HAPPY AND HEALTHY It’s Winter! Whether you enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, or curling up with a good book, it is important to keep in mind that you can have fun without the use of alcohol, marijuana, or vaping. Did you know that using these substances before your brain is fully developed at age 25 can cause lifelong damage? You only get one brain, so be sure to take good care of it! PENGUIN AWARENESS DAY January 20th Can you walk around in the snow like a penguin? Slide down a hill on your stomach like a penguin? Walk with a ball balanced on the top of your feet? Borrow a book on penguins from your library. How many species are there around the world? Write about your favorite penguin. NATIONAL FLY A KITE DAY February 8th Make your own kite using recycled materials. You can use large paper bags, plastic bags, two straight sticks, string, and tape to design your own kite. TRACKS IN THE SNOW! OH NO! Here are two fun track activities to try: 1) Make Yeti tracks - draw & cutout cardboard feet to attach to the bottom of your boots. Create a trail outside for friends to follow. 2) Make a track story - walk, run, jump, crawl. See if your friends can figure out how you were moving with each different kind of track. SNOWFLAKE ART Collect different sized sticks, leaves or natural items and design your own snowflake art in the snow. Remember snowflakes have 6 sides. SELF CARE During this pandemic many people have felt more stress than normal. Coping skills are actions, thoughts, or behaviors that can WHEN D help you manage your stress in the AL O TI I NE moment. Try one of these coping IN skills when you feel stressed: • Go for a walk (explore a walking trail or even your neighborhood) • Take five slow, deep breaths Points 5 • Do a hobby (draw, listen to music, write, take pictures, play a sport, learn a TikTok dance) Write about the coping skill you decided to try. How did it make you feel? Would you do it again? Fun is good for our mental health. We encourage you to get out there, do something that makes you happy and make healthy choices! BE A TRAIL KEEPER Take a garbage bag and work gloves on one of your trail walks and pick up any trash you see. Thank you for keeping trails safe and clean for wildlife! Share a photo of your favorite trail. WHEN D AL O TI I NE IN 4 Points 18 PARKS
TREES TELL TALES Use your sense of touch to get to know some trees. Put on a blindfold and take turns guiding a friend or family member to meet trees along the trail. Feel the bark. Is it smooth or rough? Hug the tree and see how big around it is. Meet several trees and see how they are different and alike by touch. Take some paper and a crayon to make bark rubbings. TRAIL DRUMMING As you walk a trail look for two good sticks that could be used for drumming. Try drumming on different trees, stumps, fallen logs, woodpecker trees. How are the tones different? WINTER PICNIC Pack some fun foods to try along with a warm drink like hot chocolate. Find a great spot to spread a blanket or a large bolder to picnic on. Take in the nature sights, sounds, and smells around you. WHEN D AL O TI I NE Write a poem about your winter picnic. IN 4 Points PARKS 21
MAKE A SOUND MAP Take your passport and a pencil or pen with you on a trail or in your neighborhood. Draw a tiny picture of yourself in the center of the space. Sit quietly and close your eyes. When you hear a sound open your eyes and draw an arrow from “you” in the direction of the sound, then draw a symbol for what your heard at the end of the arrow (like a bird or car). TRAIL SEARCH Take an empty container or bag with you on a trail walk. See if you can find these items along your walk. Fill in the bar graph when you have found all the objects. MAGIC WAND Find the perfect sized stick for your wand (a good weight and length for you). Use sand paper to make your wand smooth. Use permanent markers to draw designs on your wand. MAKE YOUR OWN VEGGIE CHIPS Thinly slice carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, yellow squash, zucchini, rutabagas, parsnips, or potatoes. For the more watery veggies place on a towel and salt lightly (to absorb the water. Spread oil on a cookie sheet. SPROUTS, SPROUTS, SPROUTS Regrow left over parts of veggies. Take the root sections of celery, lettuce, or cabbage and place them in a bowl or glass with warm water. Set them where they can get some sun. You will see roots start to grow down into the water and sprouts come out the top. You can also regrow potatoes and carrots. Share a photo of your sprouts!
