Match Reports Stage 1 Marist Blue, 5/244, defeated St Edmunds White, 15/72. Bowling: Jimmy Bartlett 6/3, Xavier Batch 3/2, Ethan Teede 2/6, Noah Batch 1/5 and Oliver Brew 1/10. Batting: Riley Edmondson 30*, Ethan 26*, Jimmy 23, Noah 22, Henry Atkinson 19, Xavier 18*. We did it!! What an awesome season from the Blue boys! Marist Blue’s final win was never in doubt, defeating St Edmund’s White 5/244 to 15/72. This win was set up not so much from our fielding and catching, but our bowling performance was stellar - of the 15 wickets, 10 were bowled. How about this for a list of firsts for the Blue boys: The Blue boys achieved the highest score of the year at 244, biggest win at 172, most wickets at 15. Jimmy got the first ‘6 for’ of the year with all wickets clean bowled. Best bowling figures for the entire MCCCC season from what we believe. Awesome Jimmy! Also, Riley got equal top score of the year at 30* and Jimmy smashed a massive 6 for the team’s first 6 of the season. This week’s Blue player of the match, goes to Oli Brew. Oli has been a pleasure to train and watch him improve, turn up week in week out and give 110%. A great season contribution Oli. Well done mate!! The Blue’s Coaches sung the boys praises after a superb finish in their well-deserved and undefeated season. Coach Scott Foley said: “The last few weeks looked like our season might have been dropping away, with a few close games, but boy did we finish with a bang! Scott added: “It’s been an amazing season from a great bunch of boys and an equally as wonderful parents.” Echoing Scott’s comments, Co-Coach Patrick Batch said how dedicated the boys have been throughout the season. Pat said: “We have enjoyed every bit seeing the boys committed to training, improving and wanting to play, and win of course, it’s been great to watch!” Marist Heat, 6/91, defeated by WCMCC Scorchers, 3/155. Batting: Patrick Bartlett 20, Thomas Currie 10. Bowling: Pascal Bell 1/9, Ryan Brown 1/14. Marist Hurricanes, 5/132, defeated CGS U10 Navy, 7/103. Batting: Nikolai Hill 21, Griffin Hyde 19, Daniel Belcher 13, Will Scholtens 11, Efrem Tijo 10. Bowling: Will Scholtens 1/18, Griffin Hyde 1/27. / Marist Renegades, 7/145, defeated CGS U11 Sky, 14/141 Batting: William Spencer 11, Logan Bray 10*, Nick Brennan 10. Bowling: Xander Denny 5/16, Finn Fulton 3/21. After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Grammar opened their innings in strong fashion with some classy scoring shots in the first few overs. The Renegades responded well with some fast, accurate bowling, claiming 14 wickets throughout Grammar’s innings. Alexander Denny bowled at a blistering pace, wreaking havoc for the opposition and claiming a massive 5-wicket haul in the process. Finn Fulton also bowled superbly, taking three wickets for the match. Max Spiller, Will Noordewier, Nick Brennan and Logan Bray all chipped in with one wicket each. William Spencer was dynamic in the field, claiming two catches and a run out as was Jonah Hamilton with a fantastic runout. Grammar set a solid 114 run total but the Renegades wickets saw them accumulate 56 runs before they even faced a ball. Some good bowling from Grammar made batting a challenge for the Renegades. However; it was pleasing to see every player contribute with runs. Top scorers were William Spencer (11), Logan Bray (10) and Nick Brennan (10). In the end, the Renegades secured the win with a very good team performance to finish an extremely enjoyable season of cricket. The steady improvement in the skill of all players has been a highlight of the season. Sincere thanks to team coaches George Denny and Owen Hardy for their dedication to the job and patience with the boys. Special thanks to our very generous and extremely organised team Manager, Mrs Kylie Denny. 4
Marist Light, 5/101, defeated by WCMCC Stars, 4/143. Batting: Jacob French 13, Will Crompton 12, Ragsajan Rajkumar 11, Adhavan Kunwar 10. Bowling: Will Crompton 2/9. Marist Royal, 7/110, defeated Eastlake Lions, 13/82. Batting: Henry Hyson 27, Harry Dawn 26, Tom Bolton 13, Levi Thornton 11. Bowling: Isaac Carey 4/10. Henry Hyson 3/16, Tom Bolton 2/10, Evan Conway 2/17. Marist Sixers, 14/91, defeated by Tuggeranong Kookas, 7/175. Bowling: Joe Imbriano 2/12. We had perfect late summer weather at Gowrie for the last match of the season for the Marist Sixers. Joe won the toss and elected to bowl and Marist did well in the field. Cam Smith took two excellent catches, scored a great runout and was an economical bowler. Joe mixed up his bowling between pace and some deceptive off-spin and was rewarded with hitting middle stump. Seth was, as always menacing in the field, with some great throws at the stumps which struck fear into the opposition batters, and some equally great dancing to keep warm as the evening cooled. Tom and Pavan also delivered some good economical bowling which prevented a bigger run chase. Nonetheless the other side had some heavy hitters and set a hefty target. Tom and Alex opened up the batting and both had solid knocks, Tom scored two long boundaries past the bowler and Alex got one to set the Sixers up for the run chase. All the boys batted well, and the chase was close, but the slow outfield and some precise bowling conspired to keep victory just out of reach. Special mention to Joe and Cam on their strong batting which saw boundaries for both and also Lucas and Aengus who bravely stared down the other side’s fastest bowler to close out the innings, coping a body shot or two but never flinching. It wasn’t the outcome the Sixers deserved after their first season, which has seen them all improve so much and bond as teammates. It was a privilege to coach the boys today and throughout the season and I am sure it is a sign of great things to come for all them. Marist Stars, 14/90, defeated by WCMCC Renegades, 6/149. Bowling: Noah Hamilton 2/9, Finn Duffy 2/12. Marist Strikers, 11/117, defeated by Tuggeranong Eagles, 8/125. Batting: Lachlan Carter 11. Bowling: Lachlan Carter 2/9, Jay Miller 2/12. 5
Under 11 Division 1 Marist, 10/193, defeated by WCMCC, 5/200 – grand final Batting: Archie Brown 40*, Sam Ryan 29, Kiaan Grover 27, Jacob Garrety 26. Bowling: Sam Ryan 2/27, Matthew Garrety 2/39, Kiaan Grover 1/20 On a foggy Saturday morning Marist took on Weston Creek. In front of a big crowd of family, friends, school classmates and sports celebrities the two undefeated teams of the 2020/21 Cricket season went head to head. Weston Creek won the toss and chose to bat. The Creekers got off to a good start with the bat, but the Marist boys struck back with 2 wickets a piece to Sam and Matthew. In what were very trying conditions, bowling with a wet ball. The contest swayed backwards and forwards, up and down. Catches to our wicket keepers, Harry and Archie rewarded the bowlers. While the runs were flowing for the Creekers, the Marist boys remained upbeat in the field, keeping up the chatter, walking in with the bowler, and backing up the stumps. All these one percenters helped keep the opposition to a total of 165. Having been set a challenging total, the Marist boys set off on the run chase in a positive mind set, Kiaan (27) and Danny (10) both hitting boundaries in their innings. Matty (12) helped chip away at the total. Archie came in played like Chris Lynn, scoring 40 not out, the highlight of his innings, crushing consecutive 6's, to loud applause from the crowd. Sam added a solid 29, including multiple boundaries and a 6. While the runs were flowing unfortunately we were leaking wickets, which kept pushing the run total away. As we edged closer, it felt that the total maybe beyond our reach. Having the envious task of batting in the last pair trying to finish off the run chase, Harry (14) and Jacob (26) hit multiple boundaries each. The two were superb, having the fans on the edge of their seats, both boys stealing runs, turning singles into 2's, and taking suicidal runs, but getting away with it. With the last two overs left to Jacob to face all the balls, he set about taking the target down. In what was Jacob’s best innings of the season, to come up just short was devastating for him, unfortunately Weston Creek managed to hang onto some great catches, which ultimately kept the score just out of reach. The game was played in great spirit, both teams demonstrated why they were the standout teams of the competition. As the game swayed to and fro, it was great to see the fighting Marist spirit, which kept getting the boys back in contention. Congratulations to Weston Creek. To my boys, we had a great season, I promise there will be premierships in the future. 6
Under 12 Division 1 Marist, 5/156, defeated Eastlake Demons, 93 – grand final. Batting: Jack Whalen 40*, Gabriel Louis 25* Bowling: Thomas Smith 3/13, Oliver Henderson 2/6 Division 2 Marist Royal, vs. Eastlake Juniors – grand final (no result due to rain) Under 13 Division 1 Marist, 2/111, defeated Wests Big Cats, 106 – T20 grand final, 10 March 2021 Batting: Lucas Louis 28*. Bowling: Josh Nuss 4/8, Aarush Patel 2/11, Nathan Kerr 2/15. The Marist team saved their best for last with a crushing 6 wicket win with 5 overs to play against the Wests Big Cats at Deakin to take the u13 Division 1 title in 2020-21. While they won in commanding style, making the decider was the hard part with majority of the players making their first tournament decider. Sachin and Josh, Marist Co-captains won the toss and sent the Wests Big Cats in on a unfamiliar but fast Deakin outfield. The decision paid immediate dividends with Aarush claiming the prize scalp of Suman in the opening over, caught behind by Noah diving forward for a brilliant catch. Wests looked to consolidate in the early stages however with Marist piling on the pressure they were 3/15 after the 6 over power play with Nathan chipping in with a wicket of the dangerous Vardarajan and Aarush claiming his second. With Wil and Sam continuing to dry up the runs, Nathan picked off his second wicket after the power play before Wests then set about upping the scoring rate and by drinks they had increased the score to a respectable 55 off 10 overs. Josh came into the attack after drinks which paid immediate dividends catching the edge for another sharp catch taken by keeper Brown. The Marist team continued to dry up the runs at one end and with Josh taking regular wickets at the other the Wests team finished with a respectable 106 runs. The Marist bowlers worked well as a group and were well supported in the field, most notably Sachin Weerasinghe providing relentless pressure with his efforts and skill in around the gully region. Aarush Patel demonstrated why he is the premier fast bowler in this age group with 2/11 off four and together with Nathan Kerr with 2/15 off 3 overs with his leg spin providing highlights. Co-captain 7
Josh Nuss provided the decisive spell with 4/8 of 2.3 overs with Wests having no answers to his accurate swing bowling. With a tricky total to chase, Marist opened with the classy Lucas Louis and big hitting Levi Belcher, or ‘beefy’ as he is better known to his teammates and they got the team off to a super impressive start. Beefy loaded up in the first over with two cracking boundaries to set the tone of the chase. He continued to hit the ball to all parts of the ground and had the Big Cats at his mercy before being dismissed for 21 off 15 balls with the score at 31 in the 4th over. Lucas and Josh then set about maintaining the rate with some classy shots and clever running between the wickets which has been a highlight for Marist this season. Lucas 28 (20) and Josh 20 (20) got the team into a formidable position both retiring with Marist at 1/60 in the 9th over. Enter the ever reliable Sachin Weerasinghe who set about guiding the team home as he has done all year with the bat. Together with Aarush 12 off (14) and Nathan 8 (6), the Marist team got home comfortably with 5 overs to spare. The Marist team continued to push themselves to raise the bar for T20 cricket this season in the u13 age group. Winning the title is recognition of both the individual talent and collective effort of all players in the team. Marist, 175, defeated Radford Heat, 138 – 30 over grand final, 13 March 2021. Batting: Lucas Louis 67*, Levi Belcher 29. Bowling: Josh Nuss 3/17, Lucas Louis 2/27. Skipper Lucas lost the toss and Marist were sent in by Radford on a wet Deakin Mint outfield. Marist elevated the aggressive Levi ‘beefy’ Belcher to partner Aarush and battle out the opening exchanges. Radford may have been left to rue the decision to bowl first as the Marist team got off to a super impressive start. The decision to elevate Beefy paid dividends and he continued where he left off in the midweek final, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground and had the Radford team looking for answers to combat the early high run rate. The introduction of spin in the 7th over brought success for Radford and Beefy was dismissed for 29 (23) with the score at 47. The Radford spinners then set about taking back control of the innings with some accurate bowling. The run rate slowed and Marist lost quick wickets with Aarush 15 (28), Josh 6 (15) and Sachin 0 (1) back in the sheds Marist limped to 4/64 at the 15 over drinks mark. The Radford team were full of confidence which steeled the resolve of Lucas and Wil Hyson as they set about resurrecting the Marist innings from its unfamiliar position. Wil and Lucas continued to play positive cricket and both retired off their allotted 30 balls, pushing the score over 100 into the 20th over and Marist were back on track. Nathan was joined by Noah Brown and they continued to push the score along to 127 before Nathan 9 (14) fell to the spin of Sudharsan in the 23rd over. Sam fell next ball and Radford again had their tails up with the score at 6/127 and the spinners back in control. Enter Lucas Louis back into the game, and together with the plucky keeper (Noah) he took back control of the game, proceeding to dispatch the bowling all around the ground at a good scoring rate. Noah fell (15 off 14) attempting to lift the rate with the score on 150 which then brought Wil Hyson back to the crease together with Lucas. The Marist boys continued to play positive cricket and pushed the score along to 175 before Will was bowled in the final over for an impressive 20 (34). The Marist team took the field full of confidence off the back of a good batting display. Radford needed to get off to a good start against the Marist pair of Beefy and Aarush. The opening exchanges were tight, and Radford got off to an expected circumspect start against some quality fast bowling as has been the case from Aarush all season. Nathan was brought into the attack early and together with Sammy Walsh continued to bowl tight which brought about the first wicket to Nathan in the 9th over with the score on 34. The Radford batsmen continued to get through to their 20 ball retirements however the run rate started to climb as Marist piled on the pressure through spinners Nathan and Lucas and well backed up by impressive fielding led by Sachin in the inner circle. Lucas got the dangerous Rathod out in the 13th over, and at drinks the match was evenly poised at 2/60. Needing over 7 an over to win the game, Lucas went for his medium pacers Wil and Josh after the break with immediate success. Wil continued to be tight with his 8
lines and Josh took wickets in the 19th and 21th over to leave the Radford team at 4/95 and 80 runs to get in the final 9 overs with their retired batsmen lined up to come back in. The runs started flow, with the score at 115 Lucas took the wicket of Boorer who had started to look dangerous. A direct hit from beefy in the next over left Radford in trouble at 6/118, needing over 50 in the last 5 overs. Levi got the big hitting Singh out caught by Lucas in the deep in the 26th over before Josh cleaned up the Radford innings with 2 overs to spare for a 37 run victory. The game had a number of highlights for the Marist team. In the field, Nathan was imposing in the early part of the innings to contain the run rate and take 1/15 off his allotted 5 overs. Lucas controlled the middle of the innings taking 2/27 off his 5 overs and Josh carried on from his impressive performance on Wednesday with 3/17 off his 5 overs to tie up the Radford innings. Noah had his best game of the season behind the stumps, with only 4 byes however looked sharp throughout the match. The boys have improved their fielding as the season progressed, most notably Sachin Weerasinghe setting the standard again in the Grand final with his efforts in the inner circle. With the bat, Beefy again got the team off to a great start and put the pressure back on the opposition. Will Hyson and Noah Brown played their best games of the season in our biggest match. Wil’s positive attitude to do what is right for the team shone through in the final as he played a significant hand in resurrecting our innings from a unfamiliar troubled start. However it was Lucas Louis who shone with the bat. His 67* under significant pressure showed why he is the premier batsmen in the competition to cap off what has been a fantastic season for him individually and guide his team to a win on Grand final day. The boys can be absolutely proud of the way they have played their cricket this season, which is no mean feat with most of them playing together in a club team for the first time and the introduction of a couple of boys from the junior school. Every single player contributed to the team’s success throughout the year, which stood us in good stead in the final when we had to dig deep and resurrect the batting innings and set a defendable total. Under 13 Division 2 Marist Royal, vs. Tuggeranong Eagles – grand final (no result due to rain) Under 14 Division 1 Marist, 6/116, defeated by Radford College, 4/117 – T20 grand final, 10 March 2021. Batting: Dylan Shillington 34 Bowling: Sachin Liyanage 2/12 U14’s T20 Grand Final - Marist 6/116 (Dylan Shillington 34 and Sam Smith 22) defeated by Radford 4/117 We gathered at Radford last Wednesday knowing that if we improved on our previous performance then victory would be ours. Sam won the toss and elected to bat a wise decision given that it is a final. Sam and Arnav opened the batting and got us a way to a solid start. Sam fell first well caught in the deep trying to force the pace. Arnav fell soon after and has been the case recently we lost a further two to be four down with plenty of overs to go. Tom and Dylan steadied the ship and got us back on track. The latter was extremely impressive hitting two towering sixes and helped us to post a competitive score of 116. Unlike last week Radford were more circumspect in the run chase. They punished poor deliveries and after putting on over 50 for the first wicket it took a good catch by Ashvin off Bede’s bowling to break the partnership. Alex and Noah then combined to dismiss their best batsman for 1. Two quick wickets and we were back in the match. Our spinners then began to weave their web as dot balls started to build. Sachin dismissed the next two batsman and the game was on a knife’s edge. Unfortunately this was as close as we got and they got the winning runs in the final over. Whilst the result was not what we wanted we knew there was improvement in this team. Radford had played to their best and this was all they had. It is not often in sport you get the opportunity for revenge but playing the same team three days later we felt that if we did the small things right we could turn the tables. 9
Marist, 6/157, defeated Radford College, 8/156 – 30 over grand final, 13 March 2021. Batting: Dylan Shillington 52*, Sam Smith 39*, Bede Cuddihy 26*. Bowling: Arnav Gupta 2/23, Dylan Shillington 2/28. We gathered again at Radford on Saturday for the 30 over grand final looking for revenge. Coach Paul pulled off a masterstroke by getting the boys together on Friday afternoon. An opportunity for the boys to talk about what lay ahead and come up with some plans. The boys felt this was the best thing to have done before the grand final. Radford won the toss and on this occasion elected to bat in cool conditions. Due to the overnight fog the ground was heavy and the President had a feeling that it was a good toss to lose. Bowling was going to be tricky but once the ground dried out it could work to the side batting second advantage and how profound this proved to be. Unlike Wednesday’s game we broke through in the second over an early wicket well caught by Noah off Sam Smith’s bowling. Their two best batsmen then went about a repair mission and batted through to the drinks break. It was this break that worked in Marist’s favour as we captured three wickets very quickly. The first two were catches one by Ashvin and a spectacular effort by Alex whilst the third was a brilliant piece of bowling from Arnav. Radford’s batsman put together a useful partnership before two quick wickets fell one being a catch to Sam H off Bede’s bowling and the second bowled by Sam H. At 6/109 we thought there was a good chance of dismissing them for under 120. Some useful hitting by their number 6 got them over 120. When the captain called Dylan back for one final push the result was instantaneous with two wickets in two balls. The first a sharp catch at deep cover by Sam H and the next one a beautiful yorker which rattled the timber. Radford were then 8/129. A late flurry from their 9 and 10 got them to 156. Was this going to be enough? Chasing has always been this team’s Achilles heel. After a solid start once again we lost wickets in clumps with Sachin out leg before, Will run out and Alex well caught a deep mid wickets we were three down in the blink of eye. With wickets falling around him Sam Smith remained resolute and needed someone to help drive the innings. This ally was Dylan and boy what an innings he played. After taking his time he began to flay the ball to all parts of the ground. He did not lose momentum when Sam retired for a great captain’s innings. This might not have been his top score it would be up there as one of his best. Dylan went on to register his maiden 50 for Marist. Once again we lost a couple of quick wickets. With the flurry of wickets Bede quietly went about his work building a match winning innings. Noah came to the crease with less than a run a ball required. The two of them batted sensibly and when Noah hit a four off the first ball of the final over victory was Marist. How sweet it is. What a season it was and what a team we have. One loss from 11 T20 games and undefeated in the 30 over format. (13 wins.) Full credit goes to Aruna and Paul for the way they coached the boys and got them thinking about their cricket. Everyone got a go and have become better cricketers for it. A huge shout out to all our scorers during the season. There are too numerous to name. Thank you to the parents for supporting the boys this season. Without your support we would not have achieved what we achieved. Finally a big shout out to Nick Smith and the committee for their work. On behalf of the U14 age group Nick take a bow for the hard work you have done for the team without it we would not have reaped the benefits and got to where we got this season. Division 2 Marist Blue, 4/112, defeated St Edmunds College, 3/105 -T20 grand final, 10 March 2021 Batting: Tejas Nambissan 28*, Kirby Jones 28. Marist Blue faced St Eddy's in the Grand Final of the T20 tournament. Eddy's won the toss and elected to bat on an afternoon suited to runs on a fast, but large ground at Eddys. The bowling from Leo and Theo started tight, with Eddy's holding their wickets, but unable to get any big shots away. The pressure eventually told with Omkar securing a bowled (played on) off an excellent balled pitched up outside offstump. The boys kept continued to keep it fairly tight through the middle overs with Owen and Jack bowling tightly and Tejas taking a beautiful catch from a nicely pitched up delivery off Owen and Jack securing another wicket, LBW. 10
Although leaking some boundaries towards the end of the innings, Tejas and Leo kept the bowling fairly tight, a couple of dropped catches not helping. Eventually Eddy's innings was closed at 3-105 – a strong total. Sam (23 no) and Tejas (28 no) started the large run chase with an excellent partnership of 56 from 10 overs, that featured excellent running between the wickets for ones and twos, with the occasional boundary. With their retirement, Kirby (28) took over with some lusty hitting, well partnered by Alex (4) and Joe (2) to keep the scoring moving along nicely. Following a couple of wickets, Spence (14 no) launched into some beautiful straight driving, while Ross was unlucky, his cover drive just falling into Eddy's hands. Theo (6 no) chipped in for the last two overs with Spence for some quick ones and twos to seal victory for Marist. A great win for the boys. The Preamble to the Laws of Cricket stresses that the game ‘should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game’. Participants, players and officials alike, must conduct themselves, at all times, in accordance with the Laws of Cricket and the ACTCA Junior Council Competition Rules. In the words of Donald Bradman: “it is the responsibility of all those that play the game (the custodians) to leave the game in a better state than when they first became involved.” Coaches and managers of the younger age teams should reinforce this aspect of the game. No smoking or drinking Coaches and managers should not smoke or drink alcohol at games or during training. Parents are requested not to drink while a match is in progress. Parents may also raise such concerns with the Committee. Parents must ensure boys are picked up on time, taking into account possible early finishes and wet weather, so that players and coaches/managers are not left waiting for long periods for parents to arrive.
