2021 GSTA CONFERENCE: Making Connections CeConnectionsHorizons Conference Theme & Strands 2021 GSTA Conference: Connections In spite of these unprecedented times, Georgia teachers have continued to refine their understanding of what quality science instruction in the midst of a global pandemic. This year’s conference is virtual and will incorporate best practices for virtual, face to face and hybrid instruction. The focus of the 2021 GSTA conference is Connections and will provide an opportunity for teachers to be immersed in experiences about 3-D teaching and learning, equity, assessment, and the integration of STEM and Literacy. Conference strands: Strand 1: Connecting Science & the Community through STEM STEM has become a priority as we seek to provide today’s students with the real-world, innovative skills that they will need to be successful in tomorrow’s world. STEM instruction that builds on the foundation of core science ideas provides students with opportunities that equip them to make sense of the world in which they live, hone their critical thinking skills, and spark their sense of innovation. Sessions in this strand will allow participants to broaden their understanding of how to plan and teach collaboratively within these integrated learning environments. Sessions will focus on how STEM/STEAM can be integrated into lessons and activities that promote real-world problem-based learning that provide the student with a context for learning and achieving the goals of the Georgia Standards of Excellence in Science. Strand 2: Connecting All Students to Science through Equity Just as science encompasses diverse fields of learning from astronomy to zoology, science educators are called upon to equitably meet the needs of and engage ALL learners. Research has identified the unique challenges of a number of underserved groups, including students from urban areas, rural areas, English language learners, students with low socioeconomic status, those with special needs, gifted and talented students, and students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Cultivating a culture of equity and inclusion for all students aligns with the vision put forth by A Framework for K–12 Science Education and prepares students for future career opportunities in a global society. Sessions in this strand will broaden participants’ understanding of the unique needs of various types of learners and helps them reduce barriers to full participation in science. Strand 3: Connecting Phenomenon through Three-Dimensional Instruction & Assessment Students achieve a stronger understanding of science when disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts are woven together within student learning opportunities that explore real-world phenomena and allow students to solve authentic problems. Sessions in this strand will broaden the participant’s understanding of how to develop lessons that include formative and/or summative assessments that integrate the three dimensions. This strand will help teachers, whether they are 3D novices or experts, expand their understanding of three-dimensional teaching, learning, and assessment. Sessions in this strand will target participants with a beginning, intermediate, or advanced level of familiarity with three-dimensional learning and assessment. Strand 4: Connecting Literacy & Science Engaging ALL students in science, beginning in the early years, is the way to develop students’ skills in thinking creatively, expressing themselves, and investigating their world. As college- and career-ready students investigate natural phenomena, they should be able to communicate their argument-driven claims based on data-driven evidence. Science core ideas can be developed by using current technology and media to create, refine, and collaborate through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Sessions in this strand will broaden participant’s understanding of the connections between science and literacy, and to experience literacy strategies that encompass active student engagement. Strand 5: Connecting Teachers through Leadership & Networking Leadership development is a key component of developing strong teacher leaders. Whether you are a department chair, instruction coach, district director or science leader in your building, this strand will provide opportunities for you to network with other teachers. NOTE: While sessions included in these strands will be highlighted for this year's conference, workshops, presentations and activity- rich sessions across all areas of science education will be included. She is the developer and primary author of the award-winning Uncovering Student Ideas in Science series and the Formative Assessment- Practical Strategies Linking Assessment, Instruction, and Learning series (the "FACTs books"). Her interest in teaching for conceptual understanding and understanding students’ thinking began in 1992 after reading the seminal article, Teaching for Conceptual Change- Confronting Children's Experience by Bruce Watson and Dick Konicek. Her very first assessment probe, The Mitten Problem, was based on that article. Her assessment probes and FACTs (formative assessment classroom techniques) are widely used by K-12 teachers, university professors, professional developers, and science specialists throughout the U.S. and internationally. Page recently "retired" from the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA) where she was Ms. Page Keeley the Senior Science Program Director since 1996. Today she works as an independent consultant, speaker, and author providing professional development to school districts and organizations in the Thursday, 6:00 pm areas of science and STEM formative assessment, understanding student thinking, and teaching science for conceptual understanding. Keeley taught middle and high school science for 15 years. At that time she was an active teacher leader at the state and national level. She received the Presidential Award for excellence in Secondary Science Teaching in 1992 and the Milken National Educator Award in 1993. 2021 GSTA CONFERENCE: Making Connections CeConnectionsHorizons Conference Sessions - Wednesday Keynote, Wednesday, 6:00 PM Featured Session •Presenter: Dr. Jason Crean and Kristin Rademaker •Title: Writing Storyline Units •Description: Three-dimensional learning that incorporates the disciplinary core ideas, the science practices and the crosscutting concepts is the driving force of the National Framework for Science Education and all Three-Dimensional Standards. In order to better integrate the different topics typically taught in the life science classroom, storyline units that are coherent and phenomenon-driven have been created so that students can make sense of how science works in the real world. These storylines, written as part of a highly collaborative effort led by highly trained teachers, has proven to be a great model of how three-dimensional learning can be applied in today's biology instruction and lead to students becoming self-directed learners and thinkers. •Level: ALL General WEDNESDAY– 6:50 PM Day: Wednesday, 2/3 Time: 6:50 PM - 7:30 PM Title: ATLAS: The Roadmap to Successful Assessment in Biology!
