M ore than 1,300 young children and their parents were treated to a fun-filled evening of engaging role-play activities, bonding and learning at the West Coast GRC and Pioneer Family Life Champion representatives were also there to engage participants with a series of family-friendly mini games and encourage inter-generational conversations and Constituency Family Day 2019 held on Saturday, 28 Sep 2019, at understanding. Through family and light-hearted learning oriented activities like these, the organiser hoped that the children would walk away with a stronger lifelong passion for learning that would also inspire them to embrace responsibility, creativity and independence through play. The 600-metre stretch of ‘beautified’ canal between AYE and West Coast Road is an initiative under the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme to transform drains, canals and waterways in Singapore into beautiful, vibrant and clean rivers, lakes and streams that integrate with the surrounding developments and scenic jogging paths. West Coast GRC MP S. Iswaran announced the completion of the upgrading works at a National Day celebration on August 31, 2019. Mr Iswaran, who is also the Minister for Communications and Information, said national water agency PUB had initially wanted to just deepen the canal after flash floods in September 2013 caused the AYE to be closed temporarily. But after discussions, Mr Iswaran said, “we decided to make it into an active, beautiful and clean water project. So now we have a lot of facilities here, it is a very beautiful environment.” 3

The completion of the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) initiative was celebrated at a ceremony on 21 Sep 2019, where Mr Patrick Tay, BBM thanked all residents for their patience and understanding when construction works were being carried out. Mr Tay said: “New facilities added to your precinct include a covered multi-purpose court, jogging track and fitness corners, aimed to promote a healthier lifestyle and to serve as venues for residents to interact and make new friendships. Extended awnings have been constructed to provide additional walking space and shelter to avoid heavy rain and scorching sun. Also, with the increasing numbers of bicycles in your precinct, more bicycle sheds have been provided. Other new and upgraded facilities include a community hall, covered walkways, drop-off porch, barrier-free access ramp, children’s playgrounds, barbeque corner, community garden and precinct marker. “I hope that all these improvements works have benefited all of you and that you can continue to play a part in taking good care of these facilities.” NRP enhances Boon Lay Drive neighbourhood 5

Ayer Rajah Diary Over 8,000 residents joined National Day Street Party T he streets in Pandan Gardens were filled ‘to the brim’ with over 8,000 people on 3 August 2019 with one common objective: to celebrate Singapore’s National Day. The festivities started off with the National Day Observance Ceremony, with a parade of uniformed groups and a percussion band from Commonwealth Secondary School. There was the flag flypast, carried by drones, during the flag raising ceremony and singing of the National Anthem. It was the third year in a row since its inaugural year in 2017 that Ayer Rajah’s National Day Street Party was held at Pandan Gardens, in front of Ayer Rajah Community Club. The road was lined with carnival rides and inflatables, complete with roving entertainers and Marvel super-hero characters and non-stop stage performances. Pioneer Diary Mooncakes and lanterns at Mid-autumn B lk 640 Hard Court was transformed into a colourful festival hall with its Mid-Autumn Festival on 14 Sep 2019. West Coast Diary Rolling good tribute to Merdeka Generation T he contributions to our nation-building by the Merdeka Generation (MG) were huge. To emphasise their importance to the nation, West Coast division held the “Rolling Good Times – A Tribute to the Merdeka Generation” on 27 July 2019 at Nan Hua Primary School with a turn out of 5,000 MG residents and their families.
