Work Experience and University Study WORK EXPERIENCE: OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING (OPT) After one academic year (three consecutive quarters) of full-time study in a non-language program in the United States, students can apply for permission to work up to 12 months in their field of study as a practical application of what they have learned. This is called Optional Practical Training (OPT). The International Student Services (ISS) staff will assist students with their application for OPT. The ISS staff has a very high success rate with OPT applications. They cannot, however, guarantee the approval of the application by the U.S. government.
