OUD C CIO GE EDGE 20-22 February 2018 | Grand Hyatt - Melbourne At February’s CIO Edge, ADAPT were proud to host 200 CIOs from organisations responsible for 1/3 of Australia’s GDP. Operating at speed is key in our app economy, so our theme was “How to Achieve Agility?”, 45 contributors from 10 countries brought their lessons and practical advice for how to keep up, and then get ahead. Our business school teaching didn’t prepare us for the digital world – and the internet giants are innovating at scale with the skills to outgun us all. So how do you lead a tech stack and govern IT for your business and customers in the best way to achieve agility? We must take more risks, we can’t invent without mistakes – but are you honestly allowed to make them? We hear so much about innovation and the shift from ‘command and control’ to Agile Tribes, ‘test and learn’. But sadly, our local CIO data tells us a different story, and many are stuck in a very different place. How can you achieve Agility if legacy systems hold you back? How can you find time to innovate or invent if you’re struggling to get budget, and managing BAU and shadow IT? How can you offer real CX if you have a spaghetti factory of siloed apps and data? Or if your internal culture puts roadblocks in your path? ADAPT’s mission is to help advance Australian organisations on the global stage – to harness the world’s collective expertise – to connect the right people at the right time for the right reasons – and to equip each of you to manage through this relentless pace of change. Our February event set the stage for this – now it is up to our fearless community of CIOs to take control and lead! Jim Berry CEO & Founder Jim Berry CEO & Founder ADAPT 2

Sample Size 130 Aus & NZ CIO’s We asked CIOs about their purchasing plans for 100 areas of technology, and the top 20 investment priorities are ranked here. Application Integration has now been #1 for 2 years due to the increasing challenge of managing the spaghetti factory of siloed legacy and new cloud apps, as well as shadow IT. The same desire to manage complexity and improve internal user and external customer experience can be seen across our Top 5 areas. All 20 are heavy in collaborative technologies – to enable and securely mobilise work and data flows. Many areas are more reactive than proactive and focused on BAU, but so are most of our CIOs - although these also do create a foundation to leverage emerging tech; and for the first time a real disruptor makes the top 20 with AI seeing significant plans for investment in 2018. Source: ADAPT CIO Edge Feb 2018. Sample Size 130 Aus & NZ CIO’s No surprises that legacy systems and processes continue to be CIOs biggest challenges, but we see business siloes and culture now becoming bigger roadblocks. After all, it is the people and uptake that slows our growth, not the Tech itself. Lack of in-house skills is an increasing barrier - highlighting the changing skillsets required and the increasing importance of coding, and we see both compliance regulation and shadow IT growing in significance. Interesting that budget appears to be less of a problem, along with non-tech-savvy C-Suite and board - a good sign that boards and CEOs seem to have a greater appreciation of the importance of IT – and hopefully a desire to take on more risk and allow the room to test and learn that will enable real innovation.
