MANAGING OBJECTIONS
Potential donors may have questions concerning United Way of Coastal Georgia or your workplace
campaign. Your sincerity and personal commitment are the best tools to use when responding to an
objection. Since most objections are based on misconceptions, respond with, “If that were not an issue
would you consider making a contribution?” By providing the correct information, you can usually
overcome the objection, which may lead to a contribution.

TIPS FOR MANAGING OBJECTIONS

LISTEN. Listen to what your potential contributor is saying or asking. Listening promotes openness and
acceptance.

ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIP. Objections are not personal. Often, just talking to a person about why
giving is important and finding out what that person’s personal priorities are can ease the process.

DO NOT ARGUE. If you receive objections from some you are soliciting, do not argue.

ANSWER OBJECTIONS WITH FACTS. Say thank you. Regardless of the prospect’s response, always
leave with a smile and a thank you.

REMEMBER TO THINK LONG-TERM. Every question provides an opportunity to communicate how
United Way of Coastal Georgia is building a stronger community for everyone in the region. You may not
get the person to pledge this year, but you are planting the seeds for the future.

TALKING THROUCH COMMON OBJECTIONS

Here are some effective responses to common objections:

How is United Way of Coastal Georgia connected to United Ways in other cities?

Each United Way is an independent and self-governing organization tied to each other through the
desire to provide each of our communities with a chance at a better future. The money raised by United
Way of Coastal Georgia stays in Glynn and McIntosh counties.

Who decides where my contribution goes?

The Community Investment Committee, which consists of community volunteers from Glynn and
McIntosh counties, serves as the eyes and ears in deciding how to invest in our community. They
consider the needs of the community and the overall impact of the agencies when making their funding
recommendations.

                                                                                              10 | P a g e
MANAGING OBJECTIONS (Continued)
I give directly to XYZ charity/organization. Why should I give to United Way of Coastal Georgia?

    • United Way of Coastal Georgia adds value to your contribution by providing annual eligibility
requirements for nonprofits’ budgets and programs, ensuring that your gift is being used
        effectively.
    • United Way of Coastal Georgia’s annual campaign efforts give area nonprofit organizations a
reliable source of funding without having to allocate scarce resources to
solicit individual contributions. These organizations can count on United Way of Coastal Georgia
to cost-effectively promote and administer a single campaign that raises money for many causes
        at once.
    • While you may give to other worthy causes as well, view your United Way of Coastal Georgia gift
as a “gift to the community” because it supports a network of partner agencies with wide-
reaching impact throughout Glynn and McIntosh counties.
    • When you contribute to United Way of Coastal Georgia directly, you are investing in targeted
solutions and programs within our community. You can also choose to contribute to United Way
of Coastal Georgia’s Community Impact Fund, which focuses on making a significant impact in
the areas of education, financial stability and health.

How do you know the money you give to united way of coastal Georgia is being used
effectively?

The United Way of Coastal Georgia considers itself as an investor and connector of the best agencies
within Glynn and McIntosh counties. Our Community Investment Committee and members of our board
of directors are involved in every step of our community investment plan.

I never use agency services. Why should I give?

The strength of a community is directly influenced by the health and well-being of its residents. Every
day, United Way-supported programs help people – including some who may be your friends and
neighbors – improve their lives. Your financial and volunteer support ensures that help is available for
someone who needs it now or in the future.

If I stop working for current employer, what happens to my payroll-contribution pledge?
Your pledge will not automatically be routed to your new place of employment or to your home. If you
do change jobs or are no longer working, please contact United Way of Coastal Georgia at (912) 265-
1850. At that time, you can decide whether you are able to fulfill your original pledge or adjust it. If you

                                                                                                11 | P a g e
MANAGING OBJECTIONS (Continued)

have switched jobs and your current employer runs a United Way NCA campaign, it is possible to set up
a payroll contribution through the new employer.

My spouse gives for both of us, why should I give to United Way of Coastal Georgia?
Research indicates that donors perceive that one of the most significant benefits of personal giving is
the feeling of being part of a collective effort to solve problems and make a difference in their
community. Be a part of your workplace community by joining with fellow employees in the United Way
of Coastal Georgia effort.

I’m never going to use these services, so why should I give?
One in three people in the greater Washington area benefits from the services provided by United Way
of Coastal Georgia -supported partner agency. At one time or another, almost everyone has a health and
human service issue and may need help. Most likely, you or someone you know has used services
provided by United Way of Coastal Georgia partner agency such as the America’s Second Harvest, Boys
& Girls Club, Safe Harbor Children’s Center, The Salvation Army and many more.

Some of our employees and their families are on tight budgets; should we invite them to be
part of the campaign?
Yes, most people appreciate the opportunity to participate. Giving through payroll contribution is easy
and convenient. Payroll contribution allows everyone to participate by spreading the contribution over
time. This allows those on tight budgets to participate and be part of the solution. Even a small amount
per pay period makes a difference.

Does United Way fund the same agencies every year?
United Way of Coastal Georgia provides annual grants, not lifelong entitlements. The Community
Investment process is open to any agency that meets eligibility criteria for program funding. This allows
United Way to fund the best available programs to address the needs of the community. Grant funding
is made possible through united way’s diverse resource development efforts.

Can I designate my gift? I prefer to support one or two agencies directly.
Yes, donations over $250 may be designated to the Partner Agency of your choice. However, by
donating to the United Way Community Fund, your contribution supports all our partner agencies which
meet various human service needs to better the community.

                                                                                              12 | P a g e

giving allows your employees to make a meaningful difference and sets your organization apart as a
leader in our community.

EMPLOYEE CONTRIBUTIONS – MAKING THE ASK
People give to United Way of Coastal Georgia because they believe in what we do. Your knowledge,
enthusiasm and commitment to supporting United Way of Coastal Georgia are key to encouraging
employee pledges. Sincerely communicating your commitment to supporting the community through
United Way of Coastal Georgia really does make a difference.

BE PREPARED

If possible, team members should be assigned to speak with individual employees about a potential
contribution. Before beginning, each team member should prepare himself or herself by

   • Showing commitment to United Way of Coastal Georgia by making or increasing his or her
contribution before asking co-workers to pledge themselves. It is much easier to ask others to
do what you have already done.
   • Watching the campaign video.
   • Reading or sharing testimonials from people who have been helped by United Way of Coastal
Georgia. Testimonials may be requested from your United Way of Coastal Georgia
Representative or can be found online at www.uwcga.org.
   • Learning more about United Way of Coastal Georgia’s mission, vision and our impact in the
       community.

FIVE STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL ASK

Leaving contribution forms in employee’s mailboxes does not constitute an effective “ask.” Here are
steps to take when asking for employee contributions:

1. GET THE DONORS UNDIVIDED ATTENTION

   • Consider catching the donor on a break, at a staff meeting or at an organized staff event and ask
him or her to consider participating in the campaign.

2. EXPLAIN THE PURPOSE OF UNITED WAY OF COASTAL GEORGIA AND WHY YOU SUPPORT
   OUR MISSION

   • Bring United Way of Coastal Georgia materials and be prepared to explain them.
   • Share a personal story and/or provide United Way of Coastal Georgia facts and statistics.

                                                                                            19 | P a g e
EMPLOYEE CONTRIBUTIONS – MAKING THE ASK (Continued)
3. ASK FOR A CONTRIBUTION

   • For new donors, ask for a first-time gift.
   • For previous donors, consider asking for a specific increase such as $5 more per week or pay
       period.

4. ADDRESS CONCERNS AND QUESTIONS

   • Know your materials, answer questions honestly – never guess. If you do not know the answer
to a question, let the donor know you will find out and let them know, then follow up with your
United Way of Coastal Georgia Representative.
   • Recognize some donors have real concerns; people have a right to feel good about their gift. If
any of your colleagues would like to contact your United Way of Coastal Georgia Representative
directly with questions, please encourage them to do so. We are here to support you and your
       campaign.

5. SAY THANK YOU

   • Regardless of what the donor decides, thank him or her for their time.
   • People like to know their gift of time or financial support is appreciated.

                                                                                           20 | P a g e

PUT CONTRIBUTIONS INTO ACTION – YOUR PAYMENT
SCHEDULE

Following are some best practices for getting your contributions into the community in a timely and
  efficient manner:

  • Meet with your United Way of Coastal Georgia Representative and your payroll department
early in your campaign to determine your payment strategy and schedule.
  • Be sure to remit any paid-in-full donations, cash and checks with your contribution forms in your
      Campaign Report Envelope (CRE).
  • Continuing payroll contribution payments should be remitted on a monthly basis (smaller
campaigns could consider a quarterly schedule). Ongoing payments should be remitted to:

              United Way of Coastal Georgia
              P.O. Box 877
              Brunswick, GA 31521

  • The most common payroll contribution period usually runs from January 1 through December
      31. Some companies use their fiscal year as their schedule for payroll contributions. United
Way of Coastal Georgia does not set your payroll schedule; it is a company decision.
  • United Way of Coastal Georgia remits all employee donations to partner agencies on a monthly
basis. For other questions, please contact your United Way Representative.
  • Send a notice to your employees when the first payment is made, letting them know their
contributions are going out into the community. This is a great opportunity to thank them again
      for their support.

WHEN YOUR CAMPAIGN IS COMPLETED

  A. Collect all contribution forms. You can send out a reminder email, designate solicitors on your
team to ask every person individually to turn in a form or create a special incentive for
contribution forms turned in by a certain date.
  B. Count the number of donors and the amount raised in each of the following categories: cash,
check, online payment and payroll deductions.
