Welcome to WAMFest 2018 Welcome to the 2018 iteration of WAMFest. Sounds simple doesn’t it?! The reality is that the combined live elements, conference and music awards - city and regional - that take place under the banner of WAMFest is quite a massive undertaking; this year taking place over multiple weeks through October and November. In fact, by the time you read this some regional events will have already taken place. Is bigger necessary better I hear you ask? What we set out to achieve isn’t just the biggest WAMFest we can – it would be quite easy to make it bigger off this base amount of activity – but the critical mass that is WAMFest draws significant interest from audiences and industry alike. It is this combination of presenting more than 200 live acts, 61 speakers, 21 conference sessions, and more than 150 one-on-one meetings, and, celebrating the significant achievements of the WA music industry as part of our internationally recognised awards that makes WAMFest special. Highlights this year include the legendary and iconic DJ to the UK punk scene Don Letts delivering a keynote address at WAMCon (keep an eye out for a DJ set as well), the immediately popular Lot Party which along with 28 other venues will showcase some of the best WA talent, the North Perth Party presented with the City of Vincent, and, inducting the Stems and Dixie Battersby into the WA Music Hall of Fame. I must make mention of the WAM staff, volunteers and contractors who work well and truly over and above the call of duty to deliver this event; all those whom are prepared to support one or more elements of WAMFest, your support is crucial and we love your for it; the WAM Board overseeing and guiding us along the right path; and, everyone who will see a WA artist or band over WAMFest and go on to become supporters of WA music. Please enjoy, participate, scream, shout, buy merch, sing along, learn something, learn something else, applaud success, dance (in the streets or anywhere you like), be inspired, and, take something away from WAMFest that will stay with you forever. M I KE H ARR IS, WAM CEO 1

That’s why this year WAM is incredibly honoured to partner with Healthway to promote the Act-Belong-Commit message as part of WAMFest 2018. The music industry has its fair share of challenges, so promoting a message that encourages people to actively take actions to improve their mental health and that inspires them to live healthier and happier lives is all the more important. The festival itself is perfectly in tune with the Act-Belong-Commit message, providing plenty of opportunities for local artists and music fans to get together and enjoy music in a purposeful way. Actively engaging in music, whether that’s by learning an instrument, playing in a band, or just heading to a show, are all fantastic ways to Act - do something, Belong - do something with someone, and Commit - do something meaningful. Throughout the festival we’re encouraging everyone to be mindful of how attending or taking part in live music showcases, connecting with the community, building friendships, and setting goals for the future all contribute to changes in mood and emotional wellbeing. We all know working in the music industry isn’t always the easy. That’s why it’s so important that we actively take steps to stay physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy. Act-Belong-Commit provides us with the simple tools we need to do just this, and in turn improve our ability to handle stress, relate to each other, make good choices, and enjoy life more! 2 01 8 HALL OF FA ME I NDUCTEES We’re also honoured to welcome two new Hall of Fame inductees this year; a huge congratulations to Dixie Battersby and The Stems. DI XI E BAT TE R SBY From humble beginnings working at Thompsons Record store in Perth city in the late 70’s, Dixie Battersby formed friendships with bands who frequented the shop which would be the founding relationships of her impressive career to come. Her early acquaintances with bands, particularly The Triffids saw it take little time at all for Dixie to land a job working at the prestigious EMI in 1983 for which she still contracts. In 2013 Dixie formed DB publicity, her stand alone publicity agency and during her career she has executed publicity campaigns for the likes of Katy Perry, The Beatles, 360, Angus & Julia Stone, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Sam Smith, Alison Wonderland, Something For Kate, Troye Sivan, Beck, The Kooks, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Empire Of The Sun, Paul Kelly, Crowded House, Neil and Tim Finn, Little Birdy, Silverchair, Missy Higgins, Kasey Chambers, The Living End, Sleepy Jackson, John Williamson, Bob Evans, Paul Dempsey, The Avalanches, Olympia, Keith Urban, Banks, Sarah Blasko and many more. TH E STEM S The Stems epitomized 80’s indie rock, giving it a wider currency. They are one of only a handful of bands (among them the Hoodoo Gurus and The Sunnyboys) that cracked the mainstream charts with an indie approach in the 80’s. The band released a series of independent records on Sydney’s Citadel Records with each release reaching #1 on the Australian alternative charts. But it was their debut album, released on Mushroom records, AT FIRST SIGHT VIOLETS ARE BLUE in 1987 that received national and international acclaim becoming one of the best-selling Australian albums of that year despite an almost total lack of commercial airplay in the corporate FM dominated 80’s. Rolling Stone named their album “At First Sight” one of the top 100 releases of all time. Appearances on Countdown, magazine covers, sold out shows were to follow. The band continue to play selective shows to this day to sold out audiences in Australia and abroad. WA MAWA R DS PART Y TH U R SDAY 1 NOVEM B E R | HYAT T REGEN C Y HOT EL PE RT H All winners will be revealed Thursday 1 November at the annual WAMAwards, which this year debuts at the swanky Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel Perth. With the WAMi’s prestigious new home boasting luxe-vibes and first-class facilities, this year’s high-quality affair will be a true reflection of the immense talent recognised throughout the awards. Guests are encouraged to leave the ripped jeans at home and dial up the style for a lively evening celebrating WA music’s very best. Adding to this night-of-nights for the Perth music community, will be live performances by Perth’s iconic rock n roll royalty and Hall of Fame inductees The Stems, much loved duo Gina Williams and Guy House, seven-time WAM Award nominee Carla Geneve, the sassy and energetic stage persona that is Your Girl Pho, the adored hip hop producer and emcee Hyclass, the mesmerising jazz heroes of Gemma Farrell Quintet, and alt-country wild westers Ralway Bell. 16
