Welcome to the Village of Greendale! We are proud of our quaint, historical, and unique community and the many opportunities it has to offer new residents. This guide contains information on the most commonly asked topics for new residents to help them get settled. If you have additional questions not found in this guide, please contact Village Hall at 414-423-2100. Getting Around: The Village is one of three government sponsored “Greenbelt” GETTING AROUND GREENDALE communities (click here for more information about the Village’s history). The green- belt communities were built to be walkable so residents could walk to schools, shops and parks. The Village has maintained this concept with an abundant walkway and sidewalk system . The Village is served by multiple transit lines with the Milwaukee County Transit System. The Village is also connected to the Milwaukee County Oak Leaf Trail, which provides opportunities for walking, running or biking. 2
Curbside Pickup: The Village provides curbside collection(excluding commercial and larger multi-family) gar- bage and recycling. Garbage is picked up weekly and recycling is picked up every other week (click on map to find out your pickup day). You may purchase an optional garbage cart (95 or 65 gallon) or you can pur- chase your own container of not less than 20 gallons nor more REFUSE AND RECYCLING than 32 gallons. If you are us- ing your own container, the weight limit is 50 pounds. The recycling carts are mandatory (exemptions were allowed for those with disabilities or a special circumstance). Please place your garbage/ recycling by the curb by 7:00 am on your collection day. Garbage containers must be stored so that they are screened from public view and shall be stored behind the front building line, and on corner properties behind the street side building line. Refuse and Recycling Yard: Located at 6351 Industrial Loop - Only Village resi- dents who are part of the Village’s solid waste disposal curbside collection pro- gram are allowed to use the disposal and recycling facilities at the public works yard. A resident using these facilities shall, as proof of such residency, display his/her cur- rent Wisconsin operator's license or other form of identification issued by a state or county agency containing the person's picture, name, and address, as proof of such residency. It shall be a violation for any nonresident, or resident allowing a nonresi- dent, to use the disposal and recycling facilities at the public works yard. A non- resident landlord of a 1-3 family residential unit may obtain a permit. Items accepted: Appliances Yard Waste Computers Televisions/Computer Monitors (a permit is needed to dispose of a tv/monitor) Textiles (clothing, shoes, etc.) Food Recycling (food scraps in biodegradable bags) Metal Oil Recyclable Materials (items that are permitted in the curbside recycling program) Garbage The Yard’s hours are: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 7 am – 3 pm, Saturdays 8 am – 4 pm (April— November) & 8:00 am—1:00 pm (December—March), Closed Tuesdays and Thursdays Check here for holiday hours. 3
Driveway Parking: Vehicles parked on the driveway must be properly licensed and drivable and not parked over the sidewalk. Vehicles may be stored in either an enclosed building or on any part of the residential lot to the rear of the front or side street building line but not within the required side yard nor within 10 feet of the rear or side lot lines within the rear yard. (Greendale Code Section 17.06). Lawn and Yard Maintenance: All weeds and grass shall be kept cut to a height not to exceed one foot. Failure to comply: The Village may cause all weeds and grass to be cut and removed and brush removed and the cost charged to the property owner (§ 66.0627, Wis. Stats). If a tree or shrub on private property is found to be a public nuisance which endangers the life, health, safety or property of the public the Department of Public Works may order the nuisance be addressed. Yard waste may be brought to the Refuse RULES AND REGULATIONS and Recycling Yard. The Department of Public Works will also pick up yard waste curbside for a fee. Branches must be bundled and yard waste must be placed in bio- degradable bags and weigh no more than 50 pounds each. Click here for more infor- mation. Parking Regulations Parking is not permitted on Village streets between 3 am – 6 am without permission or a parking permit. Monthly, quarterly, and annual permits can be obtained from the Police Department. Overnight parking regulations and special parking permit. Parking of recreational vehicles: See Village ordinance regarding parking of recreational vehicles by clicking here or contact the Department of Inspection Services with questions 414-423-2100. Pet Licensing All cats and dogs are required to be licensed annually. Per Village ordinance, no person shall keep or harbor a number of dogs and/or cats over the age of 12 weeks, which added together total no more than three animals, except by issuance of a special permit. The special permit would permit up to one additional dog or cat. Pet Licenses can be obtained at the Village Hall by bringing in proof of rabies vaccination and proof of spay/neuter. If the animal is not spayed/neutered, the fee is doubled. People walking pets in the Village are required to have their animals under control at all times and must clean up animal waste. Property Maintenance: There are various Municipal Code requirements regarding maintenance that were put in place to provide a safe environment and maintain proper- ty values. Rummage/Garage Sale: No more than two rummage sales may be conducted in one calendar year, each for no more than three consecutive days. A rummage sale permit must be obtained for $10 at Village Hall. Snow Shoveling/Sidewalks: Any person occupying a home which abuts a walkway must clear the snow within 12 hours after a snowfall. Snow removed from sidewalks and driveways shall not be pushed, plowed or blown onto or across Village roads. **If you live in a Greendale Original home, design guidelines were developed. Village Board: The Greendale Village Board meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 pm at Village Hall (6500 North- way). If you are unable to attend in person, you may stream the meeting on the Village’s YouTube channel or watch replays of the meet- ing on the Village’s cable channel on Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7:00 pm (channel 25 for those with Spectrum cable services). Their ad- ministrative offices are located at 6815 Southway (414-423-2710). The District in- cludes three elementary schools (boundary map), one middle school and one high school. Read the Village Views, the Village’s newsletter is mailed out quarterly to all residents. Read Life in the Village magazine, mailed out three times/year—The magazine includes articles from the Village, School District, Lions Club, Historical Society, Chamber of Commerce, Greendale Entertainment Association and the Greendale Education Foundation. The Village has a variety of events throughout the year, including a 4th of July pa- rade, festival and fireworks, movies in Gazebo Park, Petpalooza, Village Days, Oktoberfest, Tree Lighting Ceremony and many more. There are also other community groups that plan events, such as Greendale Park & Recrea- tion, the Greendale Lions Club, Greendale Entertain- ment Association, the VILLAGE EVENTS Greendale Historical Socie- ty and more. Events foster community pride, bring vis- itors to the Village, and support local business. Information on events can also be found by following the Greendale Celebrations facebook page and are also listed in the Village’s quarterly newsletter and the Village magazine “Life in the Village”, which is sent out three times a year in conjunction with the School District and other Village organizations. The Village has a vast array of park facilities and green spaces. The School District and Milwaukee County also have parks in Greendale: College Park: 5201 W. College Avenue, softball diamonds, playgrounds, tennis courts and soccer fields. Community Center Park: 6200 S. 76th Street, tennis courts, softball dia- monds, basketball hoops, picnic tables, picnic shelter (available for rental), flag foot- ball fields, and playground equipment. VILLAGE PARKS & FACILITIES Daffodil Park: Located just east of the Downtown shops, it can be accessed by a pedestrian bridge from the Downtown shops, or from walkways connecting to Northway and Schoolway, playground equipment and walking paths. Gazebo Park: 5710 Broad Street, located in the heart of Downtown it is where many of the summer events take place including the Lions Club Family 4th Fest and the Ga- zebo Concert Series. The Gazebo may be rented. Jaycee Park: 6011 Broad Street, fenced baseball field and playground. Lions Park: 7405 Edgehill Road, baseball field and playground. 84th/Grange: Playground equipment, soccer fields and softball diamond. Root River Parkway South: Milwaukee County owned, part of the Oak Leaf trail, disc-golf courses, picnic areas, Whitnall Beer Garden. Scout Lake Park: 5902 W. Loomis Road, Milwaukee County park, park building, trails, pier for fishing, playground. Trimborn Farm: 8881 W. Grange Avenue, Milwaukee County Historical Society, Historic Site, Hosts events such as the Harvest of Arts & Crafts in September Veterans Memorial: At the corner of Southway and Broad Street there is a Veterans Memorial honoring veterans from all military branches. Whitnall Park: 5879 S. 92nd Street, located just west of Greendale, Milwaukee County Park, botanical gardens, golf course, nature center, playgrounds and more. Other Facilities Available: The Historic Hose Tower is located at 5699 Parking Street (414- 423-2100). This unique, historic venue can be rented out for meet- ings and events and includes plenty of free parking. You do not need to be a resident to rent, but the rates are reduced for resident rentals. The Community Learning Center has a community meeting room available for Greendale residents for group meetings. 7

A Community Meeting Room is available to Greendale groups and residents in the lower level. Fire Department: The Village operates a 24/7 full-time Fire Department, which offers both paramedic and fire services. The Fire Station is located at the Safety Center at 5911 W. Grange Avenue. File of Life: The file of life is designed to help the Fire Department obtain your necessary medical history and emergency contact information in the event of an emergency. Place the form on your refrigerator door and keep the area around it clear so it can be easily spotted. Health Department: The goal of public health is to promote the highest level of well-being for all groups of people in the community. The Greendale Health De- partment provides a variety of programs and services aimed at preventing or re- ducing health problems and promoting optimum health for individuals, families, and the community. Health Department services are available to all residents of the Vil- lage of Greendale. Inspection Services: The Village of Greendale Inspection Services Depart- ment is responsible for issuing and maintaining records for Commercial and Resi- dential permits, Zoning and Code Enforcement. Before you begin a construction project at your home, please call the Dept. of Inspection Services 414-423-2100. Permits are required for a number of home/ property improvements, to ensure that the construction process is done in compli- ance with local and state codes. If you decide to sell a home that has had modifica- tions without a permit, you may experience delays in the sale. You can find a list of permit requirements by clicking here and includes, but not limited to fences, stor- age sheds, rec-rooms, decks, swimming pools/hot tubs, driveways, roof- ings, installation of HVAC equipment, dishwashers, etc. Library: The Greendale Public Library is located in the Community Learning Center at 5647 Broad Street (414-423-2136). Monday—Thursday 9:00 am—8:00 pm, Friday 9:00 am—6:00 pm Saturday 9:00 am—2:00 pm, Sundays—closed from Memorial Day to Labor Day 8
Municipal Court: The Greendale Municipal Court has jurisdiction in all matters involving violations of Greendale ordinances. The Municipal Court is located at the Safety Center, 5911 W. Grange Avenue. Court sessions are held on Wednesdays at 4:00 pm. Park & Recreation: The Greendale Park and Recreation Department is run by the VILLAGE DEPARTMENTS & SERVICES School District, but is located in the CLC at 5647 Broad Street (414-423-2790) and offers programs, special events and trips throughout the year for people of all ag- es. Activity Guides are mailed to all Greendale residents. Registration is available online, by phone, by mail or in person. The Greendale Senior Social Club is coordi- nated through the Park and Recreation Department (414-423-2790). Police: The Village operates a full-time Police Department that provides protec- tion 24/7 and is located at 5911 W. Grange Avenue. Some of the additional services to the community that the Police provide are listed below: Block Parties—A block party permit can be obtained from the Greendale Police Department. The applicant must reside on the block and is responsible for the event, including set-up and take down of barricades and clean up of the street after the party. The street must be accessible for emergency vehicles at all times. Emergency Notification System- A reverse 911 system alerts residents, businesses and visitors about potential emergency circumstances and rapidly notifies specific geographical areas by telephone. You can register your cell phone number by going to the Village website. Home Security—The Police Department has a Home Security Handbook and other tips to keep your property safe. Medication Disposal- There is a drop box at the Police Department to bring old medications, please put them in a clear plastic bag Safe Exchange Area—Residents may use this safe meeting area to make a safe exchange for an online purchase 24 hours a day. Located on the north side of the Safety Center parking lot at 5911 West Grange Avenue. Special Needs Registry—The Special Needs Registry is a Greendale Police Department project in partnership with the community promoting communication and giving first responders quick access to critical information about a registered person with special needs. You may find the form on the Village website. Vacation House Watch—Homeowners may notify the Police Department when their home may be vacant for an extended period of time due to vacation or other circumstances. Submit the Vacation House Watch Form located on the Police Department page on the Village website. Public Works: The Public Works is responsible for garbage/recycling collection, snow removal, maintenance of Village Parks and buildings, maintenance of the wa- ter, stormwater and sewer utilities, maintenance of Village streets and much more! See page 3 for information on refuse and recycling. 9
Village Hall: The Village Hall is located at 6500 Northway and is open Monday— Friday 7:30 am—4:30 pm. There you can register to vote, pay your water bill and/or property taxes, speak with the Building Inspector, apply for permits, apply for a rummage sale permit and much more. Elections & Voting—If you are new to the Village and have updated your VILLAGE DEPARTMENTS & SERVICES driver’s license to your Greendale address, you can easily register by going to myvote.wi.gov. If you have not updated your address, you can fill out a voter registration application and bring in proof of residency either to Village Hall or on the day of the election. All residents who live east of Loomis Road vote on High- land View Elementary (5900 S. 51st Street) and all residents who live west of Loomis Road vote at the Greendale High School (6801 Southway) Property taxes—During the month of December, all real estate owners will re- ceive their property tax bill. The first payment is due January 31st, and the bill can be paid all at once or in three installments (second installment due April 30th and third installment due July 31st). Payments can be made online, mailed in, left in the Village’s drop box or paid in person at Village Hall. Water & Sewer: The Village maintains their own water and sewer lines, which are connected to Milwaukee Water Works and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District. Utility bills are billed quarterly and are mailed to the property address. You may set up automatic payment of your utility bills, pay online or in person at Village Hall. Contact Village Hall 414-423-2100 with any questions on utility bill- ing. For any water main breaks or sewer backups, please contact the Department of Public Works 414-423-2133 during business hours (Monday—Friday 7:00 am— 3:00 pm) or the Police Department after hours 414-423-2121. Welcome Center: The Historic Greendale Welcome Center is located at 5680 Broad Street (414-409-2556). Stop by to pick up Greendale gear, map of the Village, learn about Greendale’s history, check out the Chamber of Commerce display and upcoming Village events.
