C it y S ce n e National Day of Prayer at The American Village Be a part of the National Day of Prayer Breakfast at The American Village in Montevallo, Ala. on Thursday May 10 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The event will include a special message of encouragement from ABC 33/40 Chief Me- teorologist James Spann. “Many of us are fans and followers of our speaker James Spann and his public service as a meteorologist. What many do not realize is that he has a powerful testimony of God’s love and grace,” said Tom Walker, Founder and President of the American Village. “This is a special time to break bread, enjoy fellowship and offer both prayers of thanksgiving and entreaty for God’s blessings,” Walker said. Over his 32 year career as a television weather anchor, Spann has received numerous awards, including an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Thirteen times he has been named Best Weather Anchor in Alabama by the Associated Press, but when he was a 7-year-old boy in Greenville, Ala., his future looked bleak. "My father abandoned me and my mom when I was in second grade," Spann said. The father he worshipped and looked up to left without saying goodbye or telling his son he loved him. "My father never told me he loved me," Spann said. "I know what it's like to be broke. I became a man at 7." Two years after his father left them, Spann and his mother moved to Tuscaloosa, where later, as a 17-year-old senior at Tuscaloosa High School, he got his start in broadcasting working the weekend shift at WTBC-AM 1230. Spann shares how he also found his true father in heaven at an early age. "I learned the God of the universe loves me," Spann said. "I accepted that message at 12." The National Day of Prayer Breakfast is sponsored by the Lucille Ryals Thompson Colonial Chapel Foundation and cosponsored by the American Village Citizenship Trust. Tickets are $20 per person. To make a reservation, The National Day of Prayer Breakfast at the email jwasyluka@americanvillage.org or call 205-665-3535 ext.1045. B e st B ooks Encounter the Living God & Hope Again This week a man told me a tragic story, one of unimaginable pain and loss. The horror which had befallen a good and godly man was so dark and crushing that my attempts to offer words of wisdom and comfort seemed feeble and cliché. I know the Scriptures. I know that God will make all things new and restore all that was lost. But I walked away from the conver- sation unsure how my own sanity and faith would survive such an experience. Can God be found when life turns into a nightmare, when we've exhausted all hope and evil seems to have won the day? The story of Je- sus affirms that God's power and grace can be with us in the deepest crisis, turning darkness into light and death into life. In Reaching for Wonder - Encountering Christ When Life Hurts (Abingdon Press), author Marlo Schalesky explores fourteen New Testament encounters with Jesus which turned people's lives around, bringing healing and hope to those in desperate situations. You'll meet a Samaritan woman shackled with shame, a leper filled with loneliness, and an outcast wandering among the dead, haunted by the voices in his head. Listen as Jesus calls a child back to life, tells a healed woman to go in peace and be freed from suffering, and whispers away the sin of a wayward woman. Time and again Jesus rescues, delivers, heals, and restores. In each case, when all seemed lost, Jesus showed up and changed everything. S e n ior S ce n e No Time to Exercise? Go Grab a Hot Bath Usually you take a hot bath after you exercise, to cool off and wash off. But if you cannot exercise, substitute a hot bath for it. Now granted, the main instigator to aerobic exercise 6 days a week is to create new brain cells, both neurons and glia cells. Studies tell us that conducting a regime of ‘passive heating’, upping the body heat from the sauna or a hot bath as opposed to getting hot and sweaty from being active from aerobic exercise, improves health. Specifically studies show where ‘passive heating’ helps with sleep and helps increase growth hormones and level energy hormones. Soaking in heat is also shown to provide relief to asthma and chronic bronchitis sufferers, and alle- viate pain and improve joint mobility in patients with rheumatic disease. Studying subjects with congestive heart failure sitting in a 106F water bath, the Kagoshima University School of Medicine in Japan reported in the International Journal of Cardiology that oxygen levels increased, heart rate increased and blood pressure decreased. But what about brain health? Research Associate Steve H. Faulkner of Loughborough University of the UK lead a study of men who spent an hour in a hot bath or who completed an hour of cycling. The effects on blood sugar control and on energy expended (number of calories burned) were analyzed. While the cyclists did burn more calories, 630 in an hour, those who bathed burned as many calories in their hour soak equivalent to a ½ hour of general walking, approximately 140 calories. After both bathers and cyclists were given similar meals after their bath and cycling, the post meal glucose levels of the bathers was 10% lower than those of the cyclists. In other words, the bathers called up less insulin to dissolve their blood sugar after digesting their meals. Faulkner commented that “this may be the result of the work of heat shock proteins (HSPs) released when your body temperature rises”. Heat shock proteins are molecules that are made by all cells of the human body, including the brain, in response to stresses. Their levels rise following exercise and passive heating. In the long term, raised levels of these proteins may help the function of insulin, whether called into action by the pancreas, the brain or both, and improve blood sugar control. Conversely, heat shock proteins have been shown to be lower in people with diabetes. Dia- betes is a major pre-cursor to dementia. Faulkner’s study also showed where passive heating, whether bath or sauna, created chang- es to the inflammatory response similar to that following exercise. The anti-inflammatory response to exercise is important as chronic inflammation is a key trigger to dementia. While I have not found studies to confirm passive heating, sauna or hot tub bath, promotes neurogenesis or creation of new brain cells, soaking absolutely increases one’s brain health. All concurrences give justification for it, obviously further studies are needed. Yet for those unable to physically exercise, increasing your core temperature through hot baths would be most beneficial. And while a hot bath or sauna should not replace exercise, when you are pushed for time, grab a hot bath, the next best thing. — Janet Rich Pittman Dementia Administrator, Practitioner, and Prevention Specialist www.TheBrainNerd.com May 2018 17
H ealthy L ivi ng presented by: Jason’s Fitness 1 on 1 with Jason S. Greene: The Triceps Bench Dip (De-gink your arms!) When beach season rolls around most people think of their flabby gut. Some may think of jiggly thighs, but for many others the horror comes in the form of sleeveless shirts and dresses! Specifi- cally, I am referring to the back of the upper arm. More correctly called the triceps. Over the past 38-years, many women have come up to me and asked me how to get rid of the gink on the back of their arms. One woman actually demonstrated that when she quit waving her arm, it would continue to flap in the wind. She said it was like a sail on a boat that had come loose from its rigging. Since waving is a very common greeting used by us Southerners, this presented her with quite a dilemma. By the same token I have met men that could not fill out the arms of their t-shirt. Speaking from personal experience, trust me when I tell you, this is no less terrifying for a man than flappy arms are for a woman! That brings me to my exercise. You cannot believe how many different ways man has devised to work this body part. I could probably easily list over a hundred exercises just for the triceps. I chose this one because it requires no special equipment and can be done literally anywhere. It is usually referred to as the triceps bench dip, but can also be performed using other objects, such as a sturdy kitchen chair. Instruction: Position your hands beside your hips on a secure bench and keep your elbows facing rearward. Place your feet out in front of you on the floor. Straighten out your arms and keep a little bend in your elbows in order to always keep tension on your triceps and off your elbow joints (photo-a). Inhale as you bend your elbows to slowly lower your upper body down towards the ground until you feel a stretch in your triceps and shoulder joints (photo-b). Once you reach the bottom position, hold your breath and push yourself upward until your arms are fully extended. Exhale as you pass the most difficult portion of the up phase or when your arms are fully extended. Pause for a moment in the top position and repeat. Focus straight ahead throughout the exercise. Tips: 1. Start with shallow movements until you get used to the exercise. 2. To make the exercise more difficult place you feet on a surface the same height as your hands. 3. To make it even harder have a partner place a weight in your lap! — Jason S. H as s le F r ee Z on e Peel Back the Layers of Household Clutter After winter, we are ready to feel lighter, but we feel pulled down by layers of clutter in our homes, storage areas, and even cars. The pervasive feeling around household clutter seems to be guilt. We struggle with our clutter, and then we feel bad about our struggle. First, give up the guilt. Recognize that clutter sometimes comes off in layers. Though it would be nice if clutter all came off in a weekend cleanout in one giant purge, in real life, it often doesn’t work that way. My college textbooks and paperwork are a great example of why clutter sometimes will come off in gently peeled layers. Since I had invested a lot of time and energy in studying, I initially felt my college books and notes somehow represented who I was. After a few years, however, I was able to toss the notes and textbooks for subjects that weren’t critical to my majors. Later, I could toss the box with notes and textbooks of my major too. Today all that remains are a few papers I wrote and kept because I got a kick out of them, and, I hang onto the illusion that my kids might get a kick out of them some day--as though they are going to be interested reading Mom’s old papers (yeah, right). You can toss that clutter guilt too: • Make it a habit to regularly “sweep” through a room, or even just a drawer. Cull out items that haven’t been used in a reasonable period of time. Keep in mind that our sense of time can become distorted. If I think I haven’t used that salad mold for a year or two, but that I might still use it again “some- day,” the reality probably is that I haven’t used it in over three years and that I won’t use it in the future either. • Pretend to move across the country. As I look at each item in a room, I ask myself if I would be willing to pack it up and move it across the coun- try. If I would not take it to a new home, why would I let it hang around here in my present day home? • Ask yourself what your grown children will do with an item you are reluctant to toss. What will they do when they find it in the bottom of a closet someday? Will they know what it is? Will they know the family history behind this treasure? If they will see no value in it, why hang onto it? If it has value, make sure your kids know the value (sentimen- tal, historical, or financial) now. • Recognize evolution. Styles, colors, and technology constantly change for almost everything. Think about stereo equipment, deep entertainment centers for deep televisions, records, old vacuum cleaners, microwavable dishes, and baby clothes, to name just a few. Ask yourself if the item you cling to will stand the test of time. If not, send it on its way now. • Schedule regular clutter clearing. It could be sched- uled on your calendar on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual basis. Whatever works best for you! It is perfectly fine for clutter to come off in layers, especially if we are willing to make it a habit to address our clutter regu- larly. People constantly change. Our lives constantly change. Clutter is kind of like an onion. We get to peel it off in layers and we can manage it! — Barbara Tako Barbara is a clutter clearing motivational speaker and author of Clutter Clearing Choices: Clear Clutter, Organize Your Home, & Reclaim Your Life (O Books, 2010), a seasonally organized book of clutter clearing tips that readers can pick and choose from to fit their personal style and needs. Restoring Faith in Alabama Scott Dawson for Governor “We’ve kicked the can down the road for so long now, we no longer have any road left.” We can do better. No, we must do better or Alabama will never emerge from the bottom of nearly every meaningful statistic that counts. Join me, as we cast a conservative vision for the next generation and together, we’ll put an end to decades of business-as-usual and make things right. We MUST stop electing career politicians. Scott Dawson has never run for office before. He is an outsider’s outsider. Unlike the politicians who owe their careers and lifestyles to big-money and special interests, Scott Dawson is not beholden to any group or association in Montgomery or Washington, D.C. Alabama needs hope. We need to restore faith in our leadership, faith in our communities and faith in our future. For forty years, we’ve elected politicians who have all the answers and yet we have the same problems. Alabama has been fighting the same problems since Fob James was first elected Governor in 1978: corruption, struggling schools, overcrowded prisons and crumbling inadequate roads.
