Spirit of South Dakota Vermillion may not be as warm or as tropical as sunny Florida, but it isn’t fondly known as the Miami of South Dakota for no reason. As southeast in South Dakota as you can get and brimming with art, culture, education, food, and history, you’re bound to experience something new (and we just happen to get the best weather in SD too). We’re number one in spirits, cats, and professors in rock bands. We love Vermillion and we know you’ll #LOVermillion too. @mad.oco.photography @usouthdakota @zbyneksurovec @jerredz @enosh.krupakar 3 LiveVermillion.com

The University is not only the largest employer in our hometown, but with an enrollment of over 7,000, the student body nearly doubles the city’s population while school is in session! As the flagship university in the state, USD boasts South Dakota’s only law school and medical school. On campus, students learn the value of community and are always looking for ways to get involved. Vermillion is a community of hand-raisers, do-gooders, and show-uppers. It’s a unique place where business owners, artists, retirees, and educators share coffee and conversation on Wednesday mornings; students and farmers eat at the same sandwich shop in the local hardware store; and everyone agrees on three things: #LOVermillion, Go Yotes, and we are the spirit of South Dakota. 6

WELCOME FROM the Mayor As mayor of Vermillion, I’m pleased to welcome you to our amazing community! Our city offers something for everyone - a friendly small town feel with vibrant culture and amenities that may surprise you. We have our own (pretty popular) hashtag - #LOVermillion - that speaks to the deep attachment our citizens, USD alumni, and visitors have for this place. I guarantee you’ll feel that energy as soon as you arrive, whether it’s a brief stay or a more permanent move. Ours is a progressive city on the move - where we honor our history and traditions, while also celebrating new people and ideas. Vermillion is not just a place to live, it’s a place to love. Vermillion is home to the University of South Dakota, a vital and engaging component of our community since 1862. The cultural, educational, athletic and research opportunities offered by USD are utilized and appreciated by our community members, and they are prized as a truly special and unique feature of Vermillion. For sports fans, a trip to Vermillion isn’t complete without attending a USD basketball game at the amazing Sanford Coyote Sports Center, or enjoying a football game in South Dakota’s only indoor football stadium, the newly renovated DakotaDome! Go Yotes! We are unquestionably proud to have become a premier culinary destination in Southeast South Dakota and invite you to visit one of our amazing dining options. In addition, you’ll find many specialty shops and other services in our Historic Downtown, as well as an assortment of eateries, theaters, parks, museums, and more along Cherry Street and on Highway 50. You’ll also find many retail stores ranging from “big box” to boutiques, offering unique shopping selections and experiences. We invite you to experience our culture and history by visiting the state’s oldest museum, the W.H. Over Musuem, the state’s first winery, Valiant Vineyards, the stunning Missouri River at Clay County Park, or Spirit Mound - where Lewis and Clark stood on their historic journey. Of course, Vermillion has long been home to the world-renowned National Music Museum, currently undergoing extensive renovations aimed at providing greater exhibition space for their 15,000+ collection of priceless instruments. You’ll discover several satellite displays of instruments throughout the city during the renovations. Like every town, Vermillion has faced its share of challenges in the last year. But instead of pulling back, our business community and government have dug in, innovated, and are coming back stronger than ever. Even if you’ve visited before, be prepared for some new and exciting offerings on the horizon in our great city. There are so many things to do in Vermillion you won’t likely fit it all in on your first visit. That’s OK. Come back soon to kayak on the Missouri River in the spring; watch the South Dakota Shakespeare Festival or cheer for the South Dakota High School All-Stars in early June; experience the fun at the Prentis Plunge waterpark; play 18 holes at The Bluffs public four-star golf course. We think you’ll find that Vermillion is truly the ‘Spirit of South Dakota’. 10
