We got him in the West Village after brunch one day. It wasn’t planned. But once we met him it just felt SO right. Anything special or unusual about your pet? His huge personality for such a tiny body. He is SO brave. His size doesn’t hold him back from anything. What do you like best about your pet? When you talk to him, he tilts his head like he knows exactly what you’re saying. His favorite words are chicken, dinner and hungry. If you want to take a picture of him , just say one of those words, and he will stare at you with his ears up and his head tilted. How spoiled are your pets? Most people would say that Ricky is very spoiled. He has a clothing rack in our house. He’s been everywhere from the Hamptons to Palm Beach to the Caribbean. Our doormen in Tribeca said they want to come back in their next life as Ricky. However, the truth is that we are the ones who feel truly spoiled. We couldn’t have ever dreamed of a better dog and everyone who meets him loves him. 8 WESTFIELD LOCAL + : westfieldlocalnj OCTOBER 2021 OCTOBER 2021 + : westfieldlocalnj WESTFIELD LOCAL 9
local athletes Photography provided by Varsity Vantage WESTFIELD HIGH SCHOOL FIELD HOCKEY After having our season cut short last year, the girls were eager to get back on the field. We have 2 returning varsity starters which might be a concern some years, but this season in particular we have a team consisting of multi-sport athletes, which is a huge advantage. Their athleticism has strengthened our lineup and has given us depth because they are willing to adapt and can play multiple positions. Not only that, we are a young team who is driven and ready to prove themselves on the field. I’m confident they will be a competitive team this season. I saw it first hand at our game vs. Scotch Plains-Fanwood. We were down 0-2, tied the game in the 4th quarter, and won in overtime! They didn’t give up and I am incredibly proud of the team. The future is bright! — Coach Varhley 10 WESTFIELD LOCAL + : westfieldlocalnj OCTOBER 2021 OCTOBER 2021 + : westfieldlocalnj WESTFIELD LOCAL 11
westfield high news Senior Year: A Reflection on Our Time in Westfield BY VIVIAN JECKELL AND MOLLY REILLY, Staff, Optic Magazine 2 Westfieldhandyman.com Senior year is full of “lasts.” Last school picture, last sports season, last time in class with kids we’ve known our whole lives. However, we are gearing up for quite a few firsts as well. The class of 2022 is just beginning the next stage of our lives, and for a lot of people, that next stage is pursuing higher education. Year Cabinetry & Carpentry Our college applications take up the majority of our time during our senior year, and a large portion of these applications requires reflection on our academic careers. This has forced us to fondly recall memories from even our middle school years Porches & Decks Warranty that have started friendships or sparked an interest in a new area of study. While these college applications are demanding, Plaster & Paint they let us reminisce and even brag a little about everything we have accomplished and lived through these past seventeen All Repairs years in Westfield. Foundations & Stucco We are so lucky to live in a town that has such a good public school system and that affords us so many opportunities to become Doors & Moulding the best versions of ourselves. We are both students of the excellent journalism program at WHS, which produces interesting and Gerard E. Kelly highly awarded reporting in both its publications, Hi’s Eye and Optic Magazine. These publications are uncensored and student- Power Wash & Clean Out run, which is something unique to our school. Participating in this excellent program has made us passionate about news coverage, and has even inspired us to pursue Journalism beyond our high school careers. Text/Call 908-209-0104 We are also both Advanced Placement (AP) students, which means that we take classes designed by the College Board to offer a college-level course in the chosen subject. These classes are often difficult and require a great deal of work in order to succeed. Part of the AP curriculum is preparation for a standardized exam at the end of the year. A passing grade on these exams allows www.westfieldhandyman.com students to get college credit for their hard work, which gives them a leg up both academically and financially. WHS offers dozens of AP courses, something that many schools do not. This is extremely important to students, not only fostering the work ethic needed for higher levels of study but also empowering them to begin their college education at an advantage to others. Of course, knowing that we are leaving Westfield in a year makes us nostalgic for the non-academic parts of our time here too. We will make each trip to the farmers market, each train we catch at the station and each debate over which town pizza place is the best a little more mindful and a little more grateful.
