06 www.ed.ac.uk/medicine-vet-medicine/postgraduate Open to Riding away from the world extinction The Przewalski’s horse roamed the Central Asian steppes and was never successfully domesticated. In 1969 it was declared extinct in the wild, with only a few hundred remaining in captivity – all descended from just 12 wild-caught animals. Since then, conservation has increased the population to around 1,900 animals living in captivity or wild at reintroduction sites. Animal health studies and veterinary care have been vital to successfully bring the species back from the edge of extinction. Dr Ellie Milnes, a 2020 graduate of our MVetSci Conservation Medicine degree, works at Toronto Zoo optimising anaesthesia protocols to improve horse health and human safety. “Equids can be tricky to anaesthetize by dart. The ultrapotent opioids we have traditionally relied upon (etorphine) can cause severe respiratory depression with muscle rigidity and are potentially fatal to humans if accidentally exposed. “We investigated an alternative dart protocol to improve both horse and human safety and found a non-ultrapotent opioid combination is just as effective and produces less respiratory depression and greater muscle relaxation. Next steps will involve further research to improve field anaesthetic monitoring for Przewalski’s horse. “I am passionate about improving anaesthetic safety for wildlife in human care. It's a privilege to care for endangered equid species and I hope my research will help zoo veterinarians make more informed decisions about immobilisation procedures.” Dr Milnes' research is one of several Przewalski’s horse studies, devoted to the long-term survival of the species, funded by Morris Animal Foundation and the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians Wild Animal Health Fund. Veterinary & Agricultural Sciences Postgraduate Opportunities 2021 The University of Edinburgh 09 The LARIF – situated close to the Roslin Institute at the School's Easter Bush campus – houses an unparalleled combination of imaging, surgical, gene editing and infection containment facilities. It offers exceptional specialist capability for in-depth studies into the health and wellbeing of all major farmed livestock. Also housed at the LARIF is the Wellcome Trust-funded Critical Care Laboratory for Large Animals, which supports the study of large animal biology with all the resources of a human hospital. Highly skilled specialists in veterinary anaesthesia will provide round-the-clock care for animals involved in studies. Advanced medical imaging equipment on site, including CT, MRI, fluoroscopy and ultrasound, enables detailed understanding of anatomy and body composition in livestock, as well as monitoring progression of disease processes in different organs, and their response to treatment. Studies at the LARIF will also investigate human conditions. Large animal species are valuable biomedical models for studying human diseases and developing new medical technologies. "The LARIF is a unique and world-leading facility that significantly enhances our ability to study human and animal health. Taking this multidisciplinary approach Protecting the world's most is a key focus for the University and can lead to significant advances in medicine, veterinary medicine and agricultural science." trafficked animal Professor David Argyle Head of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies A team from the School, working with Save Vietnam's Wildlife, has played a vital role safeguarding the welfare of pangolins – the world's most trafficked mammal. RCVS advanced practitioner in zoological medicine Heather Bacon, and vet nurse Jess Davies, travelled to Cuc Phuong National Park in Vietnam to share knowledge of endangered carnivore veterinary care and management. The visit saw wild pregnant pangolins examined in a rescue centre using ultrasound – the first time this has happened, it is believed. Heather delivered training in anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, and surgical techniques, and learned from the Vietnamese team about the health and husbandry of captive pangolins, and other small carnivores. The Edinburgh team took an ultrasound machine, an IV fluid pump, and a refractometer – equipment essential in supporting the safeguarding of pangolin health and welfare. Dr Bacon said: "This was an exciting opportunity for all of us. Save Vietnam’s Wildlife team is incredibly experienced at pangolin care, and it was a real privilege to participate in their work on this critically endangered species. "In return, we were delighted to deliver the donated ultrasound machine, and support their work by delivering training and detecting pregnancy in a female pangolin, which will enable the team to better manage these vulnerable animals. It was a great collaborative exchange of knowledge and experiences."
