Dear Volunteers,

Welcome to the 44thth running of The Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac.

85,000 competitors have registered to compete in the 2014 City2Surf,  the  world’s  largest  and
Sydney’s  favourite  sporting  event. This year the event is aiming to raise over $4million dollars for
over 650 charities across the country.

The City2Surf is 14km in distance starting from the intersection of Park and College Sts in
Sydney’s  CBD  before  heading  up  William  St  and  through  the  tunnel  at  Kings  Cross.  The  course
continues  along  New  South  Head  Rd  through  Rose  Bay  up  “Heartbreak  Hill”,  the halfway point,
and also the toughest part of the course.

Runners then turn the corner at Dover Heights into Old South Head Rd, left into Military Rd and
then  down  the  hill  to  the  finish  at  Australia’s  most  famous  and  spectacular  Bondi  Beach.

The City2Surf finish line is located on Queen Elizabeth Dr at the southern end of Bondi Pavilion.

This booklet contains your job description, useful information, maps and frequently asked
questions to help you on event day. Please remember that you are a representative of the event
and to assist wherever needed.

On behalf of Fairfax Events we would like to thank you for volunteering and for your continued
support of The Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac.

TASKS:
On arrival, please ensure that you are in the location indicated on your assigned Traffic
Control Plan (TCP). You will have received these plans with your information pack.

There may also be Police, qualified traffic controllers, or SES at the same location. Make
sure you discuss the Traffic Control Plans (TCP) for this location with any other staff to
ensure that you all have the same understanding of how it works.

TCP traffic infrastructure (such as yellow and black barriers) can only be installed by
qualified traffic controllers or Police. They must be placed onto the road or footpath
exactly as the detailed plans dictate to ensure safe traffic operations.
o Traffic Controllers will remove the barriers from the roadway ONLY when
advised by the Police that the sector is being re-opened.
o EQUIPMENT OR BARRIERS SHOULD ONLY BE MOVED BY TRAFFIC
            CONTROLLERS.
o Do NOT move any traffic control infrastructure unless directly instructed to
do so by Police or a Traffic Controller.

    prior to the race commencement.

    of shirts/jackets/ raincoats.

Course Marshals are in place to monitor vehicles and to ensure that the traffic
control plans are being followed. Please be courteous to drivers and should they
ask, let them know of the event and how long we expect the road to be closed. If a
driver disobeys the traffic control plan by moving the barriers and enters the course
where the runners are, please do not attempt to stop them!! Immediately advise the
closest Police or Traffic Controller or call your designated supervisor.

supervisor for advice or the police stationed at or near your intersection.

Ensure people watching the race near your location stand on the footpath.

IT IS CRITICAL THAT ALL ROADS THAT HAVE BEEN CLOSED FOR THE RACE ARE
NOT REOPENED TO GENERAL TRAFFIC UNTIL DIRECTED BY THE POLICE TRAFFIC
SUPERVISOR WHO WILL CONDUCT THE FINAL SWEEP OF THE COURSE.

SEQUENTIALLY. PLEASE REMAIN IN POSITION UNTIL YOU ARE INSTRUCTED BY THE
POLICE SUPERVISOR.

No Bib = No Run
All City2Surf participants must display a 2014 race bib at all times. Unregistered participants are not
permitted into the Start or Finish area and will be removed from the course by security. Once again in
2014 chest bib check points will be located at all entry points to the start area.

Resources of the event organisers, including medical and safety services, along with event supplies for
Drink  Stations  and  finishers’  medals,  are  reserved  solely  for  registered  entrants.

What happens if a runner starts in the wrong group?
A  runner’s  chest  bib  number,  including  their  bib  tag,  is  assigned  to  a  particular  start  group.  Bib  tags  are
activated as they cross the starting mats. If a runner begins the race in a start group ahead of the allocated
start group, the bib tag will NOT activate and it will result in disqualification.

What can I do with my jumper and gear?
Your entry into the City2Surf includes gear transport from the start to the finish. Please use the gear drop
corresponding to your start group. Gear drop locations for various start groups are listed below:

        Red - Archibald Fountain
Gold - Outside Hyde Park Barracks
        Green - St James Station

Please do not bring garbage bags to the start area to keep warm; these can become a serious trip hazard
for other participants. All discarded clothing at the starting line will be collected by members of the Girl
Guides Association and donated to a Charity. Please do not throw clothing into the trees in Hyde Park,
toss them to the outside of the runners area. Please also do not discard clothing in the  King’s  Cross
Tunnel, as it creates safety issues for the entrants behind.

Where can I meet people after the race?
Alphabetically marked meeting place signs will be situated in North Bondi on the promenade 350m past the
finish line.

Do runners have to return anything after the race?
No, all bibs and bib tags are disposable. Please encourage runners to use the waste and recycling stations
provided where appropriate, and help keep Bondi beautiful.

Are runners allowed to run with an iPod or other music devices?
The use of iPods and other music players while competing have inherent risks and as such Fairfax Events
discourages their use by competitors.

What do runners do after they finish?
The finish is located on Queen Elizabeth Drive at the southern end of the Bondi Pavilion.

Once you have crossed the finish line, please keep moving. Please move as far as you can through the
gates before stopping.

At  the  final  gate  you  will  receive  your  finisher’s  medal.

Please keep moving on towards the drink stations.

Please  don’t  wait  for  friends  and  family  just  past  the  gates.  This  creates  congestion  for  runners  finishing
after you. Arrange to meet your friends and family at the designated meeting places.

You do not need to return your bib or bib tag.
