Gut Health and Relapse in Alcoholics Research suggests that bacteria in the gut may play a role in alcohol addiction and the likelihood of relapse after rehab. Alcohol addiction is often associated with an imbalance in the intestinal flora. One study found that 26 out of 60 alcoholics suffered from leaky gut syndrome and had a low amount of a specific intestinal bacteria, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Leaky gut syndrome is linked to inflammation of the gut and diseases like Crohn’s disease, food allergies, asthma and arthritis. After 19 days without alcohol the 26 alcoholics with leaky gut still scored high on tests that measured depression, anxiety, and alcohol cravings. In contrast, the remaining 34 subjects with normal gut flora recovered faster, measuring lower on the same tests. Their scores decreased to levels comparable with a control group who didn’t have a drinking problem.[i] [i] Leclercq S, Matamoros S, Cani PD et al. Intestinal permeability, gut-bacterial dysbiosis, and behavioral markers of alcohol- dependence severity. Proc Nat Acad Sci USA vol III no. 42. Sept 15, 2014
Mental Illness and Gut Dysbiosis Mental illness such as bipolar, depression, anxiety, and psychotic disorders are not only caused by trauma, physical or emotional stress, nutritional deficit, infection, hormonal imbalance and/or genetic susceptibility, but can be inflammatory conditions related to the function of the immune system and the health of the gut.[ii] [iii] [iv] Social and psychological stressors affect not only the immune system, but also the bacterial composition of the gut, favoring the growth of species that promote inflammation.[v] These inflammatory species have a direct connection with the brain via the neurotransmitters they produce and the vagus nerve receptors in the gut.[vi] The vagus nerve seems to be capable of differentiating between harmless and potentially harmful bacteria, even when there is no inflammation, and vagal pathways can send signals to the brain that can induce either anxiety-producing or calming effects. Why do we need to be aware? Aphorism 260 . “Hence the careful investigation into such obstacles to cure is so much the more necessary in the case of patients affected by chronic diseases, as their diseases are usually aggravated by such noxious influences and other disease causing errors in the diet and regimen, which often pass unnoticed.”
A Sobering Statistic 3-6 months after inpatient recovery treatment 64% relapse.
Addiction is a a behavioral problem that has a physical component: There exists a physical deficiency/ malfunctioning of neurotransmitters in the brain which causes an unsatisfiable craving. The brain is supplied with neurotransmittors (up to 90% of them) by a balanced microbiome which exists in the Gut. The microbiome becomes imbalanced by poor diet, toxic chemicals of all types, resulting in reduced neurotransmittor production/functioning. Due to the imbalance, “bad” bacteria causes cravings for foods which support the addictive cycle. Toxins especially, Glyphosate, impair the production of the amino acids glycine. Without glycine Collagen is not adequately produced. Collagen contains glutamate- a necessary neurotransmittor/amino acid. As the most abundant protein in the body, its lack will impair joint, gut, connective tissue, hair skin and a multitude of other functions of the body. Leaky gut is a direct result of collagen deficiency. The hydrogen molecule of glycine in layman’s terms is responsible for hydration. Which is why we see symptoms of aging such as wrinkles and loose skin, thinning hair, certain vascular conditions and joint complaints such as arthritis among addicts.
. We have a variety of possible circumstances. 1. The poor diet may be the cause of the client’s problem. 2. Because the imbalanced microbiome is a war between “good” and “bad” bacteria, there is a consequence of rebalancing when removing some of the most offending foods. The state of detoxification results in a rapid elimination of irritating foods may cause so much trouble that no progress can be made, and new, very uncomfortable symptoms arise, interfering with client compliance or improvement . 3. The condition of inflammation and imbalance gut may be so severe that we are dealing with a malnourished patient. 4. A leaky gut is like a bowl with cracks in it, if we try to fill it up with out sealing the cracks, we will make little progress. 5. The behavior/cravings/inability to stay with a therapeutic diet make following a new diet nearly impossible, but not healing the gut may present a condition of continual auto intoxication that the gut and pathogenic by products of “bad bacteria” die off become a maintaining cause. No matter how much they do, we do, their own bodies are making them continually sick.
Case Examples Sally B. 55 yrs old Former Alcoholic ; In recovery 7 years. Sx: Gut disbiosis: bloating, food sensitivities, constant muscle and joint achiness, extremely wrinkled face, chichis uncharacteristic of family tendencies.Gum inflammation and pain at root. Somewhat anxious, past child abuse and resistance to expressing feelings. Previous Remedies: Staphysagria, Natrum Muriaticum - great strides and effective healing of many symptoms. Remaining complaints seem to be related to gut permeability. Cell salts given alongside constitutional care for connective tissue concerns (pain) that seem to have also relieved the signs of leaky gut and disbiosis. Calc fluor, Calc phos, Ferrum phos, Kali phos, Mag phos , Nat phos, Silica The phosphates are avail in combination then add the silica and calc fluor
Until the gut is healed everyone would behave as an addict. ! Dopamine ! Serotonin ! Opiate/Morphine effects of Wheat
Addictive behaviors related to Dopamine Deprivation • Pornography • Pretty women • Waiting till the last minute to do things • Cigarettes Dopamine is a precursor to testosterone. It feels good when dopamine courses through our veins! Copyright 2020 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 10
Dopamine • Dopamine : Natural ways to Increase Dopamine Levels • Dopamine is an excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter, depending on the dopamine receptor it binds to. It is derived from the amino acid tyrosine. Dopamine is the precursor to norepinephrine and epinephrine, which are all catecholamines. The function of dopamine is diverse but plays a large role in the pleasure/reward pathway (addiction and thrills), memory, and motor control. Dopamine, like norepinephrine and epinephrine, is stored in vesicles in the axon terminal. • Symptoms of Dopamine Deficiency • Low dopamine levels can cause depression, loss of motor control, loss of satisfaction, addictions, cravings, compulsions, low sex drive, poor attention and focus. When dopamine levels are elevated symptoms may manifest in the form of anxiety, paranoia, or hyperactivity. Copyright 2020 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 11
Serontonin Deprivation: What we crave – what we can eat instead • Carbohydrates and Fats 1) Free Range Turkey 2) Flaxseed/ Flaxseed oil 3) Buckwheat 4) Wild Fish and Sea food 5) Whey protein 6) Bananas 7) High quality Eggs 8) Sour Cherries 9) Free Range Beef 10) Dark Chocolate Copyright 2020 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 12
Signs of deficiency-Dopamine Low dopamine levels • can cause depression • loss of motor control • loss of satisfaction • addictions • cravings • compulsions • low sex drive • poor attention and focus Elevated Dopamine levels: • anxiety • paranoia • hyperactivity Copyright 2020 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 13
Increasing Dopamine through Diet • Foods that increase Dopamine levels • Food sources of dopamine increasing tyrosine include almonds, avocados, bananas, dairy products, lima beans, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds. • Dopamine is easily oxidized. Foods that are rich in antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables may help protect dopamine-using neurons from free radical damage. Many healthcare professionals recommend supplementing with vitamins C, vitamin E, and other antioxidants. What to avoid • Foods such as sugar, saturated fats, cholesterol, and refined foods interfere with proper brain function and can cause low dopamine. Consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol should also be reduced because they can clog the arteries to the brain, heart, and other organs. • Caffeine must also be avoided by persons with depression. Caffeine is a stimulant which initially speeds up neurotransmission, raises the amount of serotonin, and temporarily elevates mood. Copyright 2020 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 14
Producing enough GABA • Drugs do not produce more GABA While drugs alter or potentiate the GABA receptor, they do not add any GABA to the system. Drugs rely on a sufficient supply of endogenous GABA in the brain to function properly. • However, due to factors like diet, leaky gut, stress, and genetics, a healthy supply of GABA may not be available. • Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-essential amino acid formed from glutamic acid with the help of vitamin B6. • GABA is found in almost every region of brain. Case Example Dopamine Deprivation after Benzodiazepine Use Bill T , 66 14 years of benzodiazepine use, addictions: Porn, cigarettes, alcohol Symptom picture: acute gut cramping and diarrhea after successfully coming off Benzos, he still complains of digestive issues, severely limited diet, as “everything” bothers him, the only thing that helps is watching porn- gives him a “relief” and distraction from his pains. Still smokes Constitutional remedies which helped : Ars Alb. several potencies and Carcinosin . After one year of treatment and slow withdrawal from Mertazapine, the persistence of his coping mechanism seems to be related to deficient dopamine production. RX: Dysentery Co 30c , 200c 3 months total , change to diet- adding dopamine foods, aromatherapy black pepper when he wants to smoke, GABA supplementation -Carlson’s Mellow mood (new name : totally Zen). Diarrhea relieved and craving for porn eliminated. Still smoking occasionally but black pepper helps when he craves it or wants to smoke less.

How to know if what your are seeing are Symptoms of Leaky Gut and/or Gluten Intolerance 1. Digestive issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and even constipation. 2. KeratosisPilaris, (also known as 'chicken skin' on the back of your arms). This tends be as a result of a fatty acid deficiency and vitamin A deficiency secondary to fat-malabsorption caused by gluten damaging the gut. 3. Fatigue, brain fog or feeling tired after eating a meal that contains gluten. 4. Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative colitis, Lupus, Psoriasis, Scleroderma or Multiple sclerosis. 5. Dizziness or feeling of being off balance. 6. Hormone imbalances such as PMS, PCOS or unexplained infertility. 7. Migraine headaches. 8. Chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia. Autoimmune diseases: Hashimoto's, lupus, celiac, rheumatoid arthritis. 9. Inflammation, swelling or pain in your joints such as fingers, knees or hips. 10. Mood issues such as anxiety, depression, mood swings and ADD 11. Seasonal allergies or asthma. 12. Diagnosis of candida overgrowth. 13. Food allergies or food intolerances. . Copyright 2020 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 20

Serotonin – or the Ben and Jerry Deficiency • Serotonin is a neurotransmitter (brain chemical) that is involved in many vital body functions and is very important in the regulation of mood and sleep. Low levels of this neurotransmitter can lead to increased incidences of aggressive behavior and increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. • Even more worryingly is that scientists have found that ‘lower serotonin function and impulsive/aggressive traits are associated with suicidal acts, including completed suicide.’ Copyright 2020 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 22
Habits & Supplements • Talking, any type for 20 minutes produces Serotonin. • Serotonin is a precursor to estrogen. – Women like talk therapy more than men do • 5HTP • Saturated Fats, Coconut oil, flax oil, deep water fish oil, Cod liver oil (fermented is best) Copyright 2020 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 23
Seeing any of these conditions in practice that do not respond to constitutional care- we must ask our selves: Is my client suffering from malnutrition brought on by Leaky Gut?
So let's review symptoms and diseases that are related to leaky gut.
Why Wheat and Gluten contribute to Malnutrition.

Cravings for wheat or the high? 1. The readily-digested starch amylopectin A, which is highly disruptive to blood sugar levels is predominant in wheat. 2. The lectin (toxin) in wheat known as ‘wheat germ agglutinin’(WGA) can cause inflammation in the gut and elsewhere. 3. Gliadin – a component of gluten in wheat which has, among other things, drug-like effects. Copyright 2015 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, 2016/6/25 CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 30
Case example- Cannabis use 30 years Obesity, constant wheat cravings, nausea, vomitting, psychosis, paranoia, violent Franco R. Can “quit” weed when ever he wants. Large belly, anxiety, porn addiction, complains of being disrespected. Veratrum Album in ascending potencies after lycopodium and nux vomica. Eats 2 loaves of bread a day. Some relief after Verat. Change of diet, supplementing with serotonin promoting foods, bowel nosode : Dysnetery Co, 2 months followed by 3 months of constitutional care with Lycopodium , then 2 months of Morgan Gaertner Good result. Improved cravings, lost 40 pounds, and reduced cannabis use
Now Add Glyphosate Glyphosate as we find in Round Up, is essentially a drying agent. It is used to help destroy the stalks etc during harvesting in order to prepare the land for replanting . It is sprayed on nearly all non organic (“non gmo” is not enough protection) : Soy, Corn, Wheat, Chick peas, Oats, Lentils. So these foods will dry us out as well and destroy our microbiome and the collagen in or bodies. Glyphosate adds super gut destroying powers to what are considered “healthy” foods.
Repertorization for Wheat intolerances do not touch these cases. It is not the farinaceous foods that are the problem, it is the poison that they bring to our tables and the important nutrients now missing from our diet that they once provided. Approach: treat for the poison Treat for the damage to the organ that no longer has it’s integrity Treat for disordered bowel. What would Sam Say? Aphorism 125 During all the time the experiment lasts the diet must be strictly regulated; it should be as much as possible destitute of spices, of a purely nutritious and simple character, green vegetable, (1) roots and all salads and herb soups (which, even when most carefully prepared, possess some disturbing medicinal qualities) should be avoided. The drinks are to be those usually partaken of, as little stimulating as possible. (2) (1) Young green peas, green French beans, ["boiled potatoes" in the Sixth Edition] and in all cases carrots are allowable, as the least medicinal vegetables. (2) The subject of experiment must either be not in the habit of taking pure wine, brandy, coffee or tea, or he must have totally abstained for a considerable time previously from the use of these unjurious beverages, some of which are stimulating, others medicinal.

Probiotic Foods vs. Supplements • It was recently reported that sauerkraut topped the charts of probiotics, surpassing that of over-the -counter probiotics purchased. • Dr. Mercola of mercola.com sent his sauerkraut off to a lab and reported the findings of probiotics saying, – “We had it analyzed. We found in a 4-6 ounce serving of the fermented vegetables there were literally ten trillion bacteria.” – That means 2 ounces of home fermented sauerkraut had more probiotics than a bottle of 100 count probiotic capsules. – Translated this means one 16 ounce of sauerkraut is equal to 8 bottles of probiotics. • Copyright 2015 Lise M.Battaglia, CCH, 2016/6/25 CGP www.LiseBattaglia.com 41
