Spring / Summer Autumn / Winter
High protein food and vitamins High energy food, high fat or
e.g. good seed mixes, sunflower oil content e.g. peanuts, suet,
seeds, fruit, mealworms sunflower seeds
Black sunflower seed
Black sunflower seed has thinner husks than striped seed, making it more
accessible to garden birds. High in fats and protein, this make an ideal all year
round feed for finches and tits.
Sunflower hearts
De-husked sunflower seed. More accessible to a wider variety of garden birds,
and does not leave so much mess under the feeder/bird table. A real favourite
with garden birds.
Seed mixes
Seed mixes come in a vast range, differing in content and quality. Cheaper
mixes have more cereal and less variety of ingredients. Better quality mixes
have a larger range of ingredients and attract a wider variety of birds. Look for
the Calvita® Vitamin Enriched packs for added nutrients.
Peanuts
High in oils and fats, ideal autumn and winter feed. Only buy good quality
peanuts as poor quality may be contaminated by a poison (Aflatoxin). Feed in
mesh feeders so that young birds cannot take the nut whole and risk choking.
Nyjer seed
Sometimes sold as “thistle seed”, nyjer (or nyger) seed is rich in oil and protein,
ideal for small birds and a favourite of goldfinches. Good for all year round
feeding in specialised nyjer feeders.
Mealworms
Not actually worms, but a dried beetle larvae. High in protein and therefore
ideal for spring and summer feeding, especially for soft billed birds such as
robins, wagtails, thrushes etc. They can be soaked and rehydrated to feed to
young birds.
Suet and fat balls
Excellent autumn and winter feed, providing birds with energy fuel to maintain
warmth during the cold months. Some fat balls have added seed, fruit or
mealworms.
