Voting: Our Civic Responsibility! by Stan Friedland The checks and balances inherent in our Constitution, as the pillars of our democratic form of OCTOBER government, usually mention Executive, Legislative and the Judiciary. But a key component, as important 2020 as any of the three, is voting! When we vote, we make our greatest contribution to our democracy; we vote people into office and out of office. Voting truly represents “a government of, by and for” the power of the people! And yet, many people don’t vote! Did you know that only 58% of the Americans ELIGIBLE to vote in the The Cedars Post 2016 Presidential election actually voted? 138 million citizens comprised that 58%, while about 92 million people did NOT vote for varied reasons! In 2016, several key “battleground” states, with the thinnest margins of victory, decided the Electoral College eventual winner, while the opponent won the total popular vote. Needless to say, that election was decided as much by the large numbers of non-voters as by the actual voters! There has been considerable research into the question of why more eligible citizens don’t vote. The U.S. is actually below average in its voting percentages behind the other large democracies in the world. So, why don’t more eligible Americans vote? The extensive research cites the main reason as a detachment from the political process that causes a general lack of knowledge and disinterest in even knowing the candidates. So, the question for you and the challenge to you is simple. Everyone knows by now that this upcoming Presidential election is perhaps the most important ever! No one can afford to waste his or her vote by not voting. Every American owes an allegiance to OUR country, not by verbiage, but by the action of VOTING! And it’s easier than ever, as well. Here’s how: þ Get your ballot application here. Simply call the Concierge to have it delivered to you. þ Fill it out and mail ASAP! No ballot will be mailed to you if you don’t apply for one. þ Receive your ballot in the mail. þ Using a black ink pen, vote the ballot. þ On the back-side of envelope, get it witnessed and signed by any one person. þ Place a first class stamp on it. Please see page 7 for þ Place it in the return mail! important voting deadlines and information about our Early voting starts on October 15. If you want to vote early, call our transportation services to Transportation Department to take you there. You’re required to go the polls. inside. Questions, contact the Durham Board of Elections at 919-560-0700. This year we celebrate the 100th Centennial birthday of the 19th Amendment, ratified in August 1920, which gave women the right to vote. Called the Suffragette amendment, it took more than 70 long years of painful struggle to pass. It then required the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to get women of all color the real freedom to vote! We hope that EVERY woman AND man here at The Cedars will make it their civic responsibility to cast their important vote in this next, most significant election!
