1. MESSAGES O nce more, we are heading to Barcelona, the city which has presented the Euro- pean Aquatic Family with so many fond memories in the past. It’s almost half a century when the irst big event was held here, the 1970 European Champions- hips. And plenty more followed, including Olympic Games, World Champions- hips and other outstanding meets – and each proved that Barcelona is truly a city of sport where locals do not only cheer for Leo Messi and his brilliant team but they love all other sports and also keen to practice those by themselves. The LEN Family is always happy to come here as the above-described enthusiasm is com- bined with the utmost professionalism and commitment of the experienced organisers and the available venues and accommodation are world-class by any means. Whether it’s the Champions League Final Six tournaments (held here in 2014 and 2015) or the annual LEN Open Water Swimming European Cup, Barcelona has never disappointed any stake- holders. Now it’s time for another grand occasion: the European Water Polo Championships in July. The bar has been set high, indeed really high, by the previous hosts since Budapest (2014) and Belgrade (2016) produced unforgettable events. Still, if there is a city in our continent which can be up to the challenge to ascend to the heights reached by the two water polo capitals, it’s deinitely Barcelona. LEN and the water polo family do need another magniicent tournament. This sport has proved in recent meets again and again that the game is spectacular, exciting, adorable by the fans – in a professionally designed and created environment it’s just as a great show as any other events, either watched on site or in the TV. Setting another ine example is the best tool to reach even higher goals. I’m sure that the 2018 European Water Polo Championships in Barcelona will be another milestone in LEN’s history and in the discipline’s history. We can demonstrate the strength, the skills, the abi- lities of Europe and show the path to follow for all stakeholders. As the motto of the championships say: ‘Don’t Stop!’ It’s true: nothing can stop Europe and water polo to advance new dimensions this summer! Let me thank the eforts of the organisers, the municipality of Barcelona and the Mayor Ada Colau and all Partners involved to deliver another outstanding event. We are eagerly waiting to be there and witness the beginning of the Championships! Paolo Barelli LEN President WP2018 WATERPOLO | 3
A s President of the Organising Committee, I am pleased to welcome all the people and communities who will gather in Barcelona to live the 33rd LEN European Water Polo Championships Barcelona 2018. I would like to express my gratitude to the par- ticipating teams, institutions (CSD, Catalan Government, Provincial Government, City Council and Catalan Federation), sponsors, media outlets and volunteers, without whom this event would not be possible. Once again, Barcelona has proven to be the quintessential water sports capital, able to host major international sporting events. This is not news. Barcelona’s relation with European aqua- tics goes back to the successful European Championships in 1970. Almost 50 years have gone by since that historic event, but in 2003 Barcelona hosted for the irst time the FINA World Aquatics Championships and repeated the achievement again ten years later. In all those litmus tests, Barcelona demonstrated a solid organisational capacity, a strong social support and a diferent way to make things compared to its predecessors, all of which have be- come crucial elements to successfully host once again a top-class event such as the European Water Polo Championships. I want to give a warm welcome to all the delegations which over the past several months have rightfully won the right to compete for the titles of European champions. 16 men’s and 12 wo- men’s teams will ight for European glory over the course of two thrilling weeks. I wish them all a fantastic tournament and hope they stage a sensational show, without forge- tting the Spanish national teams, hosts of this great event held at the Bernat Picornell Pool. Eu- ropean water polo is going through an excellent time, with squads that dominate the interna- tional scene, a growing audience and younger players who will become the stars of tomorrow. I wanted to put emphasis on this younger generation of water polo enthisiast, since on the days prior to the European Water Polo Championships, the Barcelona public pool in Montjuïc will host the irst edition of HaBaWaBa Spain, which receives the baton from the major interna- tional kids’ competition. I believe that without these eforts water polo as we know it will cease to exist in the future, which is why being able to see such an enthusiastic group of kids play alongside their idols is fantastic news. It’s show time… Welcome to Barcelona 2018! Fernando Carpena RFEN and OC President 4 | WP2018 WATERPOLO

4.BARCELONA AND THE LEN EUROPEAN INTRODUCING THE LEN EUROPEAN WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS BARCELONA 2018 Attendees from 11 countries, including Spain (Mr. Casanovas), green-lighted the European Water Polo Championships – formerly part of the European Aquatics Championships– in a historical gathering that took place in Budapest on October 19, 1926. The Swede Erik Bergvall, President of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) at the time, conduc- ted the meeting, where some far-reaching decisions were made regarding the evolution of this sport. The main one was the agreement to organize the event every four years, alternating with the Olympic Games. The irst European Championships took place that same year, in 1926, and, to avoid being eclipsed by the Summer Olympics at all costs, the second was cele- brated in 1927 and the third in 1931. Budapest hosted a very successful edition and was followed by Bologna. In addition to the Spanish representative, the Germans Binner and Behrens, the Austrian Duhmkholer, the Belgians Delahaye and De Raeve, the Frenchman Drigny, the Greek Protopoulos, the Italian Jar, the Poles Semandeni and Facher, the Czech Hauptmann and Hofbauer, the president of FINA and the host, the Hungarian Donath, were responsible for the creation the championships, that will soon celebrate their 33rd edition. John Hodg- son, representing Great Britain, was also present, but only as an observer. The irst president of LEN was Bergvall himself, later replaced by the German Walther Bin- ner. The championships were an overnight success, evolving to the current format, irst with the creation of a women’s tournament (Oslo, 1985) and then with the separation of water polo, that didn’t have its own competition until 1997 (swimming and diving shared the same competition). Now, they take place every two years, over the summer in the middle of the Olympic cycle (as in 2018), or at the beginning of the year if it coincides with the Summer Olympics. The European Water Polo Champions have taken place in Spain on three occasions. Barce- lona will be, in 2018, the irst city to host the tournament twice, after organizing it in 1970. The setting will be the same, at the Bernat Picornell Pools, that were inaugurated in 1969 just before the irst championships. After Barcelona, the European Water Polo Championships took place in Seville (1997) and Malaga (2008). In 1997 the old format was still in place (multidisciplinary, with swimming, diving and synchronized swimming events), inally evolving before Malaga 2008 (only wa- ter polo). In 2016, in the last edition of the European Water Polo Championships, the champion teams were Hungary in the women’s category and Serbia in the men’s category. WP2018 WATERPOLO | 9
BARCELONA, CITY OF SPORT Barcelona is one of the most prominent cities in the world with a great interest in sports. And not only from the point of view of the organization of major international events, but by the degree of participation of its citizens, who mostly practice some sport throughout the year. The celebration last year of the 25th anniversary of the organization of the 1992 Olympic Games showed the moment when Barcelona decided to join the group of cities in the world that are passionate about sport and demonstrate it. In the Sports Cities Index made in 2017 by TSE Consulting and the magazine Around the Rings, Barcelona was classiied in fourth position, surpassed only by London, Rio de Ja- neiro and Lausanne. The ranking values the organization of sporting events, the existing sports facilities and the active and healthy population of the cities. One in two Barcelonans regularly practices sports, which places Barcelona as an example for the majority of large cities in the world. Sport has become an essential practice for the welfare of society. The climate and facilities of the city allow many sports activities that can be practiced regularly and throughout the year. In the ield of water sports, Barcelona has twice hosted the World Swimming Champions- hips (water polo included) in 2003 and 2013 and one the European Championships (swim- ming only), in 1970. 10 | WP2018 WATERPOLO
