Subjects Leading onto Senior Cycle • JC Home Economics becomes LC Social & Scientific. A good and interested student could take LC Social & Scientific without having done JC Home Economics. • It would be possible for a student to take L.C Art without JC Art. • Business and Economics may be studied at LC without having done JC Business Studies but Accounting would be v difficult to take up. • Practical Subjects: a student who has not taken Wood Technology/ Engineering / Graphics for JC would find the corresponding LC practical subjects very difficult. • French / Spanish: May take forward to Leaving Cert only if studied at JC.
Factors to be considered. Interest ➢ Interest: Choose the subjects you like best. ➢ Ability/Aptitude. ➢ Necessary for course /career? Work ➢ Desirable for a course /career? Motivation Hard
How Parents can help • Encourage thought, provide support • Ask questions about how they like to learn new things? • Be aware of good and bad reasons for choosing a subject (e.g. friends, teacher)
Reflect . . . Think about your Son/Daughter’s interests and how they learn. Have them ask themselves the following questions: • Do I enjoy this subject? • Do my strengths/talents/attributes reflect this subject? • Am I choosing because of friends/teachers? • Will I be motivated to achieve ? • Is there a chance I might need it for further study/career? • Am I keeping my options open?

Advice on Subject Choice ➢Do the research – this is hugely important ➢Be realistic about ability and possible future course and career choice ➢Closing date for options is Wednesday 29th 2019 ➢Once Y2 begins, students should try and stick with a subject and give it their best as too much uncertainty and indecision may be detrimental in the long term
