if we had paid to see a movie and had an experience like the one we did, I do not think we would have felt as if we had a nice time. However, in this case we did! This was not a situation that we took for granted anymore. So here's to the future, whatever it may bring. Perhaps over time, we will find a more peaceful nation filled with a familiar routine and optimism. Sincerely, Jaimee Hawkins Senior Citizen Coordinator
While we continue to find ourselves in this unusual situation, we will adhere to the guidence of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and Millburn Health Department. Everyone’s health and safety comes first. A majority of our usual programs, plus a few new ones are being conducted using the internet or online virtual meetings. We will continue to evaluate the situation over time in regards to meeting again in person. As we approach the colder months, Influenza and COVID-19 begin to spread, both caused by two different viruses. COVID-19 and influenza are respiratory illnesses that can cause similar symptoms such as fever, body aches, fatigue, runny nose, and sore throat. However, a loss of taste and/or smell is a symptom that is unique to COVID-19 and not generally a symptom of the flu. Both COVID-19 and influenza are spread through respiratory droplets. These droplets are most commonly spread to another person if they are within 6 feet of one another. A person can also acquire it by touching their face with their hands after they come in contact with a surface that contains the virus. Once a person is exposed to influenza they are likely to show symptoms within 1-4 days, but for people who are exposed to COVID-19 it can take up to 14 days for symptoms to appear. Unfortunately, for both viruses, a person is still likely to be contagious prior to showing any symptoms. Besides wearing a face mask, you can take measures to prevent yourself from getting sick with COVID-19 and the flu by washing your hands well with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. You can also use an alcohol based hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol) to clean your hands. Additional measures include; avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes, limit your contact with others, clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces, and maintain a social distance when around others. Flu vaccines are widely available. They may prevent someone from getting the flu or they may only get a mild case; therefore, preventing other complications from developing. If you have not received a flu vaccine yet, it is not too late. Right now, there are several COVID-19 vaccines being trialed for production that will hopefully be available to the general public soon. If you were exposed to someone with COVID-19, be sure to complete the full quarantine period as advised which can limit the spread if you were to develop the virus. If you are experiencing any symptoms, contact your health care provider who can determine what is causing your symptoms. SENIOR HOTLINE - JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 - PAGE 11
