First Work Updates SSM Monitoring First Work has been working to establish a monitoring system to keep our members abreast of the SSM transition. Our goal is to identify the successes, challenges and gaps in the transformation landscape to keep our members informed of the progress and to identify advocacy and policy solutions for the following phases of transformation. Over the coming weeks, First Work will be releasing our first wave of monitoring reporting from the SSMs. All of this information will be available via our members-only portal. Today, we are releasing the summary report of the Overview of the Transition Plan and Roll Out of Service Delivery Model in Catchment Areas and the summary SSM QAs from their participation in Futures’20. You can find these materials in our members-only portal. First Work is also currently establishing an SSM Monitoring Committee. The purpose of this group is to have ESPs in the catchment areas meet to discuss their ongoing experiences. First Work Members in 3 catchment areas will come together to discuss their various successes, challenges, and gaps in the prototype regions. Through these meetings and discussions, First Work will provide a summary report that will also be shared as a resource for members in the organization. If your organization is in catchment and you would like to participate, please reach out to info@firstwork.org with the Page 2 of 9
Subject Line “SSM Monitoring Committee.” Communities of Practice – Recruitment Launching January 18th First Work is thrilled to be launching recruitment for our upcoming Communities of Practice! Communities of Practice (CoPs) are groups of practitioners who convene regularly to identify common problems in their work and collaborate to create and trial new solutions. First Work’s Communities of Practice for Employment Service Providers are for providers with varied experience in Second Career, Canada-Ontario Job Grant or Youth Job Connection or similar programs. First Work’s CoPs for ESPs are designed to harvest knowledge from practitioners with on-the-ground experience to create and test solutions to increase our positive impact on Ontario’s employment landscape. Keep an eye on our website for additional details on Monday! Not sure what a Community of Practice is? Join us on January 27th at 1:00pm to learn about Communities of Practice, how CoPs operate to push forward positive change, and why the idea of CoPs may sound familiar to First Work members. First Work is partnering with RBC again this year for an exclusive partnership to engage youth who are not in employment, education, or training (NEET). This partnership with First Work gives those with additional education barriers an opportunity to participate in this one- year paid internship program. Candidates are required to be first screened by our member organizations ensuring youth meet all the eligibility criteria listed below and submit an application to First Work by January 15th at 5:00pm. First Work will then conduct the final screening before sending candidates forward to RBC for their application deadline of January 18th. Ontario Update Expanding Eligibility for Emergency Child Care in Southern Ontario The Ontario government will be expanding eligibility for the targeted emergency childcare program to more frontline workers in order to help the parents of school-aged children who may not be able to support their child's learning/care at home because they are required to report to work in person. The list of new additions to the list of those eligible for Emergency Child Care can be found here. Ontario Declares Second Provincial Emergency to Address COVID-19 Crisis The Ontario government declared a second provincial emergency on Tuesday in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health. As of Thursday, the government has issued a stay-at-home order. This requires everyone to remain at home, limiting people’s mobility, to reduce the number of daily contacts with those outside an immediate household. There are exceptions for permitted purposes, however the regulations released have not provided much clarity in the way of what is deemed essential. Allotments to leave home include: going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exercise or for work, only where the work cannot be done remotely. Public Health Units do have the authority to require workplaces to shut down; however, the province is putting the onus on employers to determine which staff can work remotely. A list of the addition public health measures that are being enforced can be found here. Ontario Temporarily Pauses Residential Evictions The Ontario government has issued an emergency order to temporarily pause the enforcement of residential evictions and ensure people are not forced to leave their homes during the provincial declaration of emergency. This emergency order will also protect homeowners who are facing evictions due to court orders for possession of their properties. Ontario Provides Funding for Autism Training The Ontario government is providing $7.5 million to help educators better support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The funding will be used to deliver online courses and training opportunities for teachers Page 7 of 9
and educational assistants in all 72 of Ontario's district school boards starting in 2021. In addition to online training, Ontario is investing in subsidies for educators to take the ASD-specific Additional Qualification course, and funding to build the capacity of school leaders to support students on the autism spectrum. Federal Update Consultation to strengthen Canadians’ online safety The Federal Government is currently undertaking consultations to strengthen measures protecting against cyber-attacks. Botnets facilitate some of the most damaging cyber-attacks, including ransomware and identity theft and can cause significant harm to Canadians, businesses and organizations that provide critical services. Participate in the consultation by March 15th through the online form.
