ABOUT THE EVENT
Recycle the Runway is a fashion fundraiser for Dress for Success Quad Cities
where local designers compete for cash prizes before a panel of celebrity
judges. Up to 10 designers will be selected to showcase runway-ready
ensembles crafted from bags of recycled clothing and accessories.
Entry is open to anyone in the Quad Cities region aged 18 and above.
Designers may compete individually or in teams of two, and will showcase
their designs virtually before a live audience on April 22.
The top 3 designers will receive cash prizes as well as have their business
featured in social media and email promotions leading up to the event.
In 2020, despite the event’s postponement and last-minute switch to a virtual
format, over 300 registered attendees demonstrated their commitment to the
empowerment of women.
ABOUT DRESS FOR SUCCESS
QUAD CITIES
Dress for Success is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that empowers women to achieve
economic independence by providing a network of support, professional
attire and the development tools to help them thrive in work and in life. The
Quad Cities affiliate has been serving women in Eastern Iowa and Western
Illinois since 2011 by providing free business-appropriate clothing, job-search
support, mentoring, financial literacy and professional development
workshops.
COMPETITION OVERVIEW cash prizes First Place: $650 Second Place: $250 Third Place: $100 judging criteria Craftsmanship/quality of the design Creativity/originality (see previous designs for inspiration) Overall, head-to-toe look including hair, makeup and accessories timeline Designers will be selected and notified via email by February 12 Designers can pick up their bags beginning February 15 Designs must be completed no later than April 11 A professional videographer - provided by Dress for Success Quad Cities - will come to shoot a spotlight video of the final design reveal the week of April 12. Designers are asked to submit a 90-120 second video documenting the making of the design (see example here) by April 19. Submit your application to design in Recycle the Runway 2021 HERE
DESIGNER GUIDELINES The entry fee is $50 Payment is due, along with a headshot and bio, prior to or at bag pickup. Payments can be made via PayPal, Venmo, cash or check. Each designer/team must construct one woman’s outfit using items from the bag. Designers may supplement with their own materials, but at least 65% of the final outfit should come from the bag. Final designs must be kept hidden until the night of the event - however - designers are encouraged to share sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes updates on social media prior to. Dress for Success Quad Cities will provide a professional videographer to shoot a showcase video to be played during the livestream to ensure consistency and fairness. All designers are requested to submit a brief "making of" video. This can be casual and fun! The top 3 designers must arrange to have their designs transferred to Dress for Success Quad Cities within 30 days of the event, to be showcased at future live events. Designers who do not place in the top 3 are not required to donate their designs but it is much appreciated. Submit your application to design in Recycle the Runway 2021 HERE
