NOVEMBER 2021 Hirsch Arts & Wellness Programs Welcome to Hirsch Wellness! We are the only cancer support non-profit in the Piedmont Triad providing FREE of charge Healing Arts and Wellness programs for cancer patients in treatment, survivors and their caregivers. Our caring community empowers participants to create, express and celebrate life with monthly programs to enhance emotional and physical well-being. Hirsch is a safe place where men and women rely on group support and personal growth opportunities to bring hope and healing through the cancer journey and beyond. Wednesday Perspectives: An Intro to Drawing (online) with Alex Gaal Nov. 3 Learn the basics of drawing and point perspective by using lines creating the illusion of space on paper and 1-2:30pm achieve a realistic perspective in your art. Thursday Awakened Heart, Awakened Mind (online) with Ash Poirier Nov. 4 Join Ash Poirier for this evening session designed to introduce calm, reduce stress, improve sleep, instill 6-7:30pm happiness, and offer tools for emotional well-being and self care. Zentangle (online) with Michele Rieder Friday Nov. 5 Zentangling is the art of making simple marks on paper, that emerge into beautiful patterns and designs, while bringing a heightened state of calm, and relaxation for mind body and spirit! Monday Sketching with a Brush with Bob (online) with Bob Nordbruch Nov. 8 Join Bob in his home studio as he creates an original work of art and shares his inspiration for applying paint 1-2:00pm to canvas using his spontaneous style and trademark brilliant colorful palette. Registration is required. Creative Immersion (online) with Krystal Hart Tuesday Nov. 9 Join artist Krystal Hart and experience the art of self-expressive “Creative Play”. Learn to use different art materials on this journey to discover meaning and beauty within the abstract work you create. Register by 1-2:30pm October 26th, 5pm for Art Supplies to be mailed. Tuesday Reiki Exploration Continued (online) with Dr. Bev Vaughn Nov. 9 In this continuing series, we will review symbols including the distance symbol and do a placement. We will 6:30-8pm also work on how to give a Reiki session to someone and to yourself. Registration is required. What Nature Knows: A Journal Writing Class (online) with Catherine Crowder and Molly Haile Wednesday In this monthly series, we will observe, sketch, write, and reflect and learn more about birds, trees, plants, Nov.10 seasonal cycles, and other aspects of nature from gardening instructor and horticultural therapist Cat Crowder. Writer Molly Haile will share short selections on the same topic from beloved writers of nature 12-2pm along with writing exercises for recording our own observations and reflections about nature—and our lives. We will focus on a floral theme and use copies of famous floral art for 1-2:30pm even more inspiration! Register by October 28th, 5pm for Art Supplies to be mailed. Shakespeare Scene Work (online) with Hayley Greenstreet Friday Nov. 12 Activate your inner performer and look at Shakespeare from the other side! Join the fun and learn some basic tools, exercise your imagination, and begin to develop characters and scenes from classic works. Local teaching 1:30-3:30pm artist Hayley Greenstreet will guide us in exploring Shakespeare. Registration is required. Open Studio (online) with Bob Nordbruch Wednesday Nov. 17 Open Studio is our way of staying connected, sharing creative projects, and learning new techniques from our featured artists. Gain inspiration and creative lessons from fine artist Bob Nordbruch. Registration is 1-2pm required. Paper Quilling Holiday Ornaments (online) with Mavis Liggett Friday Nov. 19 Paper Quilling or Filigree is a relaxing, meditative art form of twisting small strips of paper into unique and beautiful 3-dimensional shapes, combining color and pattern to create a larger mosaic. Enjoy creating a 1-3pm lovely quilled holiday ornament. Register by October 5th, 5pm for Art Supplies to be mailed. Releasing the Tension in the Abdomen and Freeing the Lower Back (online) with Terry Brown Friday Nov. 19 Using asana and pranayama, we will engage in a practice sequence that teaches us how to release tension in the abdominal muscles, the pelvic floor, and the diaphragm. As these areas relax, the breath can be directed 6-7pm to move into the lower back and relax the areas that we hold tightly. All Levels. Registration is required. Tuesday Reiki Holy Fire III Meditation (online) with Dr. Bev Vaughn Nov. 23 Experience a guided relaxing Reiki Holy Fire meditation to get calm before the Thanksgiving Holiday rush. No 6:30-7:15pm previous class instruction is needed. Registration is required. Paste Paper Part I (online) with Susanne Baker Saturday Nov. 27 Experience one of the oldest methods of decorating paper. Often referred to as grown-up finger painting, paste paper is paper patterned with a mix of paste and color. In Part 1 we will make the papers to be used to 2-3:30pm make holiday pop up cards in Part 2. Register by November 12th, 5pm for Art Supplies to be mailed. Masu Boxes…or Nesting Origami Boxes (online) with Mary Beth Boone Monday Masu boxes are a delight to design, fold and make. Explore the Japanese tradition of origami structure and Nov. 29 decorate papers with patterns and designs to fold and make your own origami structure. Following, we 1-2:30pm will engage in a brief writing exercise and create special words to place in our finished boxes. Register by November 15th, 5pm for Art Supplies to be mailed. Tuesday Stitch Club Open Studio (online) with Jacqui Mehring & Vanessa McCormick Nov. 30 Join fiber artists Jacqui Mehring and Vanessa McCormick and bring your stitch, fiber and textile projects 1-2:30pm while enjoying inspiring conversation and time to receive technical advice if needed! This restorative class will introduce you to supported, relaxing postures that open the Dec. 10 body and release tension. Pop-Up Cards Part 2 (online) with Susanne Baker Saturday Part 2: Using the paste paper you made in the last session, we will learn the basic techniques of pop-ups and Dec. 11 incorporate your one-of-a-kind designs into a small book. Inspired by the hit show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” we will learn and play Dec. 15 through a series of knee-slapping improvisation games and activities. From classic games like “Scenes From a 1-3pm Hat” to “The Dating Game”, participants will engage in a fully virtual short-form improv set.
